    Does settlement plate material matter? The influence of substrate type on fouling community development

    Benthic community composition and ascidian abundance can differ dramatically between adjacent man-made and natural substrates. Although multiple factors, including light exposure, surface orientation, predation exposure, and habitat type, are known to contribute to these patterns, few studies have directly tested the influence of substrate identity on community development. We compared fouling communities on settlement plates composed of commonly occurring natural (granite) and artificial (concrete, high density polyethylene, and PVC) marine materials deployed from late May to mid November 2014 from a floating dock in Newcastle, NH. We sought to determine if observed patterns resulted from differential recruitment onto substrate materials or post-settlement survival and growth. To do this, half of the plates were cleaned during bi-weekly examinations, and half were left un-cleaned. Preliminary analyses indicate that community composition differs between substrate types. These results will help us understand how substrate features contribute to non-native species establishment and habitat dominance, and may inform decisions regarding material usage in marine construction. These findings also underline the importance of settlement substrate choice in scientific studies, as plate material may influence experimental conclusions

    Seed Mass and Morphology in Outcrossing and Selfing Species of Clarkia (Onagraceae): An SEM Study

    Seeds from three pairs of outcrossing-selfing sister taxa from the genus Clarkia (farewell-to-spring, Onagraceae)—Clarkia unguiculata, Clarkia exilis, Clarkia xantiana ssp. xantiana and ssp. parviflora, and Clarkia concinna ssp. concinna and ssp. automixa—were studied to assess the effects of contrasting mating systems on seed mass and seed morphology. For each outcrossing-selfing comparison, the seed mass of the selfing taxon was less than that of the outcrossing taxon. Seed mass typically differed significantly among populations within a taxon. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the seeds from all these taxa share several characteristics: a bullet to shield shape, a reticulate exotesta pattern, presence of crystals in the seed coat, and a seed coat that varies in thickness over the length of the seed. No morphological feature reliably distinguished seeds of outcrossing taxa from those of selfing taxa. The lack of morphological differences in conjunction with the consistent differences in seed mass between selfing and outcrossing seeds in these taxa supports the hypothesis that evolutionary forces have acted only on seed mass and not on seed morphology

    Microstructure and properties of single crystal BaTiO3 thin films synthesized by ion implantation-induced layer transfer

    Single crystal BaTiO3 thin films have been transferred onto Pt-coated and Si3N4-coated substrates by the ion implantation-induced layer transfer method using H+ and He+ ion coimplantation and subsequent annealing. The transferred BaTiO3 films are single crystalline with root mean square roughness of 17 nm. Polarized optical and piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) indicate that the BaTiO3 film domain structure closely resembles that of bulk tetragonal BaTiO3 and atomic force microscopy shows a 90degrees a-c domain structure with a tetragonal angle of 0.5degrees-0.6degrees. Micro-Raman spectroscopy indicates that the local mode intensity is degraded in implanted BaTiO3 but recovers during anneals above the Curie temperature. The piezoelectric coefficient, d(33), is estimated from PFM to be 80-100 pm/V and the coercive electric field (E-c) is 12-20 kV/cm, comparable to those in single crystal BaTiO3

    Determining the Dependence Structure of Multivariate Extremes

    In multivariate extreme value analysis, the nature of the extremal dependence between variables should be considered when selecting appropriate statistical models. Interest often lies with determining which subsets of variables can take their largest values simultaneously, while the others are of smaller order. Our approach to this problem exploits hidden regular variation properties on a collection of non-standard cones and provides a new set of indices that reveal aspects of the extremal dependence structure not available through existing measures of dependence. We derive theoretical properties of these indices, demonstrate their value through a series of examples, and develop methods of inference that also estimate the proportion of extremal mass associated with each cone. We apply the methods to UK river flows, estimating the probabilities of different subsets of sites being large simultaneously

    Global public health training in the UK: preparing for the future.

    BACKGROUND: Many major public health issues today are not confined by national boundaries. However, the global public health workforce appears unprepared to confront the challenges posed by globalization. We therefore sought to investigate whether the current UK public health training programme adequately prepares its graduates to operate in a globalized world. METHODS: We used mixed methods involving an online cross-sectional survey of UK public health trainees on the international content of the Faculty of Public Health's written examination, a qualitative review of the Faculty's 2007 training curriculum and a questionnaire survey of all training deaneries in the UK. RESULTS: We found that global health issues are not addressed by the current training curriculum or in the written examination despite trainee interest for this. Many of the deaneries were also unreceptive to international placements. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the recognized educational legitimacy of global health placements and the favourable UK policy context, the opportunities and international content of public health training remain limited. In order to retain its position as a leader in the field of public health, the UK needs to adapt its training programme to better reflect today's challenges

Continuous stage and discharge measurements and frequent water quality sampling have been used to determine pollutant concentrations and loads in the river.
