Isochronal synchronization of delay-coupled systems
We consider small network models for mutually delay-coupled systems which
typically do not exhibit stable isochronally synchronized solutions. We show
that for certain coupling architectures which involve delayed self feedback to
the nodes, the oscillators become isochronally synchronized. Applications are
shown for both incoherent pump coupled lasers and spatio-temporal coupled fiber
ring lasers.Comment: 5 pages, accepted for publication in Physical Review
Random field Ising systems on a general hierarchical lattice: Rigorous inequalities
Random Ising systems on a general hierarchical lattice with both, random
fields and random bonds, are considered. Rigorous inequalities between
eigenvalues of the Jacobian renormalization matrix at the pure fixed point are
obtained. These inequalities lead to upper bounds on the crossover exponents

Differential alphav integrin-mediated Ras-ERK signaling during two pathways of angiogenesis.
Antagonists of alphavbeta3 and alphavbeta5 disrupt angiogenesis in response to bFGF and VEGF, respectively. Here, we show that these alphav integrins differentially contribute to sustained Ras-extracellular signal-related kinase (Ras-ERK) signaling in blood vessels, a requirement for endothelial cell survival and angiogenesis. Inhibition of FAK or alphavbeta5 disrupted VEGF-mediated Ras and c-Raf activity on the chick chorioallantoic membrane, whereas blockade of FAK or integrin alphavbeta3 had no effect on bFGF-mediated Ras activity, but did suppress c-Raf activation. Furthermore, retroviral delivery of active Ras or c-Raf promoted ERK activity and angiogenesis, which anti-alphavbeta5 blocked upstream of Ras, whereas anti-alphavbeta3 blocked downstream of Ras, but upstream of c-Raf. The activation of c-Raf by bFGF/alphavbeta3 not only depended on FAK, but also required p21-activated kinase-dependent phosphorylation of serine 338 on c-Raf, whereas VEGF-mediated c-Raf phosphorylation/activation depended on Src, but not Pak. Thus, integrins alphavbeta3 and alphavbeta5 differentially regulate the Ras-ERK pathway, accounting for distinct vascular responses during two pathways of angiogenesis
Predictions of ultra-harmonic oscillations in coupled arrays of limit cycle oscillators
Coupled distinct arrays of nonlinear oscillators have been shown to have a
regime of high frequency, or ultra-harmonic, oscillations that are at multiples
of the natural frequency of individual oscillators. The coupled array
architectures generate an in-phase high-frequency state by coupling with an
array in an anti-phase state. The underlying mechanism for the creation and
stability of the ultra-harmonic oscillations is analyzed. A class of
inter-array coupling is shown to create a stable, in-phase oscillation having
frequency that increases linearly with the number of oscillators, but with an
amplitude that stays fairly constant. The analysis of the theory is illustrated
by numerical simulation of coupled arrays of Stuart-Landau limit cycle
oscillators.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures, accepted to Phys. Rev. E, in pres
Asymptotic Search for Ground States of SU(2) Matrix Theory
We introduce a complete set of gauge-invariant variables and a generalized
Born-Oppenheimer formulation to search for normalizable zero-energy asymptotic
solutions of the Schrodinger equation of SU(2) matrix theory. The asymptotic
method gives only ground state candidates, which must be further tested for
global stability. Our results include a set of such ground state candidates,
including one state which is a singlet under spin(9).Comment: 51 page
End to end distance on contour loops of random gaussian surfaces
A self consistent field theory that describes a part of a contour loop of a
random Gaussian surface as a trajectory interacting with itself is constructed.
The exponent \nu characterizing the end to end distance is obtained by a Flory
argument. The result is compared with different previuos derivations and is
found to agree with that of Kondev and Henley over most of the range of the
roughening exponent of the random surface.Comment: 7 page
In-flight calibration of the Herschel-SPIRE instrument
SPIRE, the Spectral and Photometric Imaging REceiver, is the Herschel Space Observatory's submillimetre camera and spectrometer. It contains a three-band imaging photometer operating at 250, 350 and 500 μm, and an imaging Fourier-transform spectrometer (FTS) covering 194–671 μm (447-1550 GHz). In this paper we describe the initial approach taken to the absolute calibration of the SPIRE instrument using a combination of the emission from the Herschel telescope itself and the modelled continuum emission from solar system objects and other astronomical targets. We present the photometric, spectroscopic and spatial accuracy that is obtainable in data processed through the “standard” pipelines. The overall photometric accuracy at this stage of the mission is estimated as 15% for the photometer and between 15 and 50% for the spectrometer. However, there remain issues with the photometric accuracy of the spectra of low flux sources in the longest wavelength part of the SPIRE spectrometer band. The spectrometer wavelength accuracy is determined to be better than 1/10th of the line FWHM. The astrometric accuracy in SPIRE maps is found to be 2 arcsec when the latest calibration data are used. The photometric calibration of the SPIRE instrument is currently determined by a combination of uncertainties in the model spectra of the astronomical standards and the data processing methods employed for map and spectrum calibration. Improvements in processing techniques and a better understanding of the instrument performance will lead to the final calibration accuracy of SPIRE being determined only by uncertainties in the models of astronomical standards
Web ontology representation and reasoning via fragments of set theory
In this paper we use results from Computable Set Theory as a means to
represent and reason about description logics and rule languages for the
semantic web.
Specifically, we introduce the description logic \mathcal{DL}\langle
4LQS^R\rangle(\D)--admitting features such as min/max cardinality constructs
on the left-hand/right-hand side of inclusion axioms, role chain axioms, and
datatypes--which turns out to be quite expressive if compared with
\mathcal{SROIQ}(\D), the description logic underpinning the Web Ontology
Language OWL. Then we show that the consistency problem for
\mathcal{DL}\langle 4LQS^R\rangle(\D)-knowledge bases is decidable by
reducing it, through a suitable translation process, to the satisfiability
problem of the stratified fragment of set theory, involving variables
of four sorts and a restricted form of quantification. We prove also that,
under suitable not very restrictive constraints, the consistency problem for
\mathcal{DL}\langle 4LQS^R\rangle(\D)-knowledge bases is
\textbf{NP}-complete. Finally, we provide a -translation of rules
belonging to the Semantic Web Rule Language (SWRL)
