    The Apology Strategies in Simulated Classroom Situations Used by the Female and the Male Students of the English Department of Petra Christian University, Surabaya

    This thesis is the study of apology strategies and the similarities and/or the differences of the types of apology strategies used by the female and the male students. My respondents consist of 20 female and 20 male students of the English Department. This study used the theory of Ogiermann (2009). I constructed my own Discourse Completion Test (DCT) questionnaire consisting of 10 simulated classroom situations. The quantitative approach was used in this study. The finding revealed that the first three most dominant types of strategies used by the both of them were expression of regret, acceptance of responsibility and justification. The similarities and/or the differences of the three most dominant types of apology between the female and the male students were found in the percentage use of apology strategies. Expression of regret was used 52.8% by the female students and 47% by the male students. The female students used 53.3% and the male students used 46.6% in acceptance of responsibility. Justification was used 52.7% by the female and 47.3% by the male students. For that reason, the female and the male students tend to use the same types of apology strategies, although their percentages are only slightly different

    We present the design, fabrication and experimental validation of a novel device that exploits the amplification of displacement and attenuation of structural stiffness in the post-buckling deformation of slender columns to obtain pico-Newton force and nanometer displacement resolution even under an optical microscope. The extremely small size, purely mechanical sensing scheme and vacuum compatibility of the instrument makes it compatible with existing visualization tools of nanotechnology. The instrument has a wide variety of potential applications ranging from electro-mechanical characterization of one dimensional solids to single biological cells

    The heat of formation of CN radicals and radiative lifetimes of the A 1 Sigma - state of C2N2

    Radiative lifetimes have been measured for the stable vibrational levels of the A 1 sigma - electronic state of C2N2. They range from 1.3 microsec for the 4(sub 0)(sup 1) level to 0.66 microsec for the 1(sub 0)(sup 1) 4(sub 0)(sup 1) level and in general decrease with increasing vibrational excitation. Self-quenching rate constants range from gas kinetic to ten times that. Foreign gas quenching rates are slower. Observation of emission from the 1(sub 0)(sup 1) 4(sub 0)(sup 1) level sets a lower limit for the heat of formation of CN of 439.11 kJ/mol

    We present analytical solutions to the nonlinear equations describing the behavior of a gas of neutrinos with two flavors. Self-maintained coherent flavor oscillations are shown to occur when the gas density exceeds a critical value determined by the neutrino masses and the mean neutrino energy in the gas.     -Today, proprietary home automation targets very specific applications which operate mostly on a cable based infrastructure. In contrast to that, our implementation builds on a wireless platform for the automatic control of house hold electrical appliances. The nodes gather sensor readings in a home and transmit them to a central automation server. There, the readings are matched against a list of script statements. When there is a match, a specific action is performed. An important property of the system is that the control of all home appliances is done by means of the ubiquitous Infrared and Wi-Fi wireless technologies. This way, the co-operation between manufacturers is not a necessity in order to connect devices to the home automation network

    We reexamine the oscillator level truncation method in the bosonic String Field Theory (SFT) by calculation the descent relation =Z_3<V_2|. For the ghost sector we use the fermionic vertices in the standard oscillator basis. We propose two new schemes for calculations. In the first one we assume that the insertion satisfies the overlap equation for the vertices and in the second one we use the direct calculations.     Electron Microprobe Chemical Dating of Uraninite as a Reconnaissance Tool for Leucogranite Geochronology

    We suggest that electron microprobe techniques may be employed to date Tertiary samples of uraninite (UO~2~), which can contain very high concentrations of radiogenic Pb after only a few million of years of U and Th decay. Although uraninite is regarded as a rare accessory mineral, it is relatively abundant in leucogranitic rocks such as those found in the Himalayan orogen. We apply the U-Th-total Pb electron microprobe chemical dating method to a uraninite crystal from a ca. 18.3 Ma dike of the Mugu granite from the Upper Mustang region of central Nepal. With this technique, we calculate a mean chemical date that is consistent with isotope-dilution thermal ionization mass spectrometry (ID-TIMS) U-Pb dates obtained from seven other uraninite grains and a monazite crystal from the same sample. Electron microprobe chemical dating yields results that typically will be an order of magnitude less precise than conventional dates: in the specific case of the Mugu granite, single point chemical dates each have ca. 1.5 Ma 2[sigma] (95%) confidence level uncertainties. However, the mean chemical date of 15 point analyses of the crystal we study has a 2SE (2 standard error) uncertainty of ca. 400 ka, comparable to uncertainties obtained with ID-TIMS. These results show that electron microprobe chemical dating of uraninite has substantial promise as a reconnaissance tool for the geochronology of young granitic rocks. The electron microprobe work also reveals substantial chemical complexity within uraninite that must be taken into account. The analyzed crystal displays a texturally and chemically distinctive core and rim that suggests episodic growth. Concentration gradients in U, Th, and Y across the boundary imply diffusive modification. We estimate the diffusivity of U, Th, and Y in uraninite at ca. 700 &#xb0;C to be &#x3e; 10-7 cm2 s-1. In contrast, Pb shows no distinctive concentration gradient across the core-rim boundary, implying that Pb has a much higher diffusivity in uraninite than U, Th, or Y. We estimate that Pb loss of as much as ca. 8.9% has occurred in the uraninite grains we analyzed by ID-TIMS

    Hydroacoustic evaluation of spawning red hind (Epinephelus guttatus) aggregations along the coast of Puerto Rico in 2002 and 2003

    Red hind (Epinephelus guttatus) have been overfished in the Caribbean and were included with seven other regional grouper species deemed vulnerable to risk of extinction. The Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources desired to map spawning red hind aggregations within commonwealth waters as part of their resource management program for the species. Mobile hydroacoustic surveys were conducted over 3-day periods in 2002 and 2003, indexed to the full moon phase in February or March when red hind were known to aggregate. Four vessels concurrently sampled the southwest, south, and southeast coasts of Puerto Rico in 2002. In 2003, three vessels conducted complementary surveys of the northwest, north, and northeast coasts of the island, completing a circuit of the coastal shelf-spawning habitat. These surveys indicated that red hind spawning aggregations were prevalent along the south and west coasts, and sparse along the north coast during the survey periods. Highest spawning red hind concentrations were observed in three areas offshore of the west coast of Puerto Rico, around Mona and Desecheo islands (20,443 and 10,559 fish/km2, respectively) and in the Bajo de Cico seasonal closed area (4,544 fish/km2). Following both 2002 and 2003 surveys, a series of controlled acoustic measurements of known local fish species in net pens were conducted to assess the mean target strength (acoustic backscatter) of each group. Ten species of fish were measured, including red hind (E. guttatus), coney (E. fulvus), white grunt (Haemulon plumieri), pluma (Calamus pennatula), blue tang (Acanthurus coeruleus), squirrel fish (Holocentrus spp.), black durgeon (Melichtyhs niger), ocean file fish (Canthidermis sufflamen), ocean surgeon fish (Acanthurus bahianus), and butter grouper (Mycteroperca spp.). In general, the mean target strength results from the caged fish experiments were in agreement with published target strength length relationships, with the exception of white grunt and pluma

    Nomadic Base Station (NBS): a Software Defined Radio (SDR) based Architecture for Capacity Enhancement in Mobile Communications Networks

    In this research work, the problem of congestion that leads to dropped calls at GSM cell sites and drastic reduction in network capacity is addressed. We designed a novel GSM base station architecture named Nomadic Base Station (NBS) which is based on Software Defined Radio (SDR) architecture and simulated the LNA for its receiver front-end. The NBS receiver LNA selects and amplifies GSM signal bursts operating at 900MHz and 1800MHz Radio Frequency Band. The later stages translate the Radio Frequency (RF) signal to Intermediate Frequency (IF) signal. This implements the SDR technology by digitizing the IF signal into bit streams that can be processed on generic Central Processing Unit (CPU) using custom written signal processing software
