Broken Symmetry as a Stabilizing Remnant

The Goldberger-Wise mechanism enables one to stabilize the length of the warped extra dimension employed in Randall-Sundrum models. In this work we generalize this mechanism to models with multiple warped throats sharing a common ultraviolet brane. For independent throats this generalization is straight forward. If the throats possess a discrete interchange symmetry like Z_n the stabilizing dynamics may respect the symmetry, resulting in equal throat lengths, or they may break it. In the latter case the ground state of an initially symmetric configuration is a stabilized asymmetric configuration in which the throat lengths differ. We focus on two- (three-) throat setups with a Z_2 (Z_3) interchange symmetry and present stabilization dynamics suitable for either breaking or maintaining the symmetry. Though admitting more general application, our results are relevant for existing models in the literature, including the two throat model with Kaluza-Klein parity and the three throat model of flavor based on a broken Z_3 symmetry.Comment: 23 pages; v2 minor cosmetic chang

In today\u27s society people\u27s locational residential preference is no longer dependent on the distance from the Central Business District. With the demise of the concept of the friction of distance other accessibility nodes, besides the central business district, such as and retail and suburban employment are necessary attributes towards the determination and influence of land rents. Where this is the case, the hedonic regression methods analysis to explain house prices should employ distance variables corresponding to each of the urban nodes. However, these distance measures may be highly intercorrelated, thereby posing a problem of spatial collinearity. Two authors have examined and attempted to reduce spatial collinearity from a purely contrived theoretical level. They found that problems arising from spatial collinearity can be avoided or substantially lessened by carefully selecting the geographic domain from which observations are drawn. This thesis explores the problems of spatial collinearity from an empirical perspective through the use of a data set containing housing characteristics and prices from the Kitchener-Waterloo area. A regression model was run, such that the calculated spatial collinearity could be compared to the theoretical findings from one of the above authors. It was found that the extent of collinearity is indeed influenced by the spatial configuration of nodes relative to the data range; however, a discrepancy occurred in the type of pattern that was needed to reduce this. Instead what was discovered was that the optimum spatial configuration of the data was not as relevant to the reduction of spatial collinearity as was the actual distances between the nodes

Mandatory ISP Filtering for a Clean Feed to Australian Internet Subscribers

    Get PDF
The Australian Government intends to mandate filtering at the Internet Service Provider (ISP) level to provide a “clean feed” to all subscribers. It claims the current arrangement that includes optional filtering at the Personal Computer (PC) level has failed to protect children from unsuitable Internet content. This paper addresses three key questions that are relevant to IT professionals everywhere because they concern important societal and ethical issues. First, has the current co-regulatory system failed to protect children? Second, is a “clean feed” feasible and practicable? Finally, even if a “clean feed” is feasible and practicable should the Government legislate for it

Workplace Privacy and Surveillance: A Matter of Distributive Justice

ICT professionals should be concerned about the use made of their artefacts. ICT enable workplace surveillance on an unprecedented scale and increasingly at a level that no employee activity can escape it. We cannot expect employees and employers to formulate an agreed set of rules regarding privacy and surveillance rights that are considered fair or just to both. The reality is that there exists an asymmetrical distribution of power that favours the employers and so they would prevail. This paper suggests an approach to resolving the conflicting interests associated with workplace privacy and surveillance. It suggests the discourse be in terms of justice and applies Rawls theory of distributive justice. It then evaluates the Workplace Surveillance Act 2005 of New South Wales. It is one of the few examples of specific workplace surveillance legislation in the world. It finds that when evaluated against Rawls fair rules it is seriously deficient and represents a missed opportunity to resolve the conflicting interests

Major natural disasters that struck Indonesia have undermined many traditional and modern building technology . In general the structure of the multi-storey building in the form of an open frame structure without shear walls of reinforced concrete with brick walls as fillers. Evaluation of the structural components to be seen how different reinforcement detailing structural elements of reinforced concrete beams were evaluated according to (SNI 1726 : 2012) and (SNI 2847 : 2013) , knowing the strength of the reinforcement installed in the field by calculating the analysis looks for existing bending and shear beam . The evaluation was done on the structure of the 10 floor hotel in Semarang with Special Moment Frame System bearers (SRPMK) . The results showed that the whole drift rate to a 10th Floor Hotel at Semarang meet the requirements (Δ) 25 mm , clean spaces between layers meet the requirements of > 40 mm . Reinforcement transverse mounted on a pedestal D10-100 installed as far 1 / 4L (1637.5 mm) to meet the requirements detailing 100 mm 2h (1200 mm) and at midspan mounted D150-100 , meet the requirements detailling < d / 2 ( 270.25 mm ) . The length of the connection throughput for longitudinal reinforcement ld (740 mm) < to the terms detailing 48dB (912 mm)

Long-Term Care in the United States: History, Financing, and Directions for Reform

This book is a concise survey of the development of U.S. long-term care and its financing, with comparisons with other rich countries. It also includes a brief comparative account of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States and several other countries. The study finds much that is amiss with American long-term care and proposes three sets of progressively more ambitious reforms.https://research.upjohn.org/up_press/1290/thumbnail.jp
