Multicritical behavior of the ferromagnetic Blume-Emery-Griffiths model with repulsive biquadratic couplings
CNPQ - CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICOCAPES - COORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DE PESSOAL E NÍVEL SUPERIORThe ferromagnetic (J gt; 0) version of the Blume-Emery-Griffiths model in the region of repulsive biquadratic couplings (K < 0) is considered on a Cayley tree of coordination z, reducing the statistical problem to the analysis of a two-dimensional nonlinear discrete map. In order to investigate the effect of the coordination z on the system multicritical behavior, we study the particular case K/J = -3.5 with the inclusion of crystal fields (D not equal 0), but vanishing external magnetic fields (H = 0), for two distinct lattice coordinations (z = 4 and z = 6). The thermodynamic solutions on the Bethe lattice (the central region of a large Cayley tree) are associated with the attractors of the two-dimensional map. The phase diagrams display several thermodynamic phases (paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, ferrimagnetic, and staggered quadrupolar). In some cases, there are regions of numerical co stability of two different attractors of the map, associated with discontinuous phase transitions between the corresponding phases. To verify the thermodynamic stability of the phases and to locate the first-order boundaries, the analytical expression of the Gibbs free energy was obtained by the method proposed by Gujrati [Rev. Lett. 74, 809 (1995)]. For lower coordinations (z = 4) the transition between the ferrimagnetic and the staggered quadrupolar phases is always continuous, while the transition between the ferromagnetic and the ferrimagnetic phases is discontinuous at low temperatures, turning into continuous for temperatures above a tricritical point. On the other hand, for higher coordinations (z = 6), the transition between the ferromagnetic and the ferrimagnetic phases is always continuous. However, the transition between the ferrimagnetic and the staggered quadrupolar phases is continuous for higher temperatures and discontinuous for temperatures below a tricritical point, in agreement with previous results obtained in the mean-field approximation (infinity-coordination limit). Absolute Calibration of the Auger Fluorescence Detectors
Absolute calibration of the Pierre Auger Observatory fluorescence detectors
uses a light source at the telescope aperture. The technique accounts for the
ombined effects of all detector components in a single measurement. The
calibrated 2.5 m diameter light source fills the aperture, providing uniform
illumination to each pixel. The known flux from the light source and the
response of the acquisition system give the required calibration for each
pixel. In the lab, light source uniformity is studied using CCD images and the
intensity is measured relative to NIST-calibrated photodiodes. Overall

First-principles dynamical CPA to finite-temperature magnetism of transition metals
We present here the first-principles dynamical CPA (coherent potential
approximation) combined with the tight-binding LMTO LDA+U method towards
quantitative calculations of the electronic structure and magnetism at finite
temperatures in transition metals and compounds. The theory takes into account
the single-site dynamical charge and spin fluctuations using the functional
integral technique as well as an effective medium. Numerical results for Fe,
Co, and Ni show that the theory explains quantitatively the high-temperature
properties such as the effective Bohr magneton numbers and the excitation
spectra in the paramagnetic state, and describes the Curie temperatures

The effect of medium composition on interleukin-2 production by murine EL-4 thymoma cells
Due to the role of interleukin-2 (IL-2) in the mediation of immune response, this cytokine has been used in the treatment of some types of cancer and infectious diseases. However, relatively high levels of this cytokine are required to achieve significant activity. The aim of this work was to study a culture medium composition designed to increase the production of IL-2 by suspended murine EL-4 cells. The cultivations were carried out aiming at producing IL-2 in stirred bioreactors. The effects of concentration of glutamine, phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA), concanavalin A (Con A), Pluronic F68, and fetal calf serum (FCS) on cell viability and IL-2 production were evaluated. PMA alone was more efficient in IL-2 production than it was in association with Con A. The maximum IL-2 production was around 162 ng/mL with 856 ng/mL PMA and 1.45% (v/v) FCS.16517
Effects of cigarette smoking on the respiratory epithelium and its role in the pathogenesis of chronic rhinosinusitis
O crescente consumo de cigarro tem despertado preocupações com o desenvolvimento e agravamento de doenças, em especial às relacionadas ao trato respiratório. OBJETIVO: Neste artigo revisamos as evidências que apontam os efeitos da fumaça de cigarro sobre o epitélio respiratório bem como o seu papel na fisiopatogenia na rinossinusite crônica. CONCLUSÃO: Embora existam dados que fortaleçam um vínculo entre o hábito de fumar e a RSC, em seu conjunto, os estudos demonstram que deve haver grande dependência da susceptibilidade individual na resposta à fumaça de cigarro para o desenvolvimento ou manutenção da RSC. Uma adequada orientação a esses pacientes para interrupção do consumo de cigarro, assim como o reforço de campanhas de combate ao tabagismo, são de extrema importância para o controle dessa doença de grande impacto sócio-econômico.The increasing consumption of cigarettes has aroused concerns about the development and worsening of diseases, particularly those related to the respiratory tract. AIM: In this paper we review the evidence suggesting the effects of cigarette smoking on the respiratory epithelium and its role in the pathogenesis in chronic rhinosinusitis. CONCLUSIONS: Although there is evidence supporting a link between smoking and CRS, studies suggest that there might be individual susceptibility to cigarette smoking causing the development and/or maintenance of CRS. Proper patient educations to quit smoking as well as reinforcement of antismoking campaigns are extremely important to control this disease of major socio-economic impact
BioTile, A Perl based tool for the identification of differentially enriched regions in tiling microarray data
BACKGROUND: Genome-wide tiling array experiments are increasingly used for the analysis of DNA methylation. Because DNA methylation patterns are tissue and cell type specific, the detection of differentially methylated regions (DMRs) with small effect size is a necessary feature of tiling microarray ‘peak’ finding algorithms, as cellular heterogeneity within a studied tissue may lead to a dilution of the phenotypically relevant effects. Additionally, the ability to detect short length DMRs is necessary as biologically relevant signal may occur in focused regions throughout the genome. RESULTS: We present a free open-source Perl application, Binding Intensity Only Tile array analysis or “BioTile”, for the identification of differentially enriched regions (DERs) in tiling array data. The application of BioTile to non-smoothed data allows for the identification of shorter length and smaller effect-size DERs, while correcting for probe specific variation by inversely weighting on probe variance through a permutation corrected meta-analysis procedure employed at identified regions. BioTile exhibits higher power to identify significant DERs of low effect size and across shorter genomic stretches as compared to other peak finding algorithms, while not sacrificing power to detect longer DERs. CONCLUSION: BioTile represents an easy to use analysis option applicable to multiple microarray platforms, allowing for its integration into the analysis workflow of array data analysis
Dynamical coherent-potential approximation approach to excitation spectra in 3d transition metals
First-principles dynamical CPA (Coherent-Potential Approximation) for
electron correlations has been developed further by taking into account
higher-order dynamical corrections with use of the asymptotic approximation.
The theory is applied to the investigations of a systematic change of
excitation spectra in transition metals from Sc to Cu at finite
temperatures. It is shown that the dynamical effects damp main peaks in the
densities of states (DOS) obtained by the local density approximation to the
density functional theory, reduce the band broadening due to thermal spin
fluctuations, create the Mott-Hubbard type bands in the case of fcc Mn and fcc
Fe, and create a small hump corresponding to the `6 eV' satellite in the case
of Co, Ni, and Cu. Calculated DOS explain the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy
data as well as the bremsstrahlung isochromat spectroscopy data. Moreover, it
is found that screening effects on the exchange energy parameters are
significant for understanding the spectra in magnetic transition metals.Comment: To be published in Phys. Rev.
Role Of Tamm-horsfall Protein In The Binding And In Vivo Phagocytosis Of Type 1 Fimbriated Escherichia Coli By Mouse Peritoneal Macrophages.
Tamm-Horsfall glycoprotein (THP) contains manno-oligosaccharides that are recognized by type 1 fimbriae (F1) of Escherichia coli. In the present study, we examined the in vivo phagocytic activity of mouse peritoneal macrophages after treatment of bacteria with THP. At low THP concentrations (12.5 microg/ml and 50 microg/ml) no significant difference was observed in the phagocytosis of E. coli F1+. However, at high THP concentrations (500 microg/ml and 1250 microg/ml) we obtained a reduction of bacterial phagocytosis by mouse peritoneal macrophages.34913-
