The influence of coal face mechanization on the properties of r.o.m. coal - size, ash, sulfur, and moisture contents, volatile matter and calorific values - were investigated at Cayirhan (Ankara). Representative samples were obtained from r.o.m. coal and channel samples from two seams of panel A03 of Cayirhan Underground Coal Mine and chemically and physically analyzed. In addition, samples from roof and floor rock layers, which were unavoidably mixed with r.o.m. coal during mining operations, were taken and analyzed. The results show that the amount of fines and the ash, sulfur, and moisture contents of r.o.m coal in mechanized panels of Cayirhan Underground Coal Mine have increased, while the calorific value has decreased

WOS: 000297712300001This study was carried out on Kivircik, Sakiz and Gokceada sheep bred at Marmara Livestock Research Institute. A total of 156 heads sheep from different age groups were used in the study. The relationships between Body Condition Scores (BCS) and Body Weights (BW) have been investigated in three different physiological periods such as breeding, lambing and weaning period of indigenous sheep breeds in Turkey. As a result of the analyses conducted, the relationship between body condition score and body weight were found to be BW = 28.716+6.962* BCS; BW = 39.977+6.771* BCS; BW = 33.444+7.074* BCS for the breeding, lambing and weaning periods respectively. Similarly, correlations (r) between them were found to be 0.817, 0.731, 0.746 respectively (P<0.01). The regression coefficients of BCS on BW were 6.962 kg, 6.771 kg, 7.074 kg at breeding, lambing, weaning respectively and also significant (P<0.01). The findings demonstrate that body condition score is a good indicator of changes in body weights in Kivircik, Sakiz and Gokceada indigenous sheep breeds and will assist sheep breeders with regard to the feeding program to be applied particularly before the breeding season

Report of a case with polymicrobial endocarditis related to multiresistant strains

We present a patient with polymicrobial endocarditis who had been operated on previously for a mycotic aneurysm and was seen at the cardiology clinic because of palpitations related to effort. A transesophageal echocardiogram revealed a 15-mm vegetation on his aortic valve. Staphylococcus epidermidis and Corynebacterium striatum were isolated from the blood cultures. Both strains were multiresistant (susceptible to 3 antibiotics at most) against chemotherapy in vitro. Microbiological eradication was not achieved from blood cultures even after applying antimicrobial therapy with effective antibiotics as determined with an antibiotic susceptibility test. For this reason, the patient underwent valve replacement. He was discharged from hospital in fairly good health. Copyright (C) 2002 S. Karger AG, Basel
