A Novel Task for the Investigation of Action Acquisition

    Get PDF
We present a behavioural task designed for the investigation of how novel instrumental actions are discovered and learnt. The task consists of free movement with a manipulandum, during which the full range of possible movements can be explored by the participant and recorded. A subset of these movements, the ‘target’, is set to trigger a reinforcing signal. The task is to discover what movements of the manipulandum evoke the reinforcement signal. Targets can be defined in spatial, temporal, or kinematic terms, can be a combination of these aspects, or can represent the concatenation of actions into a larger gesture. The task allows the study of how the specific elements of behaviour which cause the reinforcing signal are identified, refined and stored by the participant. The task provides a paradigm where the exploratory motive drives learning and as such we view it as in the tradition of Thorndike [1]. Most importantly it allows for repeated measures, since when a novel action is acquired the criterion for triggering reinforcement can be changed requiring a new action to be discovered. Here, we present data using both humans and rats as subjects, showing that our task is easily scalable in difficulty, adaptable across species, and produces a rich set of behavioural measures offering new and valuable insight into the action learning process

Design methodology makes it possible to plan and organise many different processes to obtain an optimal object. Students taught at the Textile Architecture specialization gain skills in design and technology, and this combination facilitates them to cooperate with industry. Recruitment expectations of companies reveal innovative fields of activity in this area. A new subject – Design Methodology for Corporations becomes a link in the process of teaching which will prepare graduates well for work in the clothing industry. The article shows a path of education of students at the Faculty of Material Technologies and Textile Design extended with the elements of artistic education. It takes up the broad topic of education in clothing design by discussing subsequent stages of education. It discusses a new subject, i.e. Designing for Corporations, which allows for a combination of artistic and technological skills. Finally it indicates potential pathways to multidisciplinary education.Metodologia projektowania pozwala na planowanie i organizowanie wielu różnych procesów dla uzyskania optymalnego przedmiotu. Studenci kształceni na specjalności architektura ubioru nabywają etapami coraz szerszych umiejętności projektowych i technologicznych, a takie połączenie ułatwia współpracę z przemysłem.

Special conditions of applying curtain fabrics, i.e. vertical hanging and lightening with transmitted light, require a different approach to designing. It was found that weaving patterns can significantly affect the continuity of the structure, particularly in the pattern area. In such cases, the effect of patterning may be disturbed by the light transmitted through uncontrolled clearances of a fabric. The study identifies the need to modify the structure, based on basic knowledge of the geometry of a fabric’s structure. A repair system aided by an original computer program was developed on such a basis. The method was validated for structures with a stratified system of thread that were produced with a Picanol rapier loom. For the purposes of results presentation, ImageJ software for computer image analysis was used.Specjalne warunki stosowania tkanin zasłonowych, tj. pionowe zawieszenie, w oświetleniu światłem przechodzącym wymagają innego podejścia do projektowania. Do celów prezentacji wyników użyto program ImageJ do komputerowej analizy obrazu
