Quantitative Analysis of Photo-Thermal Stability of CdSe/CdS Core-Shell Nanocrystals
We report here investigations on the instability in luminescence of bare
(TOPO-stabilized) and CdS- capped CdSe particles under infrared radiation.
During photo-thermal annealing the formation of oxide layers on the surfaces of
the particles create defect states. Consequently there is a reduction in
particle size. These two effects control the light output from the samples. We
make a quantitative comparison of the stability of bare CdSe and core-shell
type CdSe-CdS particles under photo-annealing. Using diffusion theory, we show
that the volume of the oxide layer, adhered to the crystallites, play a
dominant role in controlling the luminosity of the particles.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
A non-destructive analytic tool for nanostructured materials : Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy
Modern materials science requires efficient processing and characterization
techniques for low dimensional systems. Raman spectroscopy is an important
non-destructive tool, which provides enormous information on these materials.
This understanding is not only interesting in its own right from a physicist's
point of view, but can also be of considerable importance in optoelectronics
and device applications of these materials in nanotechnology. The commercial
Raman spectrometers are quite expensive. In this article, we have presented a
relatively less expensive set-up with home-built collection optics attachment.
The details of the instrumentation have been described. Studies on four classes
of nanostructures - Ge nanoparticles, porous silicon (nanowire), carbon
nanotubes and 2D InGaAs quantum layers, demonstrate that this unit can be of
use in teaching and research on nanomaterials.Comment: 32 pages, 13 figure
Storing entanglement of nuclear spins via Uhrig Dynamical Decoupling
Stroboscopic spin flips have already been shown to prolong the coherence
times of quantum systems under noisy environments. Uhrig's dynamical decoupling
scheme provides an optimal sequence for a quantum system interacting with a
dephasing bath. Several experimental demonstrations have already verified the
efficiency of such dynamical decoupling schemes in preserving single qubit
coherences. In this work we describe the experimental study of Uhrig's
dynamical decoupling in preserving two-qubit entangled states using an ensemble
of spin-1/2 nuclear pairs in solution state. We find that the performance of
odd-order Uhrig sequences in preserving entanglement is superior to both
even-order Uhrig sequences and periodic spin-flip sequences. We also find that
there exists an optimal length of the Uhrig sequence at which the decoherence
time gets boosted from a few seconds to about 30 seconds.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure
A Hybrid model for the origin of photoluminescence from Ge nanocrystals in SiO matrix
In spite of several articles, the origin of visible luminescence from
germanium nanocrystals in SiO matrix is controversial even today. Some
authors attribute the luminescence to quantum confinement of charge carriers in
these nanocrystals. On the other hand, surface or defect states formed during
the growth process, have also been proposed as the source of luminescence in
this system. We have addressed this long standing query by simultaneous
photoluminescence and Raman measurements on germanium nanocrystals embedded in
SiO matrix, grown by two different techniques: (i) low energy
ion-implantation and (ii) atom beam sputtering. Along with our own experimental
observations, we have summarized relevant information available in the
literature and proposed a \emph{Hybrid Model} to explain the visible
photoluminescence from nanocrystalline germanium in SiO matrix.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figure
Time allocation between paid and unpaid work among men and women: an empirical study of Indian villages
The paper examines the time allocation between paid work (wage earning or self-employed work generally termed as employment work) and unpaid (domestic chores/care work generally termed as non-employment work) along with wage rates, imputed earnings, and occupational structure among men and women and according to different social groups to establish the extent to which the rural labour market is discriminated by sex and social group. The major objective of the paper is to show the differential in wage income between men and women in farm and non-farm activities. The paper also shows the division of time between employment and non-employment activities by men and women. The paper uses high-frequency data and applies econometric techniques to know the factors behind time allocation among different activities across gender. The study finds that males spend more hours on employment work and work at a higher wage rate than females. As a result, a vast monetary income gap between men and women is observed, even though women worked more hours if employment and non-employment activities are jointly taken into consideration. Time spent on employment work and non-employment (mainly domestic chores) has been found to vary significantly due to social identity, household wealth, land, income, education, and skill. The segregation of labour market by sex was evident in this study, with men shifting to non-farm occupations with greater monetary returns and continued dependence on women’s farm activities. Enhancing the ownership of land and other assets, encouraging women’s participation particularly among minorities, and improving health are some of the policy recommendations directed from this study to enhance participation in employment work and shifting towards higher wage income employment.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Electron and Phonon Confinement and New Surface Phonon Modes in CdSe-CdS Core-Shell Nanocrystals
Optical and vibrational properties of bare and CdS shelled CdSe
nanocrystalline particles are investigated. To confirm the formation of such
nanocrystals in our samples we estimate their average particle sizes and size
distributions using TEM measurements. From the line profile analysis of the
images the core-shell structure in the particles has been confirmed. The blue
shift in optical absorption spectra, analyzed using theoretical estimates based
on the effective bond order model, establishes the electron confinement in the
nanoparticles. Unique characteristics of the nanocrystals (which are absent in
the corresponding bulk material), such as confinement of optical phonons and
the appearance of surface phonons, are then discussed. Making use of the
dielectric response function model we are able to match the experimental and
theoretical values of the frequencies of the surface phonons. We believe that
our studies using optical probes provide further evidence on the existence of
core-shell structures in CdSe-CdS type materials.Comment: 19 pages 8 figure
Non-invasive biomarkers and pulmonary function in smokers
Limited information exists regarding measurement, reproducibility and interrelationships of non-invasive biomarkers in smokers. We compared exhaled breath condensate (EBC) leukotriene B4 (LTB4) and 8-isoprostane, exhaled nitric oxide, induced sputum, spirometry, plethysmography, impulse oscillometry and methacholine reactivity in 18 smokers and 10 non-smokers. We assessed the relationships between these measurements and within-subject reproducibility of EBC biomarkers in smokers. Compared to non-smokers, smokers had significantly lower MMEF % predicted (mean 64.1 vs 77.7, p = 0.003), FEV1/FVC (mean 76.2 vs 79.8 p = 0.05), specific conductance (geometric mean 1.2 vs 1.6, p = 0.02), higher resonant frequency (mean 15.5 vs 9.9, p = 0.01) and higher EBC 8-isoprostane (geometric mean 49.9 vs 8.9 pg/ml p = 0.001). Median EBC pH values were similar, but a subgroup of smokers had airway acidification (pH < 7.2) not observed in non-smokers. Smokers had predominant sputum neutrophilia (mean 68.5%). Repeated EBC measurements showed no significant differences between group means, but Bland Altman analysis showed large individual variability. EBC 8-isoprostane correlated with EBC LTB4 (r = 0.78, p = 0.0001). Sputum supernatant IL-8 correlated with total neutrophil count per gram of sputum (r = 0.52, p = 0.04) and with EBC pH (r = −0.59, p = 0.02). In conclusion, smokers had evidence of small airway dysfunction, increased airway resistance, reduced lung compliance, airway neutrophilia and oxidative stress
NMR implementation of Quantum Delayed-Choice Experiment
We report the first experimental demonstration of quantum delayed-choice
experiment via nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. An ensemble of molecules
each with two spin-1/2 nuclei are used as target and the ancilla qubits to
perform the quantum circuit corresponding the delayed-choice setup. As expected
in theory, our experiments clearly demonstrate the continuous morphing of the
target qubit between particle-like and wave-like behaviors. The experimental
