Distributed Edge Connectivity in Sublinear Time
We present the first sublinear-time algorithm for a distributed
message-passing network sto compute its edge connectivity exactly in
the CONGEST model, as long as there are no parallel edges. Our algorithm takes
time to compute and a
cut of cardinality with high probability, where and are the
number of nodes and the diameter of the network, respectively, and
hides polylogarithmic factors. This running time is sublinear in (i.e.
) whenever is. Previous sublinear-time
distributed algorithms can solve this problem either (i) exactly only when
[Thurimella PODC'95; Pritchard, Thurimella, ACM
Trans. Algorithms'11; Nanongkai, Su, DISC'14] or (ii) approximately [Ghaffari,
Kuhn, DISC'13; Nanongkai, Su, DISC'14].
To achieve this we develop and combine several new techniques. First, we
design the first distributed algorithm that can compute a -edge connectivity
certificate for any in time .
Second, we show that by combining the recent distributed expander decomposition
technique of [Chang, Pettie, Zhang, SODA'19] with techniques from the
sequential deterministic edge connectivity algorithm of [Kawarabayashi, Thorup,
STOC'15], we can decompose the network into a sublinear number of clusters with
small average diameter and without any mincut separating a cluster (except the
`trivial' ones). Finally, by extending the tree packing technique from [Karger
STOC'96], we can find the minimum cut in time proportional to the number of
components. As a byproduct of this technique, we obtain an -time
algorithm for computing exact minimum cut for weighted graphs.Comment: Accepted at 51st ACM Symposium on Theory of Computing (STOC 2019
Spectral Sparsification and Regret Minimization Beyond Matrix Multiplicative Updates
In this paper, we provide a novel construction of the linear-sized spectral
sparsifiers of Batson, Spielman and Srivastava [BSS14]. While previous
constructions required running time [BSS14, Zou12], our
sparsification routine can be implemented in almost-quadratic running time
.
The fundamental conceptual novelty of our work is the leveraging of a strong
connection between sparsification and a regret minimization problem over
density matrices. This connection was known to provide an interpretation of the
randomized sparsifiers of Spielman and Srivastava [SS11] via the application of
matrix multiplicative weight updates (MWU) [CHS11, Vis14]. In this paper, we
explain how matrix MWU naturally arises as an instance of the
Follow-the-Regularized-Leader framework and generalize this approach to yield a
larger class of updates. This new class allows us to accelerate the
construction of linear-sized spectral sparsifiers, and give novel insights on
the motivation behind Batson, Spielman and Srivastava [BSS14]
A Decisive Role of [18F] Fdg PET/CT for Diagnosis of Neoplastic Vascular Thrombosis: Report of A Case
The combined use of PET scan with CT and fluorodeoxyglucose ([18F]FDG) can modify, in selected oncologic patients, the clinical management and care. We report here the case of a 63-year old female who showed increase serum level of CEA 3 years following left colectomy for cancer. Ultrasound and CT (computed tomography) of the abdomen showed a single lesion in the segment II of the liver with portal thrombosis. [18F] FDG PET/CT revealed two lesions (the first area was histologically proven to be a colorectal carcinoma metastasis, the second one corresponded to the portal thrombosis). No antithrombotic drugs were administered and patient underwent chemotherapy for 4 courses (eloxatin plus 5-fluorouracil anf leucovorin). Liver resection was performed 2 weeks after the end of chemotherapy, and intraoperative ultrasound revealed a normal portal flow
Numerical Study of Carbon Nanofoam Targets for Laser-Driven Inertial Fusion Experiments
Porous materials have peculiar characteristics that are relevant for inertial confinement fusion (ICF). Among them, chemically produced foams are proved to be able to smooth the laser inhomogeneities and to increase the coupling of the laser with the target. Foams realized with other elements and techniques may prove useful as well for ICF applications. In this work, we explore the potential of a novel class of porous materials for ICF, namely, carbon nanofoams produced with the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique, by means of hydrodynamic numerical simulations. By comparison with a simulation of solid-density carbon, PLD nanofoams show a higher pressure at the shock front, which could make them potential good candidates as ablators for a capsule for direct-drive fusion
Genotype characterisation of Giardia duodenalis isolates from domestic and farm animals by SSU-rRNA gene sequencing
In order to investigate the genotypes of Giardia duodenalis from domestic and farm animals in Italy, 21 Giardia isolates, 17 from dogs, 1 from cat and 3 from dairy calves, were genetically characterised by SSU-rRNA gene sequencing. Among dogs, 76.5% of isolates showed the dog-specific genotypes (Assemblages C, D and C/D mixed Assemblage) and 23.5% exhibit potential zoonotic genotypes (Assemblage A and A/C mixed Assemblages). The cat isolate belonged to assemblage A, whereas the sequences among the isolates from calves were found to correspond to hoofed-livestock genotype, namely Assemblage E. These findings suggest that infection of humans by zoonotic genotypes from domestic animals could be of low epidemiological significance, although possible. The present study represents the first contribute to the knowledge of G. duodenalis genotypes in domestic and farm animals from Italy. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
Microbial and Physico-Chemical Characterization of Cold Smoked Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), a New Product of Fishery
The aim of this study was to investigate the microbial and physico-chemical characteristics of cold smoked sea bass (CSSB), a novel italian fish product. The microbiological analyses showed the presence of bacterial contamination from the raw material, the environment, and the production process. The microbial spoilage population was dominated by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) associated with Gram-negative fermenting bacteria, including Photobacterium phosphoreum and psychrotrophic Enterobacteriaceae. Brochotrix thermospacta and Aeromonas spp. were also present; in contrast, mould and yeast were not detected (<2 CFU/g). High levels (6-7 log CFU/g) of LAB and total bacteria count (TBC) were observed from day 45 of storage; however, their presence does not seem to have influenced the total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), which always remained below 35 mg N/100 g. Consequently, the product is acceptable until day 60 of storage, considering that the malonaldehyde index (TBARS) was lower than 6.5 nmol/g. Pathogenic bacteria such as Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes were not detected. Currently, there is a growing demand for seafood due to its high quality and nutritional value. Cold smoked sea bass offers a source of macro- and micronutrients essential for the proper functioning of the human body. It is also rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids. The WHO and FAO evaluated the benefits and risks and concluded that there is convincing evidence of health benefits from fish consumption, such as a reduction in the risk of heart failure and improved neurodevelopment in infants and young children when fish is consumed by the mother before and during pregnancy. The CSSB analysed in this study demonstrated to have health benefits due to long-chain omega-3 PUFAs and other nutrients, such as proteins, minerals, and vitamin D, which are sometimes difficult to obtain from other sources. The results show that CSSB has a high nutritional value and excellent microbial quality

Heating cancer stem cells to reduce tumor relapse
Tumour relapse is believed to be caused by rare cancer-cells with stem-cell properties (cancer stem cells) that are intrinsically resistant to available treatments. The identification of novel strategies to increase their sensitivity has major clinical implications. Latest clinical trials have shown a positive antitumoral effect of hyperthermia in combination with chemotherapy or radiotherapy. In a recent paper, the combination of increased temperature at the tumour site, generated by laser treatment of intravenously-injected gold nanoshells, and ionizing radiations enhances radiosensitivity of cancer stem cells and tumor response. At the root of the success of hyperthermia in enhancing radio-sensitization of cancer stem cells is the inhibition of their capacity to repair DNA damage, affecting the survival rate of these cells
