Tilted boxes on inclined planes
We propose the study of a box placed on an inclined plane, with an initial tilt with respect to the plane. This is a paradigmatic example of the role played by friction as a link between translational and rotational motion. This example has two advantages over the usual example of a sphere (or cylinder) rolling down an inclined plane. First, it provides a good model for a much greater variety of "real-life" situations. Second, it exhibits a much richer structure in parameter space, even when the box starts from rest. (C) 2000 American Association of Physics Teachers
Intoxicação do Sistema Nervoso Central Durante a Implantação de um Cardioversor Desfibrilhador Implantável -- Um Caso Clínico e Revisão da Literatura
Lidocaine, a local anesthetic, is commonly used in various medical procedures. Despite its widespread use, most physicians are not familiar with the life threatening presentation of lidocaine toxicity and its treatment. Our case demonstrates successful management of local lidocaine-induced systemic toxicity in a 53-year-old female during insertion of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator. Our goal was to raise awareness of the risks and symptoms of local anesthetic toxicity, educate regarding the site of administration and dose of anesthetic delivery as independent risk factors for systemic toxicity and highlight the use of intravenous lipid emulsion as an antidote.A lidocaína é um anestético local vulgarmente usado em vários procedimentos médicos. Apesar do seu uso abrangente, a maioria dos clínicos não está familiarizada com os sinais e sintomas de toxicidade e o seu tratamento. O nosso caso demonstra o tratamento bem-sucedido de uma intoxicação sistémica de lidocaína numa mulher de 53 anos durante a implantação de um cardioversor desfibrilhador implantável (CDI). Estacionalidade na atividade sexual e qualidade do sêmen nos ovinos deslanados das raças Santa Inês e Somalis brasileira.
Resumo: Em dez ovinos deslanados das racas Santa Ines e Somalis brasileira, sendo cinco de cada, foi coletado e ejaculado espermatico, atraves da vagina artificial, durante um ano. O objetivo foi avaliar a atividade sexual do macho ovino, nas condicoes do Nordeste brasileiro, no periodo seco (agosto a dezembro de 1983) e chuvoso (janeiro a maio de 1984) e as diferencas entre racas. Na avaliacao do esperma houve uma diferenca (P<0,001) entre racas, a Santa Ines mostrando maior volume e concentracao do que a Somalis brasileira. Nao se obtiveram diferencas quanto a porcentagem de espermatozoides vivos e motilidade progressiva. Na epoca seca, o volume e a concentracao foram menores que na epoca chuvosa (P<0,001). Porem a porcentagem de espermatozoides vivos e a motilidade nao apresentaram diferencas quanto as epocas. A patologia espermatica nao foi diferente quanto as racas e epocas, mostrando niveis relativamente altos para alcancar uma taxa de fertilidade. As racas Santa Ines e Somalis brasileira se mostraram perfeitamente adaptadas as condicoes climaticas e nutricionais do Nordeste brasileiro, quanto a sua atividade sexual.bitstream/item/36444/1/BP-08.pd
Validation of the cognitive stimulation therapy (CST) program for people with dementia in Portugal
BACKGROUND: Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) is considered a gold-standard, evidence-based and cost-effective approach to improve cognitive function and quality of life of people with mild to moderate dementia. AIMS: To validate CST for the Portuguese population and test its effectiveness. METHODS: A single-blind, multi-center, randomized controlled trial recruited 112 older people with dementia. The primary outcome measure was cognition and secondary measures were quality of life, communication, autonomy, anxiety, depression, and global functioning. We also explored whether CST benefits people differently according to context, gender and level of cognitive reserve. RESULTS: Fifty-five people were randomized to the intervention and 57 to the control group. In the post-test, the intervention group significantly improved relative to controls in cognition (ADAS-Cog, p = 0.013), communication (HCS, p = 0.045), behaviour (CAPE-BRS, p = 0.017) and in global dementia rating (CDR, p = 0.008). Quality of life, depression and anxiety had no significant differences. The estimated number needed to treat was four for one to benefit a cognitive improvement (ADAS-Cog). CONCLUSIONS: Group CST is valid for the Portuguese population with benefits for people with mild to moderate dementia
Non-hexagonal-ring defects and structures induced by strain in graphene and in functionalized graphene
We perform {\textit ab initio} calculations for the strain-induced formation
of non-hexagonal-ring defects in graphene, graphane (planar CH), and graphenol
(planar COH). We find that the simplest of such topological defects, the
Stone-Wales defect, acts as a seed for strain-induced dissociation and
multiplication of topological defects. Through the application of inhomogeneous
deformations to graphene, graphane and graphenol with initially small
concentrations of pentagonal and heptagonal rings, we obtain several novel
stable structures that possess, at the same time, large concentrations of
non-hexagonal rings (from fourfold to elevenfold) and small formation energies
