    Style Investing And Firm Innovation

    We document that transient, dedicated and quasi-indexed institutional investors exhibit a high degree of within-group heterogeneity with respect to their investment styles (i.e., growth, value, and balanced). We find that growth institutional investors enhance firm innovation in terms of R&D expenditures, R&D intensity, quantity and quality of patents and patent radicalness while value institutional investors impede innovation. Balanced investors have no significant association with innovation. Findings are consistent with style investing literature that growth and value styles are substitutes. Using investment styles, we present evidence that reconcile literature\u27s mixed findings on how transient and dedicated investors affect R&D and innovation, and why quasi-indexed investors, the largest group among all investors, have an insignificant effect. We also show that the effect of institutional investors depends on the firm\u27s relative level of innovativeness

    © 2020 Wiley Periodicals LLCIntroduction: Pericardial effusion develops due to different etiologies. The main goals of our study are to understand the etiology and determine whether the amount of pericardial effusion is significant in terms of malignancy. Material and Methods: 142 patients with pericardial effusion, who met the criteria between 1 January 2014 and 1 January 2019, were retrospectively analyzed. All of these patients underwent operation with the subxiphoidal approach. The fluid samples were sent to the microbiology and pathology laboratories for evaluation. Patients underwent follow-up after 1 month. Results: Of the patients included in this study, 72 (61%) of 118 patients were operated on under general anesthesia with a laryngeal mask, and 46 (39%) underwent sedation and local anesthesia. The etiologies found in patients were as follows: effusions resulting from malignancy in 27 (22.9%), idiopathic in 24 (20.3%), cardiac causes (depending on the use of anticoagulants or postoperation) in 22 (18.6%), uremia in 20 (16.9%), infection in 18 (15.3%), and heart failure in 7 patients. The amount of fluid drained from the patients was 661.61 ± 458.34 mL. Out of 27 patients with malignancy, 21 (77.8%) had drainage over 500 mL of effusion fluid, and 6 (22.2%) had drainage under 500 mL. Patients who had positive results tended to have drainage over 500 mL compared with patients who had negative results in terms of malignancy (P =.033). Conclusion: The subxiphoidal approach to pericardial effusion is an easily applicable operation, whether therapeutic or diagnostic. The advantages of the subxiphoidal approach include drainage of all of the fluid and ease of sampling the pericardial fluid. We believe that the amount of fluid drained can lead us to consider malignancy as an etiology

    Behind the scene: Paracetamol hypersensitivity in children.

    Background Paracetamol, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, is commonly being used for fever and pain relief worldwide. The aim of this study was to evaluate children with a suspected history of paracetamol hypersensitivity. Methods Sixty patients who were referred to our clinic in between January 2015 and December 2018 with a suspected history of paracetamol hypersensitivity were included. Reactions were classified according to the European Network for Drug Allergy (ENDA)/Global Allergy and Asthma European Network classification and European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI)/ENDA Position Paper. Diagnoses were confirmed by skin tests and oral challenge tests (OCTs). In those with verified paracetamol hypersensitivity, an OCT with a strong COX-1 inhibitor was performed to classify the type of the reaction to refer as either selective or cross-intolerance hypersensitivity. A subsequent OCT with a selective COX-2 inhibitor was performed in those cross-intolerant patients to find out a safe alternative drug. Results Sixty OCTs with paracetamol were performed to patients with a median age of 8.5 years, and hypersensitivity to paracetamol was verified in 8 patients. Four children were classified as selective responders, and 3 were classified as cross-intolerant after OCT with a COX-1 inhibitor. Overall, skin test positivity for paracetamol was detected in only one patient, in whom OCT with paracetamol was negative. In all 3 cross-intolerant patients, a safe alternative non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug was identified after an OCT with a selective COX-2 inhibitor. Conclusion OCT stands as the gold-standard procedure in verifying the diagnosis of patients with paracetamol-induced drug hypersensitivity, as well as, in defining the type of reactions and finding out safe alternative drugs
