    Contact pressure distribution in guide bearings for pneumatic actuators

    This paper deals with the analysis of the contact pressure distribution at the rod/guide bearing interface of a linear pneumatic actuator. The investigation was carried out both experimentally, using pressure-sensitive film, and numerically by means of finite element analysis. By using the numerical model, it was possible to identify design changes to the cylinder front head whereby contact pressure at the bearing/rod interface can be redistributed. Operating conditions that are more advantageous in terms of wear and durability can thus be achieved

    Parametrical optimization of laser surface alloyed NiTi shape memory alloy with Co and Nb by the Taguchi method

    Different high-purity metal powders were successfully alloyed on to a nickel titanium (NiTi) shape memory alloy (SMA) with a 3 kW carbon dioxide (CO2) laser system. In order to produce an alloyed layer with complete penetration and acceptable composition profile, the Taguchi approach was used as a statistical technique for optimizing selected laser processing parameters. A systematic study of laser power, scanning velocity, and pre-paste powder thickness was conducted. The signal-to-noise ratios (S/N) for each control factor were calculated in order to assess the deviation from the average response. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was carried out to understand the significance of process variables affecting the process effects. The Taguchi method was able to determine the laser process parameters for the laser surface alloying technique with high statistical accuracy and yield a laser surface alloying technique capable of achieving a desirable dilution ratio. Energy dispersive spectrometry consistently showed that the per cent by weight of Ni was reduced by 45 per cent as compared with untreated NiTi SMA when the Taguchi-determined laser processing parameters were employed, thus verifying the laser's processing parameters as optimum

    Lack of kainic acid-induced gamma oscillations predicts subsequent CA1 excitotoxic cell death

    Gamma oscillations are a prominent feature of hippocampal network activity, but their functional role remains debated, ranging from mere epiphenomena to being crucial for information processing. Similarly, persistent gamma oscillations sometimes appear prior to epileptic discharges in patients with mesial temporal sclerosis. However, the significance of this activity in hippocampal excitotoxicity is unclear. We assessed the relationship between kainic acid (KA)-induced gamma oscillations and excitotoxicity in genetically engineered mice in which N-methyl-d-aspartic acid receptor deletion was confined to CA3 pyramidal cells. Mutants showed reduced CA3 pyramidal cell firing and augmented sharp wave–ripple activity, resulting in higher susceptibility to KA-induced seizures, and leading to strikingly selective neurodegeneration in the CA1 subfield. Interestingly, the increase in KA-induced γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, and the persistent 30–50-Hz gamma oscillations, both of which were observed in control mice prior to the first seizure discharge, were abolished in the mutants. Consequently, on subsequent days, mutants manifested prolonged epileptiform activity and massive neurodegeneration of CA1 cells, including local GABAergic neurons. Remarkably, pretreatment with the potassium channel blocker α-dendrotoxin increased GABA levels, restored gamma oscillations, and prevented CA1 degeneration in the mutants. These results demonstrate that the emergence of low-frequency gamma oscillations predicts increased resistance to KA-induced excitotoxicity, raising the possibility that gamma oscillations may have potential prognostic value in the treatment of epilepsy.National Institutes of Health (U.S.).     QCD: Quantum Chromodynamic Diffraction

    The first measurements of the diffractive structure function F2D(3)F_2^{D(3)} at HERA are discussed. A factorisable interpretation in which a partonic structure is assigned to the pomeron is investigated through QCD analyses in which both the quark and gluon densities are permitted to vary freely. A method of measuring the longitudinal structure function of the pomeron without changing the epep centre of mass energy is presented. The possibility that the pomeron structure may receive a large contribution from gluons, relative to quarks, at high β\beta is highlighted, and the experimental signatures which may support such a structure are reviewed.Comment: 8 Latex pages, 4 figures, from talks given by the authors at the Workshop on Proton, Photon and Pomeron Structure, Durham, September 199

    Effect of chondroitin sulfate on intraocular pressure in rats

    PURPOSE: To study the effect of intracameral injections of chondroitin sulfate (CS) on intraocular pressure (IOP), retinal function, and histology in rats. METHODS: Acute or chronic injections of CS were performed unilaterally in the rat anterior chamber, whereas the contralateral eye was injected with vehicle. IOP was daily or weekly assessed by a tonometer. Retinal function was assessed by scotopic electroretinography (ERG) and the visual pathway by flash visual evoked potentials (VEPs), whereas the retinal and optic nerve head structure were examined by histologic analysis. RESULTS: A single injection of 8 mg (but not 2 or 4 mg) CS induced a significant increase of IOP. The increase of IOP induced by a single injection of 8 mg CS lasted for 7 days, whereas chronic (weekly) administration during 10 weeks induced a significant and sustained increase in IOP compared with eyes injected with vehicle. A significant decrease of scotopic ERG a- and b- wave amplitude was observed after 6 and 10 weeks of CS administration. Moreover, a significant decrease in scotopic flash VEP N2-P2 component amplitude was observed in eyes treated with CS for 6 and 10 weeks. A significant loss of ganglion cell layer cells and optic nerve axons was observed in eyes receiving CS for 10 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that exogenous CS simulates the accumulation of CS in primary open-angle glaucoma and that increased amounts of CS could play a key role in the IOP dysregulation characteristic of glaucoma.Fil: Belforte, Nicolás Adalberto.     Constraints on anomalous Higgs boson couplings using production and decay information in the four-lepton final state

    A search is performed for anomalous interactions of the recently discovered Higgs boson using matrix element techniques with the information from its decay to four leptons and from associated Higgs boson production with two quark jets in either vector boson fusion or associated production with a vector boson. The data were recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of and correspond to an integrated luminosity of . They are combined with the data collected at center-of-mass energies of 7 and , corresponding to integrated luminosities of 5.1 and , respectively. All observations are consistent with the expectations for the standard model Higgs boson

    Search for dijet resonances in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV and constraints on dark matter and other models

    A search is presented for narrow resonances decaying to dijet final states in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 12.9 fb(-1). The dijet mass spectrum is well described by a smooth parameterization and no significant evidence for the production of new particles is observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are reported on the production cross section for narrow resonances with masses above 0.6TeV. In the context of specific models, the limits exclude string resonances with masses below 7.4TeV, scalar diquarks below 6.9TeV, axigluons and colorons below 5.5TeV, excited quarks below 5.4TeV, color-octet scalars below 3.OTeV, W' bosons below 2.7 TeV, Z' bosons below 2.1 TeV and between 2.3 and 2.6 TeV, and RS gravitons below 1.9 TeV. These extend previous limits in the dijet channel. Vector and axial-vector mediators in a simplified model of interactions between quarks and dark matter are excluded below 2.0 TeV. The first limits in the dijet channel on dark matter mediators are presented as functions of dark matter mass and are compared to the exclusions of dark matter in direct detection experiments.
