Topological wave functions and heat equations
We give a new, purely holomorphic description of the holomorphic anomaly equations of the topological string, clarifying their relation to the heat equation satisfied by the Jacobi theta series. In cases where the moduli space is a Hermitian symmetric tube domain G/K, we show that the general solution of the anomaly equations is a matrix element of the Schrodinger-Weil representation of a Heisenberg extension of G, between an arbitrary state . We argue that these results suggest the existence of a one-parameter generalization of the usual topological amplitude, transforming in the smallest unitary representation of the symmetry group G' that appears upon compactification of N=2 supergravity from four to three dimensions. We speculate on its relations to corrections to hypermultiplet couplings, nonabelian Donaldson-Thomas theory and black hole degeneracies

Higher Derivative Corrections, Dimensional Reduction and Ehlers Duality
Motivated by applications to black hole physics and duality, we study the
effect of higher derivative corrections on the dimensional reduction of
four-dimensional Einstein, Einstein Liouville and Einstein-Maxwell gravity to
one direction, as appropriate for stationary, spherically symmetric solutions.
We construct a field redefinition scheme such that the one-dimensional
Lagrangian is corrected only by powers of first derivatives of the fields,
eliminating spurious modes and providing a suitable starting point for
quantization. We show that the Ehlers symmetry, broken by the leading
corrections in Einstein-Liouville gravity, can be restored by including
contributions of Taub-NUT instantons. Finally, we give a preliminary discussion
of the duality between higher-derivative F-term corrections on the vector and
hypermultiplet branches in N=2 supergravity in four dimensions.Comment: 21 pages, uses JHEP3.cls; v3: minor corrections, final version

D-instantons and twistors: some exact results
We present some results on instanton corrections to the hypermultiplet moduli
space in Calabi-Yau compactifications of Type II string theories. Previously,
using twistor methods, only a class of D-instantons (D2-instantons wrapping
A-cycles) was incorporated exactly and the rest was treated only linearly. We
go beyond the linear approximation and give a set of holomorphic functions
which, through a known procedure, capture the effect of D-instantons at all
orders. Moreover, we show that for a sector where all instanton charges have
vanishing symplectic invariant scalar product, the hypermultiplet metric can be
computed explicitly.Comment: 32 pages, 3 figures, uses JHEP3.cls; some changes in section 3.3.3;

Quantum Attractor Flows
Motivated by the interpretation of the Ooguri-Strominger-Vafa conjecture as a
holographic correspondence in the mini-superspace approximation, we study the
radial quantization of stationary, spherically symmetric black holes in four
dimensions. A key ingredient is the classical equivalence between the radial
evolution equation and geodesic motion of a fiducial particle on the moduli
space M^*_3 of the three-dimensional theory after reduction along the time
direction. In the case of N=2 supergravity, M^*_3 is a para-quaternionic-Kahler
manifold; in this case, we show that BPS black holes correspond to a particular
class of geodesics which lift holomorphically to the twistor space Z of M^*_3,
and identify Z as the BPS phase space. We give a natural quantization of the
BPS phase space in terms of the sheaf cohomology of Z, and compute the exact
wave function of a BPS black hole with fixed electric and magnetic charges in
this framework. We comment on the relation to the topological string amplitude,
extensions to N>2 supergravity theories, and applications to automorphic black
hole partition functions.Comment: 43 pages, 6 figures; v2: typos and references added; v3: published

Argyres-Seiberg duality and the Higgs branch
We demonstrate the agreement between the Higgs branches of two N=2 theories
proposed by Argyres and Seiberg to be S-dual, namely the SU(3) gauge theory
with six quarks, and the SU(2) gauge theory with one pair of quarks coupled to
the superconformal theory with E_6 flavor symmetry. In mathematical terms, we
demonstrate the equivalence between a hyperkaehler quotient of a linear space
and another hyperkaehler quotient involving the minimal nilpotent orbit of E_6,
modulo the identification of the twistor lines.Comment: 27 pages; v2: published versio
