Control mechanisms for a nonlinear model of international relations
Some issues of control in complex dynamical systems are considered. The authors discuss two control mechanisms, namely: a short range, reactive control based on the chaos control idea and a long-term strategic control based on an optimal control algorithm. They apply these control ideas to simple examples in a discrete nonlinear model of a multi-nation arms race
Universal behaviour of entrainment due to coherent structures in turbulent shear flow
I suggest a solution to a persistent mystery in the physics of turbulent
shear flows: cumulus clouds rise to towering heights, practically without
entraining the ambient medium, while apparently similar turbulent jets in
general lose their identity within a small distance through entrainment and
mixing. From dynamical systems computations on a model chaotic vortical flow, I
show that entrainment and mixing due to coherent structures depend sensitively
on the relative speeds of different portions of the flow. A small change in
these speeds, effected for example by heating, drastically alters the sizes of
the KAM tori and the chaotic mixing region. The entrainment rate and, hence,
the lifetime of a turbulent shear flow, shows a universal, non-monotone

EQ-5D in Central and Eastern Europe : 2000-2015
Objective: Cost per quality-adjusted life year data are required for reimbursement decisions in many Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries. EQ-5D is by far the most commonly used instrument to generate utility values in CEE. This study aims to systematically review the literature on EQ-5D from eight CEE countries. Methods: An electronic database search was performed up to July 1, 2015 to identify original EQ-5D studies from the countries of interest. We analysed the use of EQ-5D with respect to clinical areas, methodological rigor, population norms and value sets. Results: We identified 143 studies providing 152 country-specific results with a total sample size of 81,619: Austria (n=11), Bulgaria (n=6), Czech Republic (n=18), Hungary (n=47), Poland (n=51), Romania (n=2), Slovakia (n=3) and Slovenia (n=14). Cardiovascular (20%), neurologic (16%), musculoskeletal (15%) and endocrine/nutritional/metabolic diseases (14%) were the most frequently studied clinical areas. Overall 112 (78%) of the studies reported EQ VAS results and 86 (60%) EQ-5D index scores, of which 27 (31%) did not specify the applied tariff. Hungary, Poland and Slovenia have population norms. Poland and Slovenia also have a national value set. Conclusions: Increasing use of EQ-5D is observed throughout CEE. The spread of health technology assessment activities in countries seems to be reflected in the number of EQ-5D studies. However, improvement in informed use and methodological quality of reporting is needed. In jurisdictions where no national value set is available, in order to ensure comparability we recommend to apply the most frequently used UK tariff. Regional collaboration between CEE countries should be strengthened

Molecular and life-history effects of a natural toxin on herbivorous and non-target soil arthropods
Natural toxins, such as isothiocyanate (ITC), are harmful secondary metabolites produced by plants. Many natural toxins occur in commercial crops, yet their possible negative repercussions on especially non-target soil organisms are largely unknown. This study examined life-history and gene transcriptional responses to 2-phenylethyl ITC on two soil arthropod species: Folsomia candida and Protaphorura fimata. To that end the standardized ISO guideline for ecotoxicological tests and a microarray for F. candida were used. The dissipation of 2-phenylethyl ITC in natural soil was investigated using GC-MS/MS for quantification. Half-lives, tested at four concentration levels in natural soil, were on average 16Â h with biodegradation as the plausible main removal process. Regardless, toxic effects on reproduction were shown for F. candida and P. fimata, with EC50 values of around 11.5Â nmol/g soil illustrating the toxic character of this compound. Gene expression profiles revealed the importance of fatty acid metabolism at low exposure concentrations (EC10), which is associated with the lipophilic nature of 2-phenylethyl ITC. At higher concentrations (EC50) gene expression became more ubiquitous with over-expression of especially stress-related genes and sugar metabolism. The regulation of a gene encoding a precursor of follistatin, furthermore, implied the inhibition of reproduction and may be an important molecular target that can be linked to the observed adverse effect of life-history traits
