    The happiness of European Muslims post-9/11

    We examine the happiness trajectory of Muslims living in European countries following the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001, using six rounds of the European Social Survey (ESS). We find a decline, and then a subsequent return to average happiness among the general Muslim migrant population relative to others after 9/11. However, a small subgroup of Muslims, young male Muslim immigrants from Middle East, report a persistent low level of subjective well-being. This may be seen as a potential source of a threat on integration of Muslims and hence social cohesion and peace in European countries. Our findings persist after controlling for perceived discrimination, migrant status, and demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, as well as fixed effects for year and country of residence

    A Compact Electromagnetic Vibration Harvesting System with High Performance Interface Electronics

    A compact vibration-based electromagnetic (EM) energy harvesting system utilizing high performance interface electronics, has been presented. The energy harvester module consists of an AA-battery sized cylinder tube with an external coil winding, a fixed magnet at the bottom of the tube, and a free magnet inside. The transducer is able to operate at low external vibration frequencies between 9.5 and 12 Hz. The generated AC voltage is converted to DC using a custom rectifier circuit that utilizes a gate cross coupled (GCC) input stage. This decreases the effective threshold voltage of the utilized diodes, while increasing the DC output power delivered to the load. The autonomous system, composed of an EM energy harvester module and a 0.35 mu m CMOS IC, delivers 11.6 mu W power to a 41 mu A load at an external vibration frequency of 12 Hz. The volume of the total system is 4.5 cm(3), and the overall system power density is 2.6 mu W/cm(3)

    We report a novel metal-organic framework (MOF) based on a cobalt arylphosphonate, namely, [Co2(H4-MTPPA)]·3NMP·H2O (1·3NMP·H2O), which was prepared solvothermically from the tetrahedral linker tetraphenylmethane tetrakis-4-phosphonic acid (H8-MTPPA) and CoSO4·7H2O in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP). Compound 1 has the highest porosity (BET surface area of 1034 m2 g−1) ever reported for a MOF based on an aryl phosphonic acid linker. The indigo blue crystals of 1·3NMP·H2O are composed of edge-shared eight-membered Co2P2O4 rings, and are thermally very stable up to 500 °C.TU Berlin, Open-Access-Mittel - 201

    Electrically Conductive Photoluminescent Porphyrin Phosphonate Metal-Organic Frameworks

    Herein, the design and synthesis of a highly photoluminescent and electrically conductive metal–organic framework [Zn{Cu-p-H6TPPA}]⋅2 [(CH3)2NH] (designated as GTUB3), which is constructed using the 5,10,15,20-tetrakis [p-phenylphosphonic acid] porphyrin (p-H8TPPA) organic linker, is reported. The bandgap of GTUB3 is measured to be 1.45 and 1.48 eV using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, respectively. The PL decay measurement yields a charge carrier lifetime of 40.6 ns. Impedance and DC measurements yield average electrical conductivities of 0.03 and 4 S m−1, respectively, making GTUB3 a rare example of an electrically conductive 3D metal–organic framework. Thermogravimetric analysis reveals that the organic components of GTUB3 are stable up to 400 °C. Finally, its specific surface area and pore volume are calculated to be 622 m2 g−1 and 0.43 cm3 g−1, respectively, using grand canonical Monte Carlo. Owing to its porosity and high electrical conductivity, GTUB3 may be used as a low-cost electrode material in next generation of supercapacitors, while its low bandgap and high photoluminescence make it a promising material for optoelectronic applications

The rational design of the conjugate integrates isomeric purity of the phthalocyanine core substitution, suitable biocompatibility with the use of polyoxo water-solubilizing substituents, and a convergent synthetic strategy ended by the use of click chemistry to graft the Gd-DOTA moiety to the phthalocyanine. Photophysical and photochemical properties, contrast imaging experiments and preliminary in vitro investigations proved that such a combination is relevant and lead to a new type of potential theranostic agent

    Coordination-Induced Band Gap Reduction in a Metal-Organic Framework

    Herein, we report on the synthesis of a microporous, three-dimensional phosphonate metal-organic framework (MOF) with the composition Cu3 (H5 -MTPPA)2  ⋅ 2 NMP (H8 -MTPPA=methane tetra-p-phenylphosphonic acid and NMP=N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone). This MOF, termed TUB1, has a unique one-dimensional inorganic building unit composed of square planar and distorted trigonal bipyramidal copper atoms. It possesses a (calculated) BET surface area of 766.2 m2 /g after removal of the solvents from the voids. The Tauc plot for TUB1 yields indirect and direct band gaps of 2.4 eV and 2.7 eV, respectively. DFT calculations reveal the existence of two spin-dependent gaps of 2.60 eV and 0.48 eV for the alpha and beta spins, respectively, with the lowest unoccupied crystal orbital for both gaps predominantly residing on the square planar copper atoms. The projected density of states suggests that the presence of the square planar copper atoms reduces the overall band gap of TUB1, as the beta-gap for the trigonal bipyramidal copper atoms is 3.72 eV

    The Integration Monitor 2005. The social integration of migrants monitored over time: trend and cohort analyses

    In 2004, work started on the development of an Integration Monitor. The Integration Monitor is a project that is being implemented by the Research and Documentation Centre (Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek- en Documentatiecentrum - WODC) of the Ministry of Justice in collaboration with Statistics Netherlands (Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek - CBS). The object is to develop a tool that can be used to monitor the integration of first and second-generation individuals from ethnic minorities over time. Alongside information from other sources, a monitoring tool of this nature can contribute to a better understanding of the extent to which, and the rate at which, the various ethnic minority groups are able to gain a place for themselves in Dutch society. In comparison with the first Integration Monitor published in 2004, the Integration Monitor 2005 features not only more recent information, but also a number of new integration indicators. The latter are data in terms of crime and entry into higher education. Another new aspect of the Integration Monitor 2005 is the expansion of the analyses made to cover three cohorts of newcomers that came to the Netherlands in 1999, 2000 and 2001 respectively. Through the use of the Social Statistics Database (SSB) [Sociaal Statistisch Bestand] produced by Statistics Netherlands, with its data covering the entire population of the Netherlands, it has been possible, in many cases, to arrive at a detailed breakdown of groups according to their different countries of origin. In addition to a description of the traditional ‘big four’ (Turks, Moroccans, Surinamese and Antilleans/Arubans), we also indicate, where possible, how smaller immigrant populations, which have come to the Netherlands in recent years, are participating in society. Using longitudinal data, the Integration Monitor provides an insight into the progress of integration achieved by large and small origin groups over a longer period and in different domains of society. This is done by featuring trends over time and by monitoring cohorts of newcomers that settled in the Netherlands in a certain year, in order to see how they have fared. The Integration Monitor focuses on actual behaviour and on the actual social positions held by individuals, as opposed to attitudes, perceptions, subjective experience and opinions
