The photodisintegration of cosmic ray nuclei by solar photons: the Gerasimova-Zatsepin effect revisted

The interesting possibility of measuring the masses of high energy cosmic ray particles by observing pairs of extensive air showers arriving at the earth nearly simultaneously was proposed some years ago by Gerasimova and Zatsepin (1960). Such showers would be created by the nuclear fragments originating as a result of the photodisintegration of massive nuclei interacting with the solar radiation field. In this paper we re-visit this possibility in the context of existing and proposed detectors of high and ultra-high energy cosmic rays considering a simple, yet realistic, model of the interplanetary magnetic field. Frontispiece as a Representative of Emblematicity in the Encyclopedia by D. Diderot and J. D’Alembert

The research, which results are presented in the paper, coincides with current issues related to the scientific discourse space investigation and relates to the subject sphere of semiotics. The article analyzes the pragmatic significance of one of the circumtext elements of the 18th century French Encyclopedia – the frontispiece, meaningful for a potential reader to understand the reference book as a whole. It is proved that in the architectonic-pragmatic division of the work the frontispiece plays a significant role due to a strong pre-text position, fulfilling a prospective function in orienting the addressee. Being a part of this reference edition, the para-text element precedes the language component of the text, joins the word and shapes a semiotic unity. It is specified that the Encyclopedia comes across as a multimodal text, where scientific knowledge is coded by verbal and iconic text. The structural-semantic relations of the iconic and verbal components of the Encyclopedia as a multimodal text are described. Frontispiece being a visual component carries out a semasiological connection with a verbal sign, denoting related subject-matter associations. It is proved that the role of the frontispiece is to expand and deepen the content of the verbal component of the 18th century largest reference edition. The semantic relations between the frontispiece and the text are realized through a visualized symbolic image, which explicates their connection within the whole book

Study of highly defective titanium dioxide prepared via pulsed laser ablation

About some cases of "non-return" as a special form of emigration from the ussr during the period of "the cold war"

© Serials Publications.The relevance of the research problem is determined due to the need of further investigation of the history of protest activity in the USSR as a phenomenon characterizing the maturity level of any civil society, but, unfortunately, to this day still remaining insufficiently studied component of the Soviet political past. The article aims at exploring the phenomenon of "non-return" as a special kind of political emigration from the USSR during the period of "the cold war". The leading approach to the study of this problem was the hermeneutic interpretation, verification and interpretation of previously not introduced into scientific discourse documents and record keeping, deposited in RGANI (Russian state archive of contemporary history), and materials of Soviet legislation of the analyzed period. The main inferences of the study are the characteristics of these not enough studied forms of protest movement in the USSR, known as the "non-return" of ordinary Soviet citizens, and the activities of the Soviet secret police aimed at preventing it. It is proved that, despite the unofficial ban on travel and various penalties (up to capital punishment) against persons who attempted without permission to leave the country, nevertheless such cases as a special form of political protest took place. The methodology of coping with the specific documentary and narrative sources on the problem under consideration is proposed. The article can be useful for the teaching of political history of Russia, history of the Soviet punitive agencies, law, archival studies and source studies of Russian history, and historical anthropology and psychology
