Crossed product of a C*-algebra by a semigroup of endomorphisms generated by partial isometries
The paper presents a construction of the crossed product of a C*-algebra by a
semigroup of endomorphisms generated by partial isometries.Comment: 22 page
Shape transformations in rotating ferrofluid drops
Floating drops of magnetic fluid can be brought into rotation by applying a
rotating magnetic field. We report theoretical and experimental results on the
transition from a spheroid equilibrium shape to non-axissymmetrical three-axes
ellipsoids at certain values of the external field strength. The transitions
are continuous for small values of the magnetic susceptibility and show
hysteresis for larger ones. In the non-axissymmetric shape the rotational
motion of the drop consists of a vortical flow inside the drop combined with a
slow rotation of the shape. Nonlinear magnetization laws are crucial to obtain
quantitative agreement between theory and experiment.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Transient Cherenkov radiation from an inhomogeneous string excited by an ultrashort laser pulse at superluminal velocity
An optical response of one-dimensional string made of dipoles with a
periodically varying density excited by a spot of light moving along the string
at the superluminal (sub-luminal) velocity is theoretically studied. The
Cherenkov radiation in such system is rather unusual, possessing both transient
and resonant character. We show that under certain conditions, in addition to
the resonant Cherenkov peak another Doppler-like frequency appears in the
radiation spectrum. Both linear (small-signal) and nonlinear regimes as well as
different string topologies are considered.Comment: accepted to Phys. Rev.
Double beta decay of Ca
Ca, the lightest double beta decay candidate, is the only one simple
enough to be treated exactly in the nuclear shell model. Thus, the
half-life measurement, reported here, provides a unique test
of the nuclear physics involved in the matrix element calculation.
Enriched Ca sources of two different thicknesses have been exposed in a
time projection chamber, and yield T years, compatible with the shell
model calculations.Comment: 4 pages, LaTex, 3 figures imbedded, PRL forma
A single structured light beam as an atomic cloud splitter
We propose a scheme to split a cloud of cold non-interacting neutral atoms
based on their dipole interaction with a single structured light beam which
exhibits parabolic cylindrical symmetry. Using semiclassical numerical
simulations, we establish a direct relationship between the general properties
of the light beam and the relevant geometric and kinematic properties acquired
by the atomic cloud as its passes through the beam.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Zenith-Angular Characteristics of Particles in EASs with eV According to the Yakutsk Array Data
Particle lateral distributions were investigated in cosmic ray air showers
with energy eV registered at the Yakutsk array with
surface and underground scintillation detectors with ~GeV threshold during the period of continuous observations from
1986 to 2016. The analysis covers events with arrival direction zenith angles
within five intervals with step . Experimental values were compared to simulation results obtained with the
use of CORSIKA code within the framework of QGSJet01 hadron interaction model.
The whole dataset points at probable cosmic ray composition which is close to
protons.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures. Accepted for publication in Physics of Atomic
