Monte Carlo simulation of implant free InGaAs MOSFET
The performance potential of n-type implant free In0.25Ga0.75As MOSFETs with high-κ dielectric is investigated using ensemble Monte Carlo device simulations. The implant free MOSFET concept takes advantage of the high mobility in III-V materials to allow operation at very high speed and low power. A 100 nm gate length implant free In0.25Ga0.75As MOSFET with a layer structure derived from heterojunction transistors may deliver a drive current of 1800 A/m and transconductance up to 1342 mS/mm. This implant free transistor is then scaled in the both lateral and vertical dimensions to gate lengths of 70 and 50 nm. The scaled devices exhibit continuous improvement in the drive current up to 2600 A/m and 3259 A/m and transconductance of 2076 mS/mm and 3192 mS/mm, respectively. This demonstrates the excellent scaling potential of the implant free MOSFET concept
The mystery of the 'Kite' radio source in Abell 2626: insights from new Chandra observations
We present the results of a new Chandra study of the galaxy cluster A2626.
The radio emission of the cluster shows a complex system of four symmetric arcs
without known correlations with the X-ray emission. The mirror symmetry of the
radio arcs toward the center and the presence of two optical cores in the
central galaxy suggested that they may be created by pairs of precessing radio
jets powered by dual AGNs inside the cD galaxy. However, previous observations
failed to observe the second jetted AGN and the spectral trend due to radiative
age along the radio arcs, thus challenging this interpretation. The new Chandra
observation had several scientific objectives, including the search for the
second AGN that would support the jet precession model. We focus here on the
detailed study of the local properties of the thermal and non-thermal emission
in the proximity of the radio arcs, in order to get more insights into their
origin. We performed a standard data reduction of the Chandra dataset deriving
the radial profiles of temperature, density, pressure and cooling time of the
intra-cluster medium. We further analyzed the 2D distribution of the gas
temperature, discovering that the south-western junction of the radio arcs
surrounds the cool core of the cluster. We studied the X-ray SB and spectral
profiles across the junction, finding a cold front spatially coincident with
the radio arcs. This may suggest a connection between the sloshing of the
thermal gas and the nature of the radio filaments, raising new scenarios for
their origin. A possibility is that the radio arcs trace the projection of a
complex surface connecting the sites where electrons are most efficiently
reaccelerated by the turbulence that is generated by the gas sloshing. In this
case, diffuse emission embedded by the arcs and with extremely steep spectrum
should be most visible at very low radio frequencies.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures. Accepted for publication on A&
Covariant hamiltonian dynamics
We discuss the covariant formulation of the dynamics of particles with
abelian and non-abelian gauge charges in external fields. Using this
formulation we develop an algorithm for the construction of constants of
motion, which makes use of a generalization of the concept of Killing vectors
and tensors in differential geometry. We apply the formalism to the motion of
classical charges in abelian and non-abelian monopole fieldsComment: 15 pages, no figure
Large amplitude MHD waves upstream of the Jovian bow shock: Reinterpretation
Observations of large amplitude magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves upstream of the Jovian bow shock were previously interpreted as arising from a resonant electromagnetic ion beam instability. That interpretation was based on the conclusion that the observed fluctuations were predominantly right elliptically polarized in the solar wind rest frame. Because it was noted that the fluctuations are, in fact, left elliptically polarized, a reanalysis of the observations was necessary. Several mechanisms for producing left hand polarized MHD waves in the observed frequency range were investigated. Instabilities excited by protons appear unlikely to account for the observations. A resonant instability excited by relativistic electrons escaping from the Jovian magnetosphere is a likely source of free energy consistent with the observations. Evidence for the existence of such a population of electrons was found in both the Low Energy Charged Particle experiments and Cosmic Ray experiments on Voyager 2
Radiative corrections to the lattice gluon action for highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ) and the effect of such corrections on the static potential
We perform a perturbative calculation of the influence of dynamical HISQ
fermions on the perturbative improvement of the gluonic action in the same way
as we have previously done for asqtad fermions. We find the fermionic
contributions to the radiative corrections in the Luescher-Weisz gauge action
to be somewhat larger for HISQ fermions than for asqtad. Using one-loop
perturbation theory as a test, we estimate that omission of the fermion-induced
radiative corrections in dynamical asqtad simulations will give a measurable
effect. The one-loop result gives a systematic shift of about -0.6% in (r_1/a)
on the coarsest asqtad improved staggered ensembles. This is the correct sign
and magnitude to explain the scaling violations seen in Phi_B on dynamical
lattice ensembles.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. Minor corrections suggested by refere
Fluctuations of the number of participants and binary collisions in AA interactions at fixed centrality in the Glauber approach
In the framework of the classical Glauber approach, the analytical
expressions for the variance of the number of wounded nucleons and binary
collisions in AA interactions at a given centrality are presented. Along with
the optical approximation term, they contain additional contact terms arising
only in the case of nucleus-nucleus collisions. The magnitude of the additional
contributions, e.g., for PbPb collisions at SPS energies, is larger than the
contribution of the optical approximation at some values of the impact
parameter. The sum of the additional contributions is in good agreement with
the results of independent Monte Carlo simulations of this process. Due to
these additional terms, the variance of the total number of participants for
peripheral PbPb collisions and the variance of the number of collisions at all
values of the impact parameter exceed several multiples of the Poisson
variances. The correlator between the numbers of participants in colliding
nuclei at fixed centrality is also analytically calculated.Comment: updated version; as published by Phys. Rev.
Dynamics of Neural Networks with Continuous Attractors
We investigate the dynamics of continuous attractor neural networks (CANNs).
Due to the translational invariance of their neuronal interactions, CANNs can
hold a continuous family of stationary states. We systematically explore how
their neutral stability facilitates the tracking performance of a CANN, which
is believed to have wide applications in brain functions. We develop a
perturbative approach that utilizes the dominant movement of the network
stationary states in the state space. We quantify the distortions of the bump
shape during tracking, and study their effects on the tracking performance.
Results are obtained on the maximum speed for a moving stimulus to be
trackable, and the reaction time to catch up an abrupt change in stimulus.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures with 4 caption
Hard thermal effective actions in the Schwinger formulation
We derive the properties of hard thermal effective actions in gauge theories
from the point of view of Schwinger's proper time formulation. This analysis is
simplified by introducing a set of generalized energy and momenta which are
conserved and are non-local in general. These constants of motion, which embody
energy-momentum exchanges between the fields and the particles along their
trajectories, can be related to a class of gauge invariant or covariant
potentials in the hard thermal regime. We show that in this regime the
generalized energy, which is non-local in general, generates the relevant
non-local behavior of hard thermal effective actions which become local only in
the static limit.Comment: 6 pages, references added, version to appear in Physical Review
