Effect of retardation on the dynamics of entanglement between atoms
The role of retardation in the entanglement dynamics of two distant atoms
interacting with a multi-mode field of a ring cavity is discussed. The
retardation is associated with a finite time required for light to travel
between the atoms located at a finite distance and between the atoms and the
cavity boundaries. We explore features in the concurrence indicative of
retardation and show how these features evolve depending on the initial state
of the system, distance between the atoms and the number of modes to which the
atoms are coupled. In particular, we consider the short-time and the long time
dynamics for both the multi- and sub-wavelength distances between the atoms. It
is found that the retardation effects can qualitatively modify the entanglement
dynamics of the atoms not only at multi- but also at sub-wavelength distances.
We follow the temporal evolution of the concurrence and find that at short
times of the evolution the retardation induces periodic sudden changes of
entanglement. To analyze where the entanglement lies in the space spanned by
the state vectors of the system, we introduce the collective Dicke states of
the atomic system that explicitly account for the sudden changes as a periodic
excitation of the atomic system to the maximally entangled symmetric state. At
long times, the retardation gives rise to periodic beats in the concurrence
that resemble the phenomenon of collapses and revivals in the Jaynes-Cummings
model. In addition, we identify parameter values and initial conditions at
which the atoms remain separable or are entangled without retardation during
the entire evolution time, but exhibit the phenomena of sudden birth and sudden
death of entanglement when the retardation is included.Comment: 16 pages, 14 figure
The IDENTIFY study: the investigation and detection of urological neoplasia in patients referred with suspected urinary tract cancer - a multicentre observational study
Objective
To evaluate the contemporary prevalence of urinary tract cancer (bladder cancer, upper tract urothelial cancer [UTUC] and renal cancer) in patients referred to secondary care with haematuria, adjusted for established patient risk markers and geographical variation.
Patients and Methods
This was an international multicentre prospective observational study. We included patients aged â„16 years, referred to secondary care with suspected urinary tract cancer. Patients with a known or previous urological malignancy were excluded. We estimated the prevalence of bladder cancer, UTUC, renal cancer and prostate cancer; stratified by age, type of haematuria, sex, and smoking. We used a multivariable mixed-effects logistic regression to adjust cancer prevalence for age, type of haematuria, sex, smoking, hospitals, and countries.
Results
Of the 11 059 patients assessed for eligibility, 10 896 were included from 110 hospitals across 26 countries. The overall adjusted cancer prevalence (n = 2257) was 28.2% (95% confidence interval [CI] 22.3â34.1), bladder cancer (n = 1951) 24.7% (95% CI 19.1â30.2), UTUC (n = 128) 1.14% (95% CI 0.77â1.52), renal cancer (n = 107) 1.05% (95% CI 0.80â1.29), and prostate cancer (n = 124) 1.75% (95% CI 1.32â2.18). The odds ratios for patient risk markers in the model for all cancers were: age 1.04 (95% CI 1.03â1.05; P < 0.001), visible haematuria 3.47 (95% CI 2.90â4.15; P < 0.001), male sex 1.30 (95% CI 1.14â1.50; P < 0.001), and smoking 2.70 (95% CI 2.30â3.18; P < 0.001).
Conclusions
A better understanding of cancer prevalence across an international population is required to inform clinical guidelines. We are the first to report urinary tract cancer prevalence across an international population in patients referred to secondary care, adjusted for patient risk markers and geographical variation. Bladder cancer was the most prevalent disease. Visible haematuria was the strongest predictor for urinary tract cancer
Increasing frailty is associated with higher prevalence and reduced recognition of delirium in older hospitalised inpatients: results of a multi-centre study
Purpose:
Delirium is a neuropsychiatric disorder delineated by an acute change in cognition, attention, and consciousness. It is common, particularly in older adults, but poorly recognised. Frailty is the accumulation of deficits conferring an increased risk of adverse outcomes. We set out to determine how severity of frailty, as measured using the CFS, affected delirium rates, and recognition in hospitalised older people in the United Kingdom.
Methods:
Adults over 65 years were included in an observational multi-centre audit across UK hospitals, two prospective rounds, and one retrospective note review. Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS), delirium status, and 30-day outcomes were recorded.
Results:
The overall prevalence of delirium was 16.3% (483). Patients with delirium were more frail than patients without delirium (median CFS 6 vs 4). The risk of delirium was greater with increasing frailty [OR 2.9 (1.8â4.6) in CFS 4 vs 1â3; OR 12.4 (6.2â24.5) in CFS 8 vs 1â3]. Higher CFS was associated with reduced recognition of delirium (OR of 0.7 (0.3â1.9) in CFS 4 compared to 0.2 (0.1â0.7) in CFS 8). These risks were both independent of age and dementia.
Conclusion:
We have demonstrated an incremental increase in risk of delirium with increasing frailty. This has important clinical implications, suggesting that frailty may provide a more nuanced measure of vulnerability to delirium and poor outcomes. However, the most frail patients are least likely to have their delirium diagnosed and there is a significant lack of research into the underlying pathophysiology of both of these common geriatric syndromes

Development of genetic tools for heterologous protein expression in a pentoseâutilizing environmental isolate of Pseudomonas putida
Pseudomonas putida has emerged as a promising host for the conversion of biomass-derived sugars and aromatic intermediates into commercially relevant biofuels and bioproducts. Most of the strain development studies previously published have focused on P. putida KT2440, which has been engineered to produce a variety of non-native bioproducts. However, P. putida is not capable of metabolizing pentose sugars, which can constitute up to 25% of biomass hydrolysates. Related P. putida isolates that metabolize a larger fraction of biomass-derived carbon may be attractive as complementary hosts to P. putida KT2440. Here we describe genetic tool development for P. putida M2, a soil isolate that can metabolize pentose sugars. The functionality of five inducible promoter systems and 12 ribosome binding sites was assessed to regulate gene expression. The utility of these expression systems was confirmed by the production of indigoidine from C6 and C5 sugars. Chromosomal integration and expression of non-native genes was achieved by using chassis-independent recombinase-assisted genome engineering (CRAGE) for single-step gene integration of biosynthetic pathways directly into the genome of P. putida M2. These genetic tools provide a foundation to develop hosts complementary to P. putida KT2440 and expand the ability of this versatile microbial group to convert biomass to bioproducts
