    Wave loads and stability of new foundation structure for offshore wind turbines made of Ocean Brick System (OBS)

    The Ocean Brick System (OBS) is a modular system consisting of hollow concrete precast blocs (10m x 10m x 10m) piled up like cubes and interconnected to create a stiff, light and strong structure which can be used for artificial islands, artificial reefs, elevation of vulnerable low lands, deep water ports, breakwaters and foundation of offshore wind turbines. The paper focuses on the experimental results on the wave loading and the stability of the OBS used as a foundation of the support structure of offshore wind turbines. Diagrams for the prediction of total horizontal forces, vertical forces and overturning moments induced by irregular waves on the OB-structure are derived and verified through additional stability tests and stability analysis

    Socioeconomic differences in adolescents’ smoking: a comparison between Finland and Beijing, China

    Background: Various studies have demonstrated the associations between socioeconomic status (SES) and health and health behaviour among adolescents. However, few studies have compared the socioeconomic difference in adolescent smoking between countries with different stage of smoking. The purpose of this study was to examine and compare the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and adolescent smoking in Beijing, China and Finland through the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study. Methods: The data used in this study were derived from the Chinese HBSC linked project survey 2008 in Beijing and the Finnish HBSC survey 2006. The final sample included 2005 Chinese and 1685 Finnish 15-year-old schoolchildren. The associations between Family Affluence Scale (FAS), as the SES measure, and adolescents’ smoking behaviour, including ever smoked, weekly smoking and the early onset of smoking were examined separately in two countries through binary logistic regression. Results: Compared to students from the high FAS group, Chinese boys from the low FAS group were more likely to report having ever smoked (OR = 2.12, 95 % CI = 1.49–3.01) and being early onset of smoking (OR = 2.17, 95 % CI = 1. 44–3.26). Finnish girls from the low FAS group were more likely to report being weekly smokers (OR = 1.68, 95 % CI = 1. 07–2.65). No significant difference was found for Chinese girls and Finnish boys. Conclusions: This study indicated different patterns of socioeconomic difference in smoking between Chinese and Finnish adolescents by gender and by smoking behaviour, which suggests that socioeconomic inequalities in smoking are different among adolescents in countries with different stage of smoking. Country specific policies and interventions for different target groups should be encouraged and designed for reducing the prevalence of adolescents’ smoking.peerReviewe

    Neurochemical Architecture of the Central Complex Related to Its Function in the Control of Grasshopper Acoustic Communication

    The central complex selects and coordinates the species- and situation-specific song production in acoustically communicating grasshoppers. Control of sound production is mediated by several neurotransmitters and modulators, their receptors and intracellular signaling pathways. It has previously been shown that muscarinic cholinergic excitation in the central complex promotes sound production whereas both GABA and nitric oxide/cyclic GMP signaling suppress its performance. The present immunocytochemical and pharmacological study investigates the question whether GABA and nitric oxide mediate inhibition of sound production independently. Muscarinic ACh receptors are expressed by columnar output neurons of the central complex that innervate the lower division of the central body and terminate in the lateral accessory lobes. GABAergic tangential neurons that innervate the lower division of the central body arborize in close proximity of columnar neurons and thus may directly inhibit these central complex output neurons. A subset of these GABAergic tangential neurons accumulates cyclic GMP following the release of nitric oxide from neurites in the upper division of the central body. While sound production stimulated by muscarine injection into the central complex is suppressed by co-application of sodium nitroprusside, picrotoxin-stimulated singing was not affected by co-application of this nitric oxide donor, indicating that nitric oxide mediated inhibition requires functional GABA signaling. Hence, grasshopper sound production is controlled by processing of information in the lower division of the central body which is subject to modulation by nitric oxide released from neurons in the upper division

    Integrating ontology into PLM-tools to improve sustainable product development

    Sustainability aspects are predominantly considered outside engineering departments by designated organizational units. Some PLM-vendors have already integrated application modules to assess, primarily environmental, sustainability within design environments by giving feedback to engineers but only on predefined options. This paper describes how to combine engineering tools with ontology to enable the identification of multiple viable options covering the functional dimension and all three sustainability dimensions. The approach reduces time consuming trial and error assessment processes and opens up alternative options for sustainable solutions.
