    STRUCTURAL ADJUSTMENT AND AGRICULTURAL EXPORT RESPONSE IN LATIN AMERICA

    Expanding exports has been one of the principal goals of structural adjustment programs aimed at restoring external balance of payments equilibria in many developing countries. This paper analyzes the changing responsiveness of agricultural exports to price and exchange rate variation for selected crops in eight Latin American countries over the period 1961-1990. The results show that: (1) commodity and country disaggregation in estimation generates much higher export response elasticities than previously estimated; (2) real exchange rate changes dominate price changes in stimulating export response; and (3) statistical tests confirm structural change in export response elasticities in over half of the equations estimated. Overall, the evidence suggests that price and exchange rate changes accompanying stabilization and adjustment reforms have had significant though non-uniform effects in stimulating agricultural export expansion in Latin America.International Relations/Trade,

    Faecal contamination of soil and tomatoes irrigated by sprinkler as well as surface and subsurface drip irrigation with treated domestic wastewater were compared in 2007 and 2008 at experimental sites in Crete and Italy. Wastewater was treated by Membrane Bio Reactor (MBR) technology, gravel filtration or UV-treatment before used for irrigation. Irrigation water, soil and tomato samples were collected during two cropping seasons and enumerated for the faecal indicator bacterium Escherichia coli and helminth eggs. The study found elevated levels of E. coli in irrigation water (mean: Italy 1753 cell forming unit (cfu) per 100 ml and Crete 488 cfu per 100 ml) and low concentrations of E. coli in soil (mean: Italy 95 cfu g(-1) and Crete 33 cfu g(-1)). Only two out of 84 tomato samples in Crete contained E. coli (mean: 2700 cfu g(-1)) while tomatoes from Italy were free of E. coli. No helminth eggs were found in the irrigation water or on the tomatoes from Crete. Two tomato samples out of 36 from Italy were contaminated by helminth eggs (mean: 0.18 eggs g(-1)) and had been irrigated with treated wastewater and tap water, respectively. Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis DNA fingerprints of E. coli collected during 2008 showed no identical pattern between water and soil isolates which indicates contribution from other environmental sources with E. coli, e.g. wildlife. A quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) model with Monte Carlo simulations adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO) found the use of tap water and treated wastewater to be associated with risks that exceed permissible limits as proposed by the WHO (1.0 × 10(-3) disease risk per person per year) for the accidental ingestion of irrigated soil by farmers (Crete: 0.67 pppy and Italy: 1.0 pppy). The QMRA found that the consumption of tomatoes in Italy was deemed to be safe while permissible limits were exceeded in Crete (1.0 pppy). Overall the quality of tomatoes was safe for human consumption since the disease risk found on Crete was based on only two contaminated tomato samples. It is a fundamental limitation of the WHO QMRA model that it is not based on actual pathogen numbers, but rather on numbers of E. coli converted to estimated pathogen numbers, since it is widely accepted that there is poor correlation between E. coli and viral and parasite pathogens.     The Effect of Feeding Strategy on Butanol Production by Clostridium beijerinckii NCIMB 8052 Using Glucose and Xylose

    We performed fed-batch fermentations of glucose and xylose mixtures producing butanol. Our aim was to develop a feeding strategy for coping with carbon catabolite repression (CCR) and sequential utilization problems as well as understanding the effect of feeding strategy on fermentation kinetics. Experimental results showed that fermenter 1 with only xylose as the initial carbon source could co-utilize sugars for all mixed sugar feeds. On the other hand, fermenter 2 with only glucose as the initial sugar showed sequential utilization. Xylose in fermenter 2 accumulated while glucose was present; it was only utilized after the glucose was completely exhausted. Besides the sugar utilization profile, the feeding strategy had an impact on the fermentation kinetics. Maximum specific growth rates were 0.68 h-1 and 0.94 h-1, for fermenter 1 and 2,respectively. Fermenter 1 produced 4.98 g/l butanol and yield was 0.28 g/g, while fermenter 2 produced 0.5 g/l butanol with a yield value of 0.05 g/g. Total sugar utilization was also higher for fermenter 1, 81 % and 46 % for fermenter 2. The feeding strategy we proposed showed that wild type Clostridium beijerinckii NCIMB 8052 can co-utilize glucose and xylose, and produce butanol. Our observation suggests that we can tackle sequential utilization problem and enhance fermentation process with the proposed feeding strategy without having to manipulate the strain.publishedVersio

    Response Surface Methodology for Understanding Glucose and Xylose Utilization by Clostridium beijerinckii NCIMB 8052

    We applied response surface methodology to understand the effect and extend of carbon catabolite repression (CCR) on growth of Clostridium beijerinckii NCIMB 8052 using xylose and glucose as representative lignocellulosic sugars. We performed batch growth experiments based on the central composite design with different concentrations of glucose and xylose, and estimated the respective growth rates as the response. Fitting the quadratic model with interaction coefficient to experimental data gave a good quality of fit (R-squared=0.939). We found that glucose is the most significant factor affecting the growth rate. Interaction between glucose and xylose is another highly significant factor. Response surface illustrated that increasing or decreasing both sugar concentrations at the same time results in a decreasing growth rate, and increasing either sugar concentration while decreasing the other sugar increases the growth rate. It is an important finding as it suggests that CCR can be not only from glucose on xylose but also from xylose on glucose. A transcriptional study will be necessary to understand the repression mechanism and to improve the utilization of sugars in mixed form, thus lignocellulosic fermentation processes.publishedVersio

    Influences of shading and fertilization on on-farm yields of cocoa in Ghana

    Article Purchased; Published online: 31 August 2016Most cocoa farms in Ghana are cultivated in complex agroforest systems, with plant growth and cocoa productivity being affected. The objective of this study was to investigate how shade trees affect cocoa yield, temperature and soil nutrients in low-input cocoa systems. Establishing plots on 24 farms in four locations (districts) in Ghana, we assessed the influence of varying canopy cover and fertilization on cocoa yields. Results showed no relationship between canopy cover and cocoa yields in the light crop season (February to August). For the main crop season (September to January), there was an interaction between shade and yields: Yields were higher on no-shade plots than on shaded plots in two districts, whilst there were no differences at the two other districts possibly due to differences in precipitation and soil nutrient status. On the other hand, there was a positive effect of increased canopy cover on yields within the shaded plots. Soil nutrient analyses revealed no significant differences between shaded and no-shade plots and adequate levels of N, K+, Fe2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+ were recorded. However, soil contents of P, C, Mg2+ and Ca2+ were below recommended values. Peak temperatures recorded in the cocoa canopies were above the recommended range for this species. Although shade trees had a slight modifying effect on peak temperatures, the magnitude appeared too small to have any practical effects

    Modeling the Growth of Clostridium beijerinckii NCIMB 8052 on Lignocellulosic Sugars

    To our knowledge, this is the first growth model of Clostridium beijerinckii NCIMB 8052 on glucose and xylose as representative lignocellulosic sugars, which considers the synergistic effects of sugars on the growth rate. We fitted models with different types of interactions between the substrates to the growth rate data obtained with varying sugar concentrations. Noncompetitive binary substrate growth model gave the best fit with the smallest mean standard errors (MSE), and sum of squares error (SSE), 0.0778 and 0.0071, respectively. Confidence intervals for the parameter estimates showed that the substrate affinity constant for xylose, KsX (g/l) had the largest uncertainty, while the maximum specific growth rate on xylose, µmaxX (h-1) had the smallest. The correlation matrix showed that the model parameters were highly correlated. Carbon cataboliterepression (CCR) effect on the growth rate was of the noncompetitive type. Validation with other sugar concentration values is necessary to evaluate the prediction capability of the proposed model. A transcriptional study will be beneficial to understand global gene regulation mechanisms as guidance for improving the efficiency of lignocellulosic fermentation processes.publishedVersio

    Ab initio vibrations in nonequilibrium nanowires

    We review recent results on electronic and thermal transport in two different quasi one-dimensional systems: Silicon nanowires (SiNW) and atomic gold chains. For SiNW's we compute the ballistic electronic and thermal transport properties on equal footing, allowing us to make quantitative predictions for the thermoelectric properties, while for the atomic gold chains we evaluate microscopically the damping of the vibrations, due to the coupling of the chain atoms to the modes in the bulk contacts.     Statistical M-Estimation and Consistency in Large Deformable Models for Image Warping

    The problem of defining appropriate distances between shapes or images and modeling the variability of natural images by group transformations is at the heart of modern image analysis. A current trend is the study of probabilistic and statistical aspects of deformation models, and the development of consistent statistical procedure for the estimation of template images. In this paper, we consider a set of images randomly warped from a mean template which has to be recovered. For this, we define an appropriate statistical parametric model to generate random diffeomorphic deformations in two-dimensions. Then, we focus on the problem of estimating the mean pattern when the images are observed with noise. This problem is challenging both from a theoretical and a practical point of view. M-estimation theory enables us to build an estimator defined as a minimizer of a well-tailored empirical criterion. We prove the convergence of this estimator and propose a gradient descent algorithm to compute this M-estimator in practice. Simulations of template extraction and an application to image clustering and classification are also provided
