    Mechanical aspects in interferometric gravity wave detectors

    In order to measure the tiny effects of gravitational waves, strains in space (i.e. relative changes in distance) of as little as 10-21 or even less have to be detected, at frequencies ranging from 10011z to several kHz. Large laser interferometers are the most promising approach to reach such extreme sensitivities. This lsquostraightforwardrsquo road is, however, obstructed by a multitude of effects that cause (or fake) such fluctuations in distance. Among these are seismic motions, thermal vibrations of optical components, pressure fluctuations of the residual gas in the vacuum tubes, and fundamental effects such as Heisenberg's uncertainty relation. What all of these noise sources have in common is that their effects can be reduced by the choice of sufficiently large arm lengths. This is what dictates the (very expensive) choice of arm lengths of 3 to 4 km in the currently proposed gravitational wave detectors (USA, D-GB, F-I, AUS, JAP)

    Impairment experiences, identity and attitudes towards genetic screening : the views of people with Spinal Muscular Atrophy

    Developments in genetics are rapidly changing the capacity and scope of screening practices. However, people with genetic conditions have been under-represented in the literature exploring their implications. This mixed methods study explores the attitudes of people with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) towards three different population-level genetic screening programmes for SMA: pre-conception, prenatal and newborn. Drawing on qualitative interviews (n= 15) and a survey (n=82), this study demonstrates that more severely affected individuals with early-onset symptoms (Type II SMA), are less likely to support screening and more likely to view SMA positively than those with milder, later onset and/or fluctuating symptoms (Types III/ IV SMA). Indeed, this clinically milder group were more likely to support all forms of screening and view SMA negatively. This paper highlights that screening is a complex issue for people with genetic conditions, and the nature of impairment experiences plays a critical role in shaping attitudes

    Dual-tasking and gait in people with Mild Cognitive Impairment. The effect of working memory

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Cognition and mobility in older adults are closely associated and they decline together with aging. Studies evaluating associations between cognitive factors and gait performance in people with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) are scarce. In this study, our aim was to determine whether specific cognitive factors have a more identifiable effect on gait velocity during dual-tasking in people with MCI.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Fifty-five participants, mean age 77.7 (SD = 5.9), 45% women, with MCI were evaluated for global cognition, working memory, executive function, and attention. Gait Velocity (GV) was measured under a single-task condition (single GV) and under two dual-task conditions: 1) while counting backwards (counting GV), 2) while naming animals (verbal GV). Multivariable linear regression analysis was used to examine associations with an alpha-level of 0.05.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Participants experienced a reduction in GV while engaging in dual-task challenges (p < 0.005). Low executive function and working memory performances were associated with slow single GV (p = 0.038), slow counting GV (p = 0.017), and slow verbal GV (p = 0.031). After adjustments, working memory was the only cognitive factor which remained significantly associated with a slow GV.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In older adults with MCI, low working memory performance was associated with slow GV. Dual-task conditions showed the strongest associations with gait slowing. Our findings suggest that cortical control of gait is associated with decline in working memory in people with MCI.</p

    Desafíos políticos de los países de inmigración

En prácticamente todos los países del mundo, todo lo que concierne a este complejo fenómeno ocupa un lugar destacado en la agenda política. La gestión, el control y la integración de los movimientos internacionales de personas se presentan como un policy field de creciente y prioritaria relevancia. No se trata, sin embargo, de una cuestión de mera moda: el número de países implicados de manera significativa en las migraciones internacionales ha aumentado considerablemente, hasta el punto de que resulta realmente difícil encontrar algún Estado que no sea bien un país de inmigración, bien un país de emigración o bien ambas cosas a la vez, cuando no al menos un país de tránsito. No ha de extrañar entonces que la mayoría de los gobiernos haya tomado conciencia de la necesidad de ofrecer una respuesta en términos legales e institucionales a un fenómeno de carácter permanente que puede llegar a alterar la estructura demográfica, social, cultural, económica y laboral de un país. Dada la complejidad de la cuestión, y por cuestiones de economía argumentativa, aquí se abordará de manera fundamental desde la perspectiva de los países receptores, que, por lo demás, es también la adoptada en forma habitual por los países europeos que registran mayor inmigración. Sin embargo, el fenómeno migratorio es fundamentalmente transnacional y tiene fehacientes repercusiones en los países de emigración.Peer reviewe
