    Gastrointestinal Strongyles in Wild Ruminants

    Parasitologists have long studied helminth infections in wildlife species and have documented the existence of many organisms from a diversity of mammalian hosts. With this accumulation of information has come improved understanding of the significance of these organisms and the diseases they produce in their mammalian hosts. Some of the most notable examples include the metastrongyloid lungworms, Trichinella spiralis, and Elaeophora schneideri, which are covered separately in this volume. It is, however, for the group of parasites referred to as gastrointestinal nematodes that we have accumulated the most data. Only recently has progress been made in determining the significance of these strongylate nematodes with respect to their potential impact on the morbidity and mortality of the ruminants that they infect. The accumulation of information on diseases of wild animals into a single combined volume has been slow, but progress has coincided with the proliferation of data for host and parasite interactions. Numerous references including Alaskan Wildlife Diseases (Dieterich 1981), Manual of Common Wildlife Diseases in Colorado (Adrian 1981), Field Manual of Wildlife Diseases in the Southeastern United States (Davidson and Nettles 1988), Zoo and Wildlife Medicine (Fowler 1993), and the previous editions of Parasitic Diseases of Wild Mammals (Davis and Anderson 1971) have all made significant contributions to our knowledge. Beyond North America, Dunn (1969) and Govorka et al. (1988) provided excellent compilations on the helminths in wild ruminants. In the 1971 printing of Parasitic Diseases of Mammals, however, there was no general coverage of gastrointestinal nematodes, and only T. spiralis was addressed.     The spatial distribution of human exposure to PCBs around a former production site in Slovakia

    We evaluated concentrations of 15 PCB congeners in blood serum of 2,047 adults, 431 8-9-years old children and 1,134 mother-child pairs born in 2001-2003. These subjects were long-standing residents living up to 70 km (to the north) and up to 50 km (to the south) of the former Chemko Strážske PCB production facility in the Michalovce district of Slovakia. We plotted serum concentration against distance from the plant both with and without consideration of the direction of their homes from the site. The decrease in exposure with distance could be described by an exponential function which was dependent on direction and climatic parameters. By kriging we created maps depicting predicted isoconcentration contours for sex- and age-adjusted serum concentration of ΣPCBs for the same group of children, adults and mothers. The principle of our risk analysis was to relate serum concentration data, reflecting PCB body burden, using the critical concentrations established by the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES 2010) as thresholds below which the probability of effects on health is regarded as negligible. We conclude that 10 years ago around 200,000 residents were at risk in this densely populated area. Exposure has since decreased but the mechanism for this has not yet been studied

    Recent progress in L-H transition studies at JET: Tritium, Helium, Hydrogen and Deuterium

    We present an overview of results from a series of L-II transition experiments undertaken at JET since the installation of the ITER-like-wall (JET-ILW), with beryllium wall tiles and a tungsten divertor. Tritium, helium and deuterium plasmas have been investigated. Initial results in tritium show ohmic L-H transitions at low density and the power threshold for the L-H transition (P-LH) is lower in tritium plasmas than in deuterium ones at low densities, while we still lack contrasted data to provide a scaling at high densities. In helium plasmas there is a notable shift of the density at which the power threshold is minimum ((n) over bar (e,min)) to higher values relative to deuterium and hydrogen references. Above (n) over bar (e,min) (He) the L-H power threshold at high densities is similar for D and He plasmas. Transport modelling in slab geometry shows that in helium neoclassical transport competes with interchange-driven transport, unlike in hydrogen isotopes. Measurements of the radial electric field in deuterium plasmas show that E-r shear is not a good indicator of proximity to the L-H transition. Transport analysis of ion heat flux in deuterium plasmas show a non-linearity as density is decreased below (n) over bar (e,min).
