    New Mediterranean Marine biodiversity records (June 2013)

    This paper concerns records of species that have extended their distribution in the Mediterranean Sea. The finding of the rare brackish angiosperm Althenia filiformis in the island of Cyprus is interesting since its insertion in the Red Data Book of the Flora of Cyprus is suggested. The following species enriched the flora or fauna lists of the relevant countries: the red alga Sebdenia dichotoma (Greece), the hydrachnid mite Pontarachna adriatica (Slovenia), and the thalassinid Gebiacantha talismani (Turkey). Several alien species were recorded in new Mediterranean localities. The record of the burrowing goby Trypauchen vagina in the North Levantine Sea (Turkish coast), suggests the start of spreading of this Lessepsian immigrant in the Mediterranean Sea. The findings of the following species indicate the extension of their occurrence in the Mediterranean Sea: the foraminifer Amphistegina lobifera (island of Zakynthos, Greece), the medusa Cassiopea andromeda (Syria), the copepod Centropages furcatus (Aegean Sea), the decapod shrimp Melicertus hathor (island of Kastellorizo, Greece), the crab Menoethius monoceros (Gulf of Tunis), the barnacles Balanus trigonus, Megabalanus tintinnabulum, Megabalanus coccopoma and the bivalves Chama asperella, Cucurbitula cymbium (Saronikos Gulf, Greece)

    Total and caspase-cleaved cytokeratin 18 in chronic cholecystitis: A prospective study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Cell death mode has been studied in cancer, autoimmune, and neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, apoptosis and necrosis are investigated for the first time in patients with chronic calculous cholecystitis.</p> <p>Methods and materials</p> <p>Thirty five (35) patients (27 women and 8 men, aged 55.65 ± 13.48 years) with symptomatic chronic calculous cholecystitis underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The early specific apoptotic tendency (caspase-cleaved cytokeratin 18) was studied in these patients with M30 Apoptosense ELISA and the total cytokerarin 18 (both derived from apoptosis and necrosis) with M65 ELISA. The ratio M30/M65 (caspase-cleaved to total cytokeratin 18) was also computed. According to the histopathological examination, the patients were divided in two groups: group A included patients with chronic inactive cholecystitis (n = 10), and group B those with chronic active cholecystitis (n = 25).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The concentrations of caspase-cleaved cytokerarin 18 (CK18), and especially those of total CK18, were higher in bile samples than in serum samples. In group B, there were significant differences between serum and bile samples regarding both caspase-cleaved CK18 and total CK18. Cells staining positive for caspase-cleaved CK18 were present in the epithelial cells of the mucosa of the gallbladder.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>CK18 is expressed in the gallbladder epithelial cells. The concentrations of both caspase-cleaved CK18 and total CK18 were higher in bile samples than in serum samples. The levels of total CK18, as well as caspase-cleaved CK18, do not seem to differ between active and inactive chronic cholecystitis.</p

    Antideuteron production in 158 AGeV/c Pb + Pb collisions

    The invariant cross section as a function of transverse momentum for antideuterons produced in 158 A GeV/c per nucleon Pb+Pb central collisions has been measured by the NA44 experiment at CERN. This measurement, together with a measurement of antiprotons, allows for the determination of the antideuteron coalescence parameter. The extracted coalescence radius is found to agree with the deuteron coalescence radius and radii determined from two particle correlations. (27 refs)

    Prognostic role of angiogenesis in operable carcinoma of the gallbladder

    The prognostic significance of intratumoral angiogenesis was investigated in 62 patients with stage I-III carcinomas of the gallbladder treated with simple cholecystectomy. Microvessel density (MVD) was assessed immunohistochemically, using the alkaline phosphatase/antialkaline phosphatase method and the monoclonal antibody CD31. The mean MVD was 30.5 vessels per X200 optical field. Using the thirty-third and the sixty-sixth percentile, the patients were grouped into three MVD categories: low (MVD 9-18; 20 patients), medium (MVD 19-31; 20 patients), and high (MVD 32-86; 22 patients). A high MVD was more frequent in well-differentiated adenocarcinomas compared with moderately and poorly differentiated tumors (p = 0.04), but there was no statistically significant association between MVD and T stage, or patients' age or sex. Multivariate analysis, including MVD, T stage, and histologic grade, showed that MVD was a significant independent prognostic factor in carcinomas of the gallbladder (p = 0.001, t ratio 3.3). It is believed that the assessment of intratumoral angiogenesis in patients with operable gallbladder carcinomas may be useful in predicting prognosis and, perhaps, in decision making for postoperative adjuvant treatment
