Breakup of liquid filaments.
Whether a thin filament of liquid separates into two or more droplets or eventually condenses lengthwise to form a single larger drop depends on the liquid's density, viscosity, and surface tension and on the initial dimensions of the filament. Surface tension drives two competing processes, pinching-off and shortening, and the relative time scales of these, controlled by the balance between capillary and viscous forces, determine the final outcome. Here we provide experimental evidence for the conditions under which a liquid filament will break up into drops, in terms of a wide range of two dimensionless quantities: the aspect ratio of the filament and the Ohnesorge number. Filaments which do not break up into multiple droplets demand a high liquid viscosity or a small aspect ratio. This work was supported by EPSRC (RG53364 and RG55605
The effect of disorder on the wave propagation in one-dimensional periodic optical systems
The influence of disorder on the transmission through periodic waveguides is
studied. Using a canonical form of the transfer matrix we investigate
dependence of the Lyapunov exponent on the frequency and
magnitude of the disorder . It is shown that in the bulk of the bands
, while near the band edges it has the order . This dependence is illustrated by numerical simulations.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
Delayed surgical debridement in pediatric open fractures: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Purpose: Open fractures are considered orthopedic emergencies that are traditionally treated with surgical debridement within 6 h of injury to prevent infection. However, this proclaimed â6-h ruleâ is arbitrary and not based on rigorous scientific evidence. The aim of our study was to systematically review the literature that compares late (>6 h from the time of injury) to early (<6 h from the time of injury) surgical debridement of pediatric open fractures.
Methods: We searched several databases from 1946 to 2013 for any observational or experimental studies that evaluated late and early surgical debridement of pediatric open fractures. We performed a meta-analysis using a random effects model to pool odds ratios for a comparison of infection rates between children undergoing late versus early surgical debridement. We also investigated the infection rates in upper- and lower-limb pediatric open fractures. Descriptive, quantitative, and qualitative data were extracted.
Results: Of the 12 articles identified, three studies (retrospective cohort studies) were eligible for the meta-analysis, encompassing a total of 714 open fractures. The pooled odds ratio (OR = 0.79) for infection between late and early surgical debridement was in favor of late surgical debridement but was not statistically significant (95 % CI 0.32, 1.99; p = 0.38, I 2 = 0 %). No significant difference in infection rate was detected between pediatric open fractures in the upper and lower limbs according to the time threshold in the included studies (OR = 0.72, 95 % CI 0.29, 1.82; p = 0.40, I 2 = 0 %).
Conclusions: The cumulative evidence does not, at present, indicate an association between late surgical debridement and higher infection rates in pediatric open fractures. However, initial expedient surgical debridement of open fractures in children should always remain the rule. Thus, multi-center randomized controlled trials or prospective cohort studies will be able to answer this question with more certainty and a higher level of evidence
Theory of plasmon-enhanced high-harmonic generation in the vicinity of metal nanostructures in noble gases
We present a semiclassical model for plasmon-enhanced high-harmonic
generation (HHG) in the vicinity of metal nanostructures. We show that both the
inhomogeneity of the enhanced local fields and electron absorption by the metal
surface play an important role in the HHG process and lead to the generation of
even harmonics and to a significantly increased cutoff. For the examples of
silver-coated nanocones and bowtie antennas we predict that the required
intensity reduces by up to three orders of magnitudes and the HHG cutoff
increases by more than a factor of two. The study of the enhanced high-harmonic
generation is connected with a finite-element simulation of the electric field
enhancement due to the excitation of the plasmonic modes.Comment: 4 figure
Virtual Site as an aid to first-year learning
Courses run by the School of the Built Environment have a range of entry requirements that enable diverse students and those with lower academic qualifications to gain entry. This results in a particular challenge for the Documentation & Estimating module, which is a very practical, skillsand competence-based module. It is delivered to large tutorial cohorts of mixed courses, abilities, ages and experience. Many students need one-toone guidance to understand what, practically, they have to do. They are given the theory first in a lecture and then have practical tutorials to carry out assessed exercises with limited tutor contact time. The module includes some basic surveying techniques and a levelling exercise which involves the transfer of a level from an assumed benchmark to establish a temporary benchmark some distance away. Many students have problems with computation of results. In spite of a careful introduction and explanation of the use of the instruments and techniques, many students find it difficult to visualise what is happening
Association between vitamin d deficiencies in sarcoidosis with disease activity, course of disease and stages of lung involvements
Background: Despite negative association between 25-hydroxy vitamin D and incidence of many chronic respiratory diseases, this feature was not well studied in sarcoidosis. Current study investigated the association between 25-hydroxy vitamin D deficiency with sarcoidosis chronicity, disease activity, extra-pulmonary skin manifestations, urine calcium level and pulmonary function status in Iranian sarcoidosis patients. Results of this study along with future studies, will supply more effective programs for sarcoidosis treatment. Methods: Eighty sarcoidosis patients in two groups of insufficient serum level and sufficient serum level of 25-hydroxy vitamin D were studied. Course of sarcoidosis was defined as acute and chronic sarcoidosis. Pulmonary function test (PFT) was assessed by spirometry. Skin involvements were defined as biopsy proven skin sarcoidosis. 24-hour urine calcium level was used to specify the disease activity. Stages of lung involvements were obtained by CT-scan and chest X-ray. The statistical analyses were evaluated using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. Results: A significant negative correlation was obtained between vitamin D deficiency in sarcoidosis patients and disease chronic course and stages two to four of lung involvements. Considering other parameters of the disease and vitamin D deficiency, no significant correlation was detected. Conclusions: In conclusion, results of the current study implies in the role of vitamin 25(OH)D deficiencies in predicting the course of chronic sarcoidosis. Furthermore, it was concluded that vitamin 25(OH)D deficiency can direct pulmonary sarcoidosis toward stage 2â4 of lung involvements
Similarity between the primary and secondary air-assisted liquid jet breakup mechanism
we report an ultrafast synchrotron x-ray phase contrast imaging study of the
primary breakup mechanism of a coaxial air-assisted water jet. We demonstrate
that there exist great similarities in the phenomenology of primary breakup
with that of the secondary breakup. Especially, a membrane-mediated breakup
mechanism dominates the breakup process for a wide range of air speeds. This
finding reveals the intrinsic connections of these two breakup regimes and has
deep implications on the unified theoretical approach in treating the breakup
mechanism of high speed liquid jet.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
New approximations for the cone of copositive matrices and its dual
We provide convergent hierarchies for the cone C of copositive matrices and
its dual, the cone of completely positive matrices. In both cases the
corresponding hierarchy consists of nested spectrahedra and provide outer
(resp. inner) approximations for C (resp. for its dual), thus complementing
previous inner (resp. outer) approximations for C (for the dual). In
particular, both inner and outer approximations have a very simple
interpretation. Finally, extension to K-copositivity and K-complete positivity
for a closed convex cone K, is straightforward.Comment: 8
