Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer-related death for women worldwide. Breast self-examination (BSE) is an essential, low-cost, and simple tool for detecting breast cancer early. Employing the idea of ‘charity begins at home’ by involving student nurses in teaching BSE to relatives will improve early detection. Aim: To assess nursing students’ practice and willingness to teach BSE to their relatives. Setting: A college of nursing and midwifery in one state under North-Central Nigeria. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive design was employed. Through incidental sampling technique 197 respondents were selected from the first to the third year. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential analyses, with a p-value of 0.05 were conducted. Results: Respondents indicated where they learned about BSE. There were 98.5% respondents who had heard about BSE, and 89.8% of them had good practice of BSE. However, a quarter did not teach BSE to relatives. There were no statistically significant associations noted. Conclusion: Most of the nursing students were aware of BSE and knew how to perform it, although a quarter did not teach BSE to their relatives. Therefore, it may be necessary to sensitise nurses to cultivate the habit of teaching BSE to relatives and women in the community. Contribution: It is crucial to provide nurses with the skills and knowledge required to carry out BSE effectively, as well as teach women how to perform it on themselves, to improve breast cancer detection rates in Nigeria

ABSTRACT A 56-day feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effect of feeding varying levels of cooked pigeon pea seed meal (PSM) on the performance and carcass characteristics of growing rabbits. Twenty-four, 7-week old hybrid (Chinchilla x New Zealand white) rabbits weighing 950 -1050g were randomly divided into four groups of 6 rabbits each. Each group was randomly assigned to one of the diets containing 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% cooked PSM, respectively. Results revealed that rabbits fed 20% cooked PSM diet had significantly (P<0.05) higher protein intake, ether extract digestibility values, average daily weight gain, protein efficiency ratio, and lower feed conversion ratio than rabbits fed 10% and 30% cooked PSM diets. Rabbits fed 10% cooked PSM diet had significantly (P<0.05) lower dry matter, crude protein and nitrogen -free extract digestibility values than rabbits fed 0%, 20% and 30% cooked PSM diets. Rabbits fed 10%, 20% and 30% cooked PSM diet had significantly (P<0.05) higher dressed carcass percentage and relative liver weight than those fed the control diet. The results showed that up to 30% of cooked PSM can included in the diets of growing rabbits without any adverse effect on performance

Helicobacter pylori is a helical shaped gram negative microaerophilic bacterium, that can inhabit various areas of the stomach. The study was carried out to determine the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection among dyspeptic patients attending Endoscopy unit, Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH). The prevalence of H pylori; antibodies in plasma and antigen in stool samples of 80 patients examined was studied using ELISA (DIA PRO, Italy) and ICA (BIOTEST China) respectively. Sociodemographic and clinical information was obtained through the assistance of attending  gastroenterology staff. Blood grouping was also performed by slide  agglutination test for all patients. Helicobacter pylori IgG antibodies were detected in plasma of 28 (35%) patients of which 27 patients out of the sero-positive cases were antigen positive while Helicobacter pylori antigen was detected in the stool of 31 (38.8%) patients of which 27 patients out of the antigen positive cases were also seropositve. No significant association was found between Helicobacter pylori and age, sex, ABO blood group,  economic status, source of water and consumption of alcohol. Thus,  Helicobacter pylori seropositivity with respect to blood groups was found to be 32.6%, 46.7%, 33.3% and 33.3% in blood groups O, B, A and AB  respectively, while Helicobacter pylori stool antigen test positive results was found to be 33.3%, 33.3%, 46% and 39.5% in blood groups O, B, A and AB respectively. Hence, no statistical association was found between   Helicobacter pylori infection and blood groups of the patients (P>0.05). However, marital status was significantly associated with Helicobacter pylori antibody test (P<0.05). There is need for government to encourage people about the Helicobacter pylori screening test since it is one of the etiologic agent of ulcer. Keywords: Helicobacter pylori, Jos, Peptic ulcer, Prevalence

ABSTRACT The effects of processed castor oil bean (Ricinus communis L) meal (CBM) and supplementary DL-methionine on nutrient retention, carcass and organ weights of broiler chicks were investigated for five weeks. Two hundred and sixteen 7-day old broiler chicks (Anak strain) were randomly divided into 12 treatment groups of 18 birds each in a 4 x 3 factorial arrangement involving four processed CBM levels (0,10,15 and 20%) and three DL -methionine levels (0, 0.25 and 0.5%). During week 5 of the experiment, the apparent retention of the proximate components and the organs weights of birds were evaluated. Results showed that chicks on treatments 10-12 had lower (P<0.05) retention of DM, nitrogen, EE and NFE and lower (P<0.05) body weight, liver, kidney, spleen, heart and empty gizzard weights than birds on other treatments. Result showed that 10% and15% processed CBM can be included in the diet of broiler chicks without and with DL-methionine supplementation, respectively to enhance nutrient retention and for normal organ development of broiler chicks
