    Ethnobotany, diverse food uses, claimed health benefits and implications on conservation of barley landraces in North Eastern Ethiopia highlands

    Background: Barley is the number one food crop in the highland parts of North Eastern Ethiopia produced by subsistence farmers grown as landraces. Information on the ethnobotany, food utilization and maintenance of barley landraces is valuable to design and plan germplasm conservation strategies as well as to improve food utilization of barley.Methods: A study, involving field visits and household interviews, was conducted in three administrative zones. Eleven districts from the three zones, five kebeles in each district and five households from each kebele were visited to gather information on the ethnobotany, the utilization of barley and how barley end-uses influence the maintenance of landrace diversity.Results: According to farmers, barley is the "king of crops" and it is put for diverse uses with more than 20 types of barley dishes and beverages reportedly prepared in the study area. The products are prepared from either boiled/roasted whole grain, raw- and roasted-milled grain, or cracked grain as main, side, ceremonial, and recuperating dishes. The various barley traditional foods have perceived qualities and health benefits by the farmers. Fifteen diverse barley landraces were reported by farmers, and the ethnobotany of the landraces reflects key quantitative and qualitative traits. Some landraces that are preferred for their culinary qualities are being marginalized due to moisture shortage and soil degradation.Conclusions: Farmers' preference of different landraces for various end-use qualities is one of the important factors that affect the decision process of landraces maintenance, which in turn affect genetic diversity. Further studies on improving maintenance of landraces, developing suitable varieties and improving the food utilization of barley including processing techniques could contribute to food security of the area

    Aksum University (AKU) faculties’ needs for support in training and academic research: a basis for improvement in productivity of publication

    The objective of this study is to identify and describe Aksum University (AKU) faculties’ training and support needs for academic research as a basis of improvement in the productivity of academic research publications. The stratified random sample was 51 faculties from five of the six colleges in Aksum University representing 16.3% of the oncampus teaching faculties. The hypotheses of the study were: (a) training in data analysis and research writing is needed; (b) faculties know how to do research design and methodology; (c) faculties need internet access; (d) research training does not impact teaching; and (e) there are no qualified faculties at AKU for research training. Two Principle Component Analysis factors related to these hypotheses were described as a training factor TFAC1(I need training in data analysis and research report writing ) and a support factor TFAC2 (Internet access is essential and research class would not interfere with teaching).Keywords: Training, Support, Research, Publications, Universit

    Relationships between Water Status, Leaf Chlorophyll Content and Photosynthetic Performance in Tempranillo Vineyards

    The aims of this work were (i) to study the relationships between leaf water potential, foliar chlorophyllcontent and photosynthetic performance of grapevines under field conditions, and (ii) to evaluate thefeasibility of chlorophyll fluorescence parameters to assess water status in commercial vineyards. Duringthree consecutive seasons (2011 to 2013), 20 non-irrigated “Tempranillo” vineyard subzones were monitoredin Ribera del Duero, Spain. Data on foliar chlorophyll content, midday and predawn leaf water potential,net assimilation and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were measured at fruit set, pre-véraison andvéraison. The results show that the water potential indicated weak to moderate stress in the study yearsand decreased along the vegetative cycle, while foliar chlorophyll contents showed an increasing trend. Thecorrelation between both variables was not consistent. Linear regression of the chlorophyll fluorescenceparameters in dark-adapted leaves, Fo, Fv and Fv/Fm, over chlorophyll content was strong in all thestudy years (higher determination coefficients for Fv/Fm at fruit set in 2012 and 2013). In general, thewater potential with low coefficients of variation showed a low effect on photosynthesis activity, althoughvalues in variables such as Fm, Fv, Fv/Fm, Fs/Fo and ΦPSII registered an increasing trend when middayleaf water potential decreased in the pre-véraison and véraison stages. These variables could be useful toestimate water status in commercial vineyards for application in precision viticulture

    Perspectives of Protocol Based Breaking Bad News among Medical Patients and Physicians in a Teaching Hospital, Ethiopia

    BACKGROUND፡ Discussing potentially bad outcomes is a standard communication task in clinical care. Physicians’ awareness on ways to communicate bad news is considered low. SPIKES protocol is the most popular strategy used by physicians, but its practice and patients' perception are not known. This study attempted to fill the knowledge gap on protocol implementation, patient preference and physician effects.METHODS: Hospital-based descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at SPHMMC from May 1 to June 30 using structured interviews administered to patients and physicians. Three hundred and sixty patients and 111 physicians were included. Assessment of SPIKES performance, patient satisfaction, patient preference, and physician awareness, attitude and effects were studied.RESULTS: Performance of SPIKES protocol was setting (74.5%), perception (51.1%), invitation (56.3%), knowledge (15.9%), emotion (22.3%) and summary (10.1%). Only 30.6% of the patients were entirely satisfied with the interaction, and 19.2% with knowledge attained. Patient satisfaction was associated with physician asking how much information they like (P=0.025). Patient desire and report showed variation. Eighty-two percent of the physicians were not aware of the protocol, and 83.8% had no training. Half of the physicians feel depressed after disclosure.CONCLUSIONS: Patient satisfaction with communication process and knowledge is poor, as is performance of SPIKES components. Satisfaction is related to being asked how much patients want to know. Patients’ desires on how to be told news is different from how it is done. Breaking bad news increases feeling of depression. Awareness and training on the protocol are deficient; medical schools should incorporate it into their studies and implement proper follow-up.&nbsp

    Food insecurity among people with severe mental disorder in a rural Ethiopian setting: a comparative, population-based study

    Aim. In low-income African countries, ensuring food security for all segments of the population is a high priority. Mental illness is associated consistently with poverty, but there is little evidence regarding the association with food insecurity. The aim of this study was to compare the levels of food insecurity in people with severe mental disorders (SMD) with the general population in a rural African setting with a high burden of food insecurity. Method. Households of 292 community-ascertained people with a specialist-confirmed diagnosis of SMD (including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder) were compared with 284 households without a person with SMD in a rural district in south Ethiopia. At the time of the study, no mental health services were available within the district. Food insecurity was measured using a validated version of the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale. Disability was measured using the World Health Organisation Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0. Result. Severe household food insecurity was reported by 32.5% of people with SMD and 15.9% of respondents from comparison households: adjusted odds ratio 2.82 (95% confidence interval 1.62 to 4.91). Higher annual income was associated independently with lower odds of severe food insecurity. When total disability scores were added into the model, the association between SMD and food insecurity became non-significant, indicating a possible mediating role of disability. Conclusion. Efforts to alleviate food insecurity need to target people with SMD as a vulnerable group. Addressing the disabling effects of SMD would also be expected to reduce food insecurity. Access to mental health care integrated into primary care is being expanded in this district as part of the Programme for Improving Mental health carE (PRIME).     Agro-ecological niche of bacterial wilt (Xanthomonas campestris pv. musacearum) of enset (Ensete ventricosum (Welw.) Cheessman) in Gamo highlands of Ethiopia

    In Ethiopia, nearly 20 million people depend on Enset (Ensete ventricosum (Welw.) Cheessman) for food, animal feed and fibre. Most of its cultivation is concentrated in the South and South-Western parts of the country. Enset based farming system is common in the Gamo highlands, with 11, 150 ha currently covered by it. Enset is supplemented with the cultivation of cereals, pulses and other root and tuber crops. Diverse high yielding clones of different ages are available all year round and can withstand dry spells, making Enset the most important food security crop in these densely populated highlands. Despite its relevance, Enset remains very poorly studied. One of the most important problems is Bacterial Wilt disease caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. musacearum, destructive to Enset at all growth stages and present in all Enset growing areas of the country. As a plant takes up to 8 years to mature, an attack of Bacterial Wilt can leave a family vulnerable to famine for years. It is most likely spread by infected farm tools, harvesting knives, plant debris and repeated transplanting of corms. Adoption of the control package by farmers has been less effective and all known varieties are susceptible, putting a great challenge on controlling the epidemic. Despite being present in the entire Enset belt, the severity of a Bacterial Wilt infection varies greatly from region to region. Hence, this study aims at correlating the distribution and severity of the disease to environmental factors such as soil type, fertility, climate and altitude, and to the socio-economical status of the farm households. A better knowledge of the influence of these factors would help in developing more targeted measures to control the disease

    Multifaceted role of BTLA in the control of CD8+ T cell fate after antigen encounter

    Purpose: Adoptive T-cell therapy using autologous tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) has shown an overall clinical response rate 40%–50% in metastatic melanoma patients. BTLA (B-and-T lymphocyte associated) expression on transferred CD8+ TILs was associated with better clinical outcome. The suppressive function of the ITIM and ITSM motifs of BTLA is well described. Here, we sought to determine the functional characteristics of the CD8+BTLA+TIL subset and define the contribution of the Grb2 motif of BTLA in T-cell costimulation. Experimental Design: We determined the functional role and downstream signal of BTLA in both human CD8+ TILs and mouse CD8+ T cells. Functional assays were used including single-cell analysis, reverse-phase protein array (RPPA), antigen-specific vaccination models with adoptively transferred TCR-transgenic T cells as well as patient-derived xenograft (PDX) model using immunodeficient NOD-scid IL2Rgammanull (NSG) tumor-bearing mice treated with autologous TILs. Results: CD8+BTLA? TILs could not control tumor growth in vivo as well as their BTLA+ counterpart and antigen-specific CD8+BTLA? T cells had impaired recall response to a vaccine. However, CD8+BTLA+ TILs displayed improved survival following the killing of a tumor target and heightened “serial killing” capacity. Using mutants of BTLA signaling motifs, we uncovered a costimulatory function mediated by Grb2 through enhancing the secretion of IL-2 and the activation of Src after TCR stimulation. Conclusions: Our data portrays BTLA as a molecule with the singular ability to provide both costimulatory and coinhibitory signals to activated CD8+ T cells, resulting in extended survival, improved tumor control, and the development of a functional recall response.     Water productivity improvement of cereals and foods legumes in the Atbara Basin of Eritrea

    The project ‘Water Productivity Improvement of Cereals and Food Legumes in the Atbara Basin of Eritrea’ is an example of organization and implementation of farmers’ participatory research, conducted utilizing the available indigenous knowledge while empowering farming communities. Farmers have been partners in technology development with extension and research, with full decision-making power in planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation. The project produced, in partnership with farmers, new varieties of cereals and food legumes which have proven farmer acceptability; established seed systems which supply farmers with quality seed in a sustainable manner; enhanced farmers’ skills in participatory research and in community based seed production; strengthened the capacity of National Institutions to carry out participatory research and technology transfer, and strengthened linkages between research, seed, and extension departments by working together in cooperation with farmers and farmers’ communities. Working conditions, during the course of the project were not always easy and became challenging towards the end of the project, but to work with farmers and learn from them has been an extremely rewarding experience
