Development of a polyethylene breathable packaging film with modified microcrystalline cellulose for fresh products
In this study, a material based on polyethylene (PE) and microcrystalline cellulose (MC) was developed as a breathable packaging film. Surface functionalization of MC with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) has been shown to be an efficient option to tailor their properties and increase opportunities for the application of MC on the reinforcement of polymers such as polyethylene (PE). The functionalization of MC with the mentioned silane derivative was achieved using a green method and later used in the development of composites with PE in three percentages (1, 3, and 5%). All the materials were prepared by melt blending and characterized in terms of structural properties (ATR-FTIR and FTIR in transmittance mode, EDX, and SEM), thermal properties (DSC and TGA), thermomechanical properties (DMA), contact angle measurements and permeability to water vapor. What else can be learned when coding? A configurative literature review of learning opportunities through computational thinking

Available from SAGE Publications via the DOI in this record. Underpinning the teaching of coding with Computational Thinking has proved relevant for diverse learners, particularly given the increasing demand in upskilling for today’s labour market. While literature on computing education is vast, it remains unexplored how existing CT conceptualisations relate to the learning opportunities needed for a meaningful application of coding in non-Computer Scientists’ lives and careers. In order to identify and organise the learning opportunities in the literature about CT, we conducted a configurative literature review of studies published on Web of Science, between 2006 and 2021. Our sample gathers 34 papers and was analysed on NVivo to find key themes. We were able to organise framings of CT and related learning opportunities into three dimensions: functional, collaborative, and critical and creative. These dimensions make visible learning opportunities that range from individual cognitive development to interdisciplinary working with others, and to active participation in a technologically evolving society. By comparing and contrasting frameworks, we identify and explain different perspectives on skills. The effect of through-thickness compressive stress on mode II interlaminar crack propagation:A computational micromechanics approach
A micromechanics framework for modelling the mode II interlaminar crack onset and propagation in fibre-reinforced composites is presented with the aim of i) modelling the micro-scale failure mechanisms that underlie interlaminar crack propagation, and ii) determining the effect of the through-thickness pressure on mode II fracture toughness. An algorithm for the generation of the fibre distribution is proposed for the generation of three-dimensional Representative Volume Elements (RVEs). Appropriate constitutive models are used to model the different dissipative effects that occur at crack propagation. Numerical predictions are compared with experiments obtained in previous investigations: it is concluded that the proposed micromechanical model is able to simulate conveniently the interlaminar crack propagation and to take into account the effect of the through-thickness pressure on mode II interlaminar fracture toughness
Financial incentives for open source development: the case of Blockchain
Unlike traditional open-source projects, developers of open-source blockchain-based projects can reap large financial rewards thanks to a modern form of seigniorage. I consider a developer working on an open-source blockchain-based software that can be used only in conjunction with a specific crypto-token. This token is first sold to investors via an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) and then traded on a frictionless financial market. In all equilibria of the game, in each post-ICO period there is a positive probability that the developer sells all of his tokens on the market and, as a consequence, no development occurs

Digital media in primary schools: literacy or technology? Analyzing government and media discourses
This article examines the political and the media discourses concerning the
Portuguese governmental program responsible for delivering a laptop named
“Magalhães” to all primary school children. The analysis is based on the
official documents related to the launch and development of the initiative as
well as the press coverage of this topic. The main purpose is to recognize
the dominant public discourses and to find out what the media select for
the debate in the public sphere. This analysis was done with a particular
focus on the critical media literacy framework. The results reveal that the
press highlighted the negative aspects of that program and that this framing
could have a strong impact on how it was accepted and understood by the
public opinion. Analysis also reveals that the governmental initiative was
predominantly driven by technological objectives, in particular the access to
