ats are efficient predators of night-flying insects (Whitaker 1993), particularly in urban, agricultural, and forested areas in South Dakota (Kiesow 2004). In South Dakota, 6 bat species are considered rare and presently monitored by the South Dakota Natural Heritage Program (SDNHP; South Dakota Natural Heritage Program 2002). Because bats serve a vital ecosystem function there is an increased need to conserve bats and their habitats. Hence, the objectives of this project were to determine bat species richness along the Missouri River in central South Dakota. We conducted surveys of bats using mist-nets and acoustic detection from early May to early October 2003- 2005. During this study, we documented the likely importance of riparian corridors to bats in the plains region and believe the Missouri River may serve as a migration corridor for many bat species

Electroluminescent Characteristics of DBPPV–ZnO Nanocomposite Polymer Light Emitting Devices

We have demonstrated that fabrication and characterization of nanocomposite polymer light emitting devices with metal Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles and 2,3-dibutoxy-1,4-poly(phenylenevinylene) (DBPPV). The current and luminance characteristics of devices with ZnO nanoparticles are much better than those of device with pure DBPPV. Optimized maximum luminance efficiencies of DBPPV–ZnO (3:1 wt%) before annealing (1.78 cd/A) and after annealing (2.45 cd/A) having a brightness 643 and 776 cd/m2at a current density of 36.16 and 31.67 mA/cm2are observed, respectively. Current density–voltage and brightness–voltage characteristics indicate that addition of ZnO nanoparticles can facilitate electrical injection and charge transport. Deposition and properties of plasma polymer films made from thiophenes

Thin plasma polymer films were deposited by plasma polymerisation of thiophene (C4H4S) and iodothiophene (C4H4Si) Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) was applied during film deposition to characterise the plasma at various energy input levels and various monomer partial pressures. The electrical direct current conductivity for films deposited at various preparation conditions were calculated based on current voltage relationships which were observed. The maximum conductivity of an undoped thiophene film was sigma ~ 1.3 X 10 (exp -6) omega (exp -1) cm (exp -1)
