The effect of polycaprolactone nanofibers on the dynamic and impact behavior of glass fibre reinforced polymer composites
In this article, the effect of polycaprolactone nanofibers on the dynamic behavior of glass fiber reinforced polymer composites is investigated. The vibratory behavior of composite beams in their pristine state (without any nano modification) and the same beams modified with polycaprolactone fibers is considered experimentally. The experimental results show that the incorporation of polycaprolactone nanofibers increases the damping; however, it does not significantly affect the natural frequencies. Additionally, the paper analyses the effect of polycaprolactone nanofibers on the impact behavior of glass fiber/epoxy composites. This has already been analyzed experimentally in a previous study. In this work, we developed a finite element model to simulate the impact behavior of such composite laminates. Our results confirm the conclusions done experimentally and prove that composites reinforced with polycaprolactone nanofibers are more resistant to damage and experience less damage when subjected to the same impact as the pristine composites. This study contributes to the knowledge about the dynamic behavior and the impact resistance of glass fiber reinforced polymer composites reinforced with polycaprolactone nanofibers. The findings of this study show that interleaving with polycaprolactone nanofibers can be used to control the vibrations and improve the impact damage resistance of structures made of composite mats as aircrafts or wind turbines
A Gaussian Integral Filter with Multivariate Laplace Process Noise
This paper introduces the concept of the Gaussian integral filter (GIF), the
limit of the Gaussian sum filter (GSF) for when the number of mixands tends to
infinity. The GIF is obtained via a combination of GSF, quadrature, and
interpolation. While it is a very general concept, in this paper the GIF is
used to represent multiviariate Laplace (ML) distributions defining the process
noise when tracking a maneuvering target. The filter is first applied to a
linear three-dimensional toy problem, and then to a maneuvering target tracking
problem in Earth orbit. For the more complex maneuvering target tracking
problem, the filter requires only 1.4 times the computational resources of an
unscented Kalman filter (UKF), while having errors up to 11 times smaller. For
the same problem, the UKF slowly diverges.Comment: IEEE International Conference on Information Fusion, Charleston, SC,

An incidental diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia with magnetic resonance imaging
The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by the human severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus. The most common clinical findings related to COVID-19 are fever and cough, with the proportion of patients developing interstitial pneumonia. Other symptoms include dyspnea, expectoration, headache, anosmia, ageusia, myalgia and malaise. To date, the diagnostic criteria for COVID-19 include nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swabs. Computed tomography (CT) scans of the thorax showing signs of interstitial pneumonia are important in the management of respiratory disease and in the evaluation of lung involvement. hi the literature, there are few cases of COVID-19 pneumonia diagnosis made using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In our report, we describe a case of accidental detection of findings related to interstitial pneumonia in a patient who underwent abdominal MRI for other clinical reasons. A 71-year-old woman was referred to our department for an MRI scan of the abdomen as her oncological follow-up. She was asymptomatic at the time of the examination and had passed the triage carried out on all the patients prior to diagnostic tests during the COVID-19 pandemic. The images acquired in the upper abdomen showed the presence of areas of altered signal intensity involving asymmetrically both pulmonary lower lobes, with a patchy appearance and a preferential peripheral subpleural distribution. We considered these features as highly suspicious for COVID-19 pneumonia. The nasopharyngeal swab later confirmed the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection. There are limited reports about MRI features of COVID-19 pneumonia, considering that high-resolution chest CT is the imaging technique of choice to diagnose pneumonia. Nevertheless, this clinical case confirmed that it is possible to detect MRI signs suggestive of COVID-19 pneumonia. The imaging features described could help in the evaluation of the lung parenchyma to assess the presence of signs suggestive of COVID-19 pneumonia, especially in asymptomatic patients during the pandemic phase of the disease
Pattern recognition of acoustic emission signal during the mode I fracture mechanisms in carbon- epoxy composite
The aim of the paper is to use Acoustic Emission technique to distinguish the micro/macro failure mechanisms of carbon-epoxy composite laminates during Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) tests. In order to recognize and detect different damage mechanisms, Self-Organizing Map (SOM) method has been used to cluster the AE signals according with the fracture mode that originated them. In addition, most significate Learning vector quantization (LVQ) program has been applied to verify the signals. Five AE features were selected as main parameters: Rise-time, Counts, Energy, Duration and Amplitude. The results highlighted that different signals can be recognized and classified related to their origin. The failure mechanisms detected are Matrix cracking, delamination, and fiber breakage. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images validate the results. Mathematics data and experimental results confirmed a good converging of AE dat
Cohesive zone modelling of delamination response of a composite laminate with interleaved nylon 6,6 nanofibres
This work simulates numerically Double Cantilever Beam and End Notched Flexure experiments on Carbon Fibre Epoxy Resin specimens that have been performed by some of the authors in a previous work. Specimens have been nanomodified by interleaving plies with a layer of electrospun nanofibres in the delaminated interface. Eight different configurations of nanofibres have been used as interleave, for a total of 9 configurations (8 nanomodified plus the virgin one) to be simulated for both kind of tests to identify the cohesive zone parameters corresponding to the effect of nanofibre diameter, nanolayer thickness and nanofibre orientation on the delamination behaviour of the composite. Results showed that a bilinear damage law is necessary for almost all nanomodified configurations, and presented a clear relationship between nanomat layer parameters and the cohesive energy of the interface
Toward CP-even Neutrino Beam
The best method of measuring CP violating effect in neutrino oscillation
experiments is to construct and use a neutrino beam made of an ideal mixture of
and of monochromatic lines. The conceptual design of such
a beam is described, together with how to measure the CP-odd quantity. We
propose to exploit an accelerated unstable hydrogen-like heavy ion in a storage
ring, whose decay has both electron capture and bound beta decay with a
comparable fraction.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, Published versio
