Mollusks of Candomblé: symbolic and ritualistic importance
Human societies utilize mollusks for myriad material and spiritual ends. An example of their use in a religious context is found in Brazil's African-derived belief systems. Candomblé, an Afro-Brazilian religion introduced during the 18th-19th centuries by enslaved Yoruba, includes various magical and liturgical uses of mollusks. This work inventoried the species utilized by adherents and to analyzed their symbolic and magical context. Data were obtained from Candomblé temples in two cities in the northeast of Brazil-Caruaru, in the state of Pernambuco, and Campina Grande, in the state of Paraíba. Questionnaires administered to eleven adepts revealed that at least nineteen mollusk species are being used. Shells from Monetaria moneta, M. annulus and Erosaria caputserpentis were cited by all of the interviewees. Three uses stood out: divination (jogo de búzios); utilization as ritual objects; and employment as sacrificial offerings (Igbin or Boi-de-Oxalá). The jogo de búzios (shell toss), employed in West Africa, Brazil and Cuba, is of fundamental importance to the cult, representing the means by which the faithful enter in contact with the divinities (Orixás) and consult people's futures (Odu). The utilization of mollusks in Candomblé is strongly influenced by ancient Yoruba myths (Itãs) which, having survived enslavement and generations of captive labor, continue to guide the lives of Brazil's African Diaspora

Medicinal plants used by women in Mecca: urban, Muslim and gendered knowledge
Background: This study explores medicinal plant knowledge and use among Muslim women in the city of Mecca,
Saudi Arabia. Ethnobotanical research in the region has focused on rural populations and male herbal healers in
cities, and based on these few studies, it is suggested that medicinal plant knowledge may be eroding. Here, we
document lay, female knowledge of medicinal plants in an urban centre, interpreting findings in the light of the
growing field of urban ethnobotany and gendered knowledge and in an Islamic context.
Methods: Free-listing, structured and semi-structured interviews were used to document the extent of medicinal
plant knowledge among 32 Meccan women. Vernacular names, modes of preparation and application, intended
therapeutic use and emic toxicological remarks were recorded. Women were asked where they learnt about
medicinal plants and if and when they preferred using medicinal plants over biomedical resources. Prior informed consent was always obtained. We compared the list of medicinal plants used by these Meccan women with medicinal plants previously documented in published literature.
Results: One hundred eighteen vernacular names were collected, corresponding to approximately 110 plants, including one algae. Of these, 95 were identified at the species level and 39 (41%) had not been previously cited in Saudi Arabian medicinal plant literature. Almost one half of the plants cited are food and flavouring plants. Meccan women interviewed learn about medicinal plants from their social network, mass media and written sources, and combine biomedical and medicinal plant health care. However, younger women more often prefer biomedical resources and learn from written sources and mass media.
Conclusions: The fairly small number of interviews conducted in this study was sufficient to reveal the singular body of medicinal plant knowledge held by women in Mecca and applied to treat common ailments. Plant availability in local shops and markets and inclusion in religious texts seem to shape the botanical diversity used by the Meccan women interviewed, and the use of foods and spices medicinally could be a global feature of urban ethnobotany. Ethnobotanical knowledge among women in Islamic communities may be changing due to access to mass media and biomedicine. We recognise the lack of documentation of the diversity of medicinal plant knowledge in the Arabian Peninsula and an opportunity to better understand gendered urban and rural knowledge

Comparative phylogenetic methods and the cultural evolution of medicinal plant use
Human life depends on plant biodiversity and the ways in which plants are used are culturally determined. Whilst anthropologists have used phylogenetic comparative methods (PCMs) to gain an increasingly sophisticated understanding of the evolution of political, religious, social, and material culture, plant use has been almost entirely neglected. Medicinal plants are of special interest because of their role in maintaining people’s health across the world. PCMs in particular, and cultural evolutionary theory in general, provide a framework in which to study the diversity of medicinal plant applications cross-culturally, and to infer changes in plant use through time. These methods can be applied to single medicinal plants as well as the entire set of plants used by a culture for medicine, and they account for the non-independence of data when testing for floristic, cultural or other drivers of plant use. The genetic legacy of fragmentation and overexploitation in the threatened medicinal African pepper-bark tree Warburgia salutaris
The pepper-bark tree (Warburgia salutaris) is one of the most highly valued medicinal plant species
worldwide. Native to southern Africa, this species has been extensively harvested for the bark, which
is widely used in traditional health practices. Illegal harvesting coupled with habitat degradation
has contributed to fragmentation of populations and a severe decline in its distribution. Even
though the species is included in the IUCN Red List as Endangered, genetic data that would help
conservation efforts and future re-introductions are absent. We therefore developed new molecular
markers to understand patterns of genetic diversity, structure, and gene flow of W. salutaris in
one of its most important areas of occurrence (Mozambique). In this study, we have shown that,
despite fragmentation and overexploitation, this species maintains a relatively high level of genetic
diversity supporting the existence of random mating. Two genetic groups were found corresponding
to the northern and southern locations. Our study suggests that, if local extinctions occurred in
Mozambique, the pepper-bark tree persisted in sufficient numbers to retain a large proportion of
genetic diversity. Management plans should concentrate on maintaining this high level of genetic

The Challenge of Examining Social Determinants of Health in People Living With Tourette Syndrome
Background: To examine the association between race, ethnicity, and parental educational attainment on tic-related outcomes among Tourette Syndrome (TS) participants in the Tourette Association of America International Consortium for Genetics (TAAICG) database. Methods: 723 participants in the TAAICG dataset aged ≤21 years were included. The relationships between tic-related outcomes and race and ethnicity were examined using linear and logistic regressions. Parametric and nonparametric tests were performed to examine the association between parental educational attainment and tic-related outcomes. Results: Race and ethnicity were collapsed as non-Hispanic white (N=566, 88.0%) versus Other (N=77, 12.0%). Tic symptom onset was earlier by 1.1 years (P < 0.0001) and TS diagnosis age was earlier by 0.9 years (P = 0.0045) in the Other group (versus non-Hispanic white). Sex and parental education as covariates did not contribute to the differences observed in TS diagnosis age. There were no significant group differences observed across the tic-related outcomes in parental education variable. Conclusions: Our study was limited by the low number of nonwhite or Hispanic individuals in the cohort. Racial and ethnic minoritized groups experienced an earlier age of TS diagnosis than non-Hispanic white individuals. Tic severity did not differ between the two groups, and parental educational attainment did not affect tic-related outcomes. There remain significant disparities and gaps in knowledge regarding TS and associated comorbid conditions. Our study suggests the need for more proactive steps to engage individuals with tic disorders from all racial and ethnic minoritized groups to participate in research studies.</p
Medicinal Plant Use and Health Sovereignty: Findings from the Tajik and Afghan Pamirs
Medicinal plants are indicators of indigenous
knowledge in the context of political volatility and sociocultural
and ecological change in the Pamir Mountains of
Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Medicinal plants are the
primary health care option in this region of Central Asia.
The main objective of this paper is to demonstrate that
medicinal plants contribute to health security and sovereignty
in a time of instability. We illustrate the nutritional
as well as medicinal significance of plants in the daily
lives of villagers. Based on over a decade and half of
research related to resilience and livelihood security, we
present plant uses in the context of mountain communities.
Villagers identified over 58 cultivated and noncultivated
plants and described 310 distinct uses within
63 categories of treatment and prevention. Presence of

Management of Vascular Risk Factors in the Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy Versus Stenting Trial (CREST)
BackgroundThe Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy Versus Stenting Trial (CREST) is a multicenter randomized trial of stenting versus endarterectomy in patients with symptomatic and asymptomatic carotid disease. This study assesses management of vascular risk factors.Methods and ResultsManagement was provided by the patient's physician, with biannual monitoring results collected by the local site. Therapeutic targets were low‐density lipoprotein, cholesterol <100 mg/dL, systolic blood pressure <140 mm Hg, fasting blood glucose <126 mg/dL, and nonsmoking status. Optimal control was defined as achieving all 4 goals concurrently. Generalized estimating equations were used to compare risk factors at baseline with those observed in scheduled follow‐up visits for up to 48 months. In the analysis cohort of 2210, significant improvements in risk‐factor control were observed across risk factors for all follow‐up visits compared with baseline. At 48 months, achievement of the low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol goal improved from 59.1% to 73.6% (P<0.001), achievement of the systolic blood pressure goal improved from 51.6% to 65.1% (P<0.001), achievement of the glucose goal improved from 74.9% to 80.7% (P=0.0101), and nonsmoking improved from 74.4% to 80.9% (P<0.0001). The percentage with optimal risk‐factor control also improved significantly, from 16.7% to 36.2% (P<0.001), but nearly 2 of 3 study participants did not achieve optimal control during the study.ConclusionsSite‐based risk‐factor control improved significantly in the first 6 months and over the long term in CREST but was often suboptimal. Purine Nucleoside Phosphorylase mediated molecular chemotherapy and conventional chemotherapy: A tangible union against chemoresistant cancer
Background Late stage Ovarian Cancer is essentially incurable primarily due to late diagnosis and its inherent heterogeneity. Single agent treatments are inadequate and generally lead to severe side effects at therapeutic doses. It is crucial to develop clinically relevant novel combination regimens involving synergistic modalities that target a wider repertoire of cells and lead to lowered individual doses. Stemming from this premise, this is the first report of two- and three-way synergies between Adenovirus-mediated Purine Nucleoside Phosphorylase based gene directed enzyme prodrug therapy (PNP-GDEPT), docetaxel and/or carboplatin in multidrug-resistant ovarian cancer cells. Methods The effects of PNP-GDEPT on different cellular processes were determined using Shotgun Proteomics analyses. The in vitro cell growth inhibition in differentially treated drug resistant human ovarian cancer cell lines was established using a cell-viability assay. The extent of synergy, additivity, or antagonism between treatments was evaluated using CalcuSyn statistical analyses. The involvement of apoptosis and implicated proteins in effects of different treatments was established using flow cytometry based detection of M30 (an early marker of apoptosis), cell cycle analyses and finally western blot based analyses. Results Efficacy of the trimodal treatment was significantly greater than that achieved with bimodal- or individual treatments with potential for 10-50 fold dose reduction compared to that required for individual treatments. Of note was the marked enhancement in apoptosis that specifically accompanied the combinations that included PNP-GDEPT and accordingly correlated with a shift in the expression of anti- and pro-apoptotic proteins. PNP-GDEPT mediated enhancement of apoptosis was reinforced by cell cycle analyses. Proteomic analyses of PNP-GDEPT treated cells indicated a dowregulation of proteins involved in oncogenesis or cancer drug resistance in treated cells with accompanying upregulation of apoptotic- and tumour- suppressor proteins. Conclusion Inclusion of PNP-GDEPT in regular chemotherapy regimens can lead to significant enhancement of the cancer cell susceptibility to the combined treatment. Overall, these data will underpin the development of regimens that can benefit patients with late stage ovarian cancer leading to significantly improved efficacy and increased quality of life
Living knowledge of the healing plants: Ethno-phytotherapy in the Chepang communities from the Mid-Hills of Nepal
Contribution of indigenous knowledge in developing more effective drugs with minimum or no side effects helped to realise importance of study of indigenous remedies and the conservation of biological resources. This study analysed indigenous knowledge regarding medicinal plants use among the Chepang communities from ward number 3 and 4 of Shaktikhor Village Development Committee located in the central mid hills of Nepal. Data were collected in a one-year period and included interviews with traditional healers and elders. Chepangs are rich in knowledge regarding use of different plants and were using a total 219 plant parts from 115 species including one mushroom (belonging 55 families) for medicinal uses. Out of these, 75 species had 118 different new medicinal uses and 18 of them were not reported in any previous documents from Nepal as medicinal plants. Spiritual belief, economy and limitation of alternative health facilities were cause of continuity of people's dependency on traditional healers. Change in socio-economic activities not only threatened traditional knowledge but also resource base of the area. Enforcement of local institution in management of forest resources and legitimating traditional knowledge and practices could help to preserve indigenous knowledge
