ATP binding to a multisubunit enzyme: statistical thermodynamics analysis
Due to inter-subunit communication, multisubunit enzymes usually hydrolyze
ATP in a concerted fashion. However, so far the principle of this process
remains poorly understood. In this study, from the viewpoint of statistical
thermodynamics, a simple model is presented. In this model, we assume that the
binding of ATP will change the potential of the corresponding enzyme subunit,
and the degree of this change depends on the state of its adjacent subunits.
The probability of enzyme in a given state satisfies the Boltzmann's
distribution. Although it looks much simple, this model can fit the recent
experimental data of chaperonin TRiC/CCT well. From this model, the dominant
state of TRiC/CCT can be obtained. This study provided a new way to understand
biophysical processes by statistical thermodynamics analysis
Sport sponsorship alliances: relationship management for shared value

Purpose – Using a case study of an international sport event, the purpose of this paper is to examine the inter-organisational relationship between a sport event property and its corporate sponsors. Design/methodology/approach – Interviews were conducted with personnel from the national sport organisation responsible for the delivery of this major event, and from four of its corporate sponsorship partners. Findings – The findings indicated that both formal and informal governance were critical to the relationships underpinning these sponsorship alliances. From a dyadic perspective, it was found that the satisfaction of sponsorship partners had two key elements: tangible commercial benefits from the sponsor-sponsee alliance, and the less tangible but nonetheless valuable relationship support within the partnership. In short, partner satisfaction and alliance stability stemmed from relational constructs and the balance of formal governance mechanisms. Originality/value – This paper explores the variables that generate value and maintain alliance stability for improved sponsorship governance. These findings, while focused on a single case study, have implications for research in the field of sponsorship and to the area of business-to-business relationships more broadly
Paradoxical popups: Why are they hard to catch?
Even professional baseball players occasionally find it difficult to
gracefully approach seemingly routine pop-ups. This paper describes a set of
towering pop-ups with trajectories that exhibit cusps and loops near the apex.
For a normal fly ball, the horizontal velocity is continuously decreasing due
to drag caused by air resistance. But for pop-ups, the Magnus force (the force
due to the ball spinning in a moving airflow) is larger than the drag force. In
these cases the horizontal velocity decreases in the beginning, like a normal
fly ball, but after the apex, the Magnus force accelerates the horizontal
motion. We refer to this class of pop-ups as paradoxical because they appear to
misinform the typically robust optical control strategies used by fielders and
lead to systematic vacillation in running paths, especially when a trajectory
terminates near the fielder. In short, some of the dancing around when
infielders pursue pop-ups can be well explained as a combination of bizarre
trajectories and misguidance by the normally reliable optical control strategy,
rather than apparent fielder error. Former major league infielders confirm that

Above and belowground community strategies respond to different global change drivers
Environmental changes alter the diversity and structure of communities. By shifting the range of species traits that will be successful under new conditions, environmental drivers can also dramatically impact ecosystem functioning and resilience. Above and belowground communities jointly regulate whole-ecosystem processes and responses to change, yet they are frequently studied separately. To determine whether these communities respond similarly to environmental changes, we measured taxonomic and trait-based responses of plant and soil microbial communities to four years of experimental warming and nitrogen deposition in a temperate grassland. Plant diversity responded strongly to N addition, whereas soil microbial communities responded primarily to warming, likely via an associated decrease in soil moisture. These above and belowground changes were associated with selection for more resource-conservative plant and microbe growth strategies, which reduced community functional diversity. Functional characteristics of plant and soil microbial communities were weakly correlated (P = 0.07) under control conditions, but not when above or belowground communities were altered by either global change driver. These results highlight the potential for global change drivers operating simultaneously to have asynchronous impacts on above and belowground components of ecosystems. Assessment of a single ecosystem component may therefore greatly underestimate the whole-system impact of global environmental changes
Preclinical correction of human Fanconi anemia complementation group A bone marrow cells using a safety-modified lentiviral vector.
One of the major hurdles for the development of gene therapy for Fanconi anemia (FA) is the increased sensitivity of FA stem cells to free radical-induced DNA damage during ex vivo culture and manipulation. To minimize this damage, we have developed a brief transduction procedure for lentivirus vector-mediated transduction of hematopoietic progenitor cells from patients with Fanconi anemia complementation group A (FANCA). The lentiviral vector FancA-sW contains the phosphoglycerate kinase promoter, the FANCA cDNA, and a synthetic, safety-modified woodchuck post transcriptional regulatory element (sW). Bone marrow mononuclear cells or purified CD34(+) cells from patients with FANCA were transduced in an overnight culture on recombinant fibronectin peptide CH-296, in low (5%) oxygen, with the reducing agent, N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), and a combination of growth factors, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), Flt3 ligand, stem cell factor, and thrombopoietin. Transduced cells plated in methylcellulose in hypoxia with NAC showed increased colony formation compared with 21% oxygen without NAC (P<0.03), showed increased resistance to mitomycin C compared with green fluorescent protein (GFP) vector-transduced controls (P<0.007), and increased survival. Thus, combining short transduction and reducing oxidative stress may enhance the viability and engraftment of gene-corrected cells in patients with FANCA
Fano effect in a ring-dot system with tunable coupling
Transport measurements are presented on a quantum ring that is tunnel-coupled
to a quantum dot. When the dot is in the Coulomb blockade regime, but strongly
coupled to the open ring, Fano line shapes are observed in the current through
the ring, when the electron number in the dot changes by one. The symmetry of
the Fano resonances is found to depend on the magnetic flux penetrating the
area of the ring and on the strength of the ring-dot coupling. At temperatures
above T=0.65 K the Fano effect disappears while the Aharonov-Bohm interference
in the ring persists up to T=4.2 K. Good agreement is found between these
experimental observations and a single channel scattering matrix model
including decoherence in the dot.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure
Physical State of Molecular Gas in High Galactic Latitude Translucent Clouds
The rotational transitions of carbon monoxide (CO) are the primary means of
investigating the density and velocity structure of the molecular interstellar
medium. Here we study the lowest four rotational transitions of CO towards
high-latitude translucent molecular clouds (HLCs). We report new observations
of the J = (4-3), (2-1), and (1-0) transitions of CO towards eight
high-latitude clouds. The new observations are combined with data from the
literature to show that the emission from all observed CO transitions is
linearly correlated. This implies that the excitation conditions which lead to
emission in these transitions are uniform throughout the clouds. Observed
13CO/12CO (1-0) integrated intensity ratios are generally much greater than the
expected abundance ratio of the two species, indicating that the regions which
emit 12CO (1-0) radiation are optically thick. We develop a statistical method
to compare the observed line ratios with models of CO excitation and radiative
transfer. This enables us to determine the most likely portion of the physical
parameter space which is compatible with the observations. The model enables us
to rule out CO gas temperatures greater than 30K since the most likely
high-temperature configurations are 1 pc-sized structures aligned along the
line of sight. The most probable solution is a high density and low temperature
(HDLT) solution. The CO cell size is approximately 0.01 pc (2000 AU). These
cells are thus tiny fragments within the 100 times larger CO-emitting extent of
a typical high-latitude cloud. We discuss the physical implications of HDLT

Design of small-scale tilt-rotor unmanned aerial vehicle
Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is the aircraft without a human pilot aboard. UAVs
are subcategorized as RC Models, which are controlled by a pilot via transmitter-receiver system, and
Drones, which are fully autonomous. They are used for different military missions, such as surveillance
and reconnaissance. They are widening their use in civil areas, for example, search and rescue operations,
filmmaking, remote sensing of chemical leaks, crop spraying and monitoring in agriculture, etc. Most
of the UAVs are either of airplane (fixed-wing) type or copter (Vertical Take Off and Landing) type. The
aim of this project is to design the UAV that will combine the hovering abilities of multicopters with the
endurance of fixed-wing aircrafts
