Bayesian online learning for energy-aware resource orchestration in virtualized RANs
Proceedings of: IEEE International Conference on Computer Communications, 10-13 May 2021, Vancouver, BC, Canada.Radio Access Network Virtualization (vRAN) will spearhead the quest towards supple radio stacks that adapt to heterogeneous infrastructure: from energy-constrained platforms deploying cells-on-wheels (e.g., drones) or battery-powered cells to green edge clouds. We perform an in-depth experimental analysis of the energy consumption of virtualized Base Stations (vBSs) and render two conclusions: (i) characterizing performance and power consumption is intricate as it depends on human behavior such as network load or user mobility; and (ii) there are many control policies and some of them have non-linear and monotonic relations with power and throughput. Driven by our experimental insights, we argue that machine learning holds the key for vBS control. We formulate two problems and two algorithms: (i) BP-vRAN, which uses Bayesian online learning to balance performance and energy consumption, and (ii) SBP-vRAN, which augments our Bayesian optimization approach with safe controls that maximize performance while respecting hard power constraints. We show that our approaches are data-efficient and have provably performance, which is paramount for carrier-grade vRANs. We demonstrate the convergence and flexibility of our approach and assess its performance using an experimental prototype. This work was supported by the European Commission through Grant No. 856709 (5Growth) and Grant No. 101017109 (DAEMON); and by SFI through Grant No. SFI 17/CDA/4760
Resonant CP Violation in Higgs Radiation at e^+e^- Linear Collider
We study resonant CP violation in the Higgsstrahlung process e^+e^- ->
H_{1,2,3} (Z -> e^+e^-, \mu^+\mu^-) and subsequent decays H_{1,2,3} -> b
\bar{b}, \tau^-\tau^+, in the MSSM with Higgs-sector CP violation induced by
radiative corrections. At a high-energy e^+e^- linear collider, the recoil-mass
method enables one to determine the invariant mass of a fermion pair produced
by Higgs decays with a precision as good as 1 GeV. Assuming an integrated
luminosity of 100/fb, we show that the production lineshape of a coupled system
of neutral Higgs bosons decaying into b\bar{b} quarks is sensitive to the
CP-violating parameters. When the Higgs bosons decay into \tau^-\tau^+, two CP
asymmetries can be defined using the longitudinal and transverse polarizations
of the tau leptons. Taking into account the constraints from electric dipole
moments, we find that these CP asymmetries can be as large as 80 %, in a
tri-mixing scenario where all three neutral Higgs states of the MSSM are nearly
degenerate and mix significantly.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Demo: vrAIn proof-of-concept: a deep learning approach for virtualized RAN resource control
Proceeding of: 25th Annual International Conference on Mobile Computing and Networking (MobiCom'19), October 21-25, 2019, Los Cabos, Mexico. While the application of the NFV paradigm into the network is proceeding full steam ahead, there is still one last milestone to be achieved in this context: the virtualization of the radio access network (vRAN). Due to the very complex dependency between the radio conditions and the computing resources needed to provide the baseband processing functionality, attaining an efficient resource control is particularly challenging. In this demonstration, we will showcase vrAIn, a vRAN dynamic resource controller that employs deep reinforcement learning to perform resource assignment decisions. vrAIn, which is implemented using an open-source LTE stack over a Linux platform, can achieve substantial savings in the used CPU resources while maintaining the target QoS for the attached terminals and maximizing throughput when there is a deficit of computational capacity. The work of University Carlos III of Madrid was supported by H2020 5G-MoNArch project (grant agreement no. 761445) and H2020 5G-TOURS project (grant agreement no. 856950). vrAIn: Deep Learning based Orchestration for Computing and Radio Resources in vRANs
In Press / En PrensaThe virtualization of radio access networks (vRAN) is the last milestone in the NFV revolution. However, the complexrelationship between computing and radio dynamics make vRAN resource control particularly daunting. We present vrAIn, a resourceorchestrator for vRANs based on deep reinforcement learning. First, we use an autoencoder to project high-dimensional context data(traffic and channel quality patterns) into a latent representation. Then, we use a deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithmbased on an actor-critic neural network structure and a classifier to map contexts into resource control decisions. We have evaluated vrAIn experimentally, using an open-source LTE stack over different platforms, and via simulations over aproduction RAN. Our results show that: (i) vrAIn provides savings in computing capacity of up to 30% over CPU-agnostic methods;(ii) it improves the probability of meeting QoS targets by 25% over static policies; (iii) upon computing capacity under-provisioning,vrAIn improves throughput by 25% over state-of-the-art schemes; and (iv) it performs close to an optimal offline oracle. To ourknowledge, this is the first work that thoroughly studies the computational behavior of vRANs and the first approach to a model-freesolution that does not need to assume any particular platform or context. This work was partially supported by the European Commission through Grant No. 856709 (5Growth) and Grant No. 856950 (5G-TOURS); by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) through Grant No. 17/CDA/4760; and AEI/FEDER through project AIM under Grant No. TEC2016-76465-C2-1-R. Differential transcription profiles inAedes aegyptidetoxification genes after temephos selection
The mosquito Aedes aegypti is the main vector of Dengue and Yellow Fever flaviviruses. The organophosphate insecticide temephos is a larvicide that is used globally to control Ae. aegypti populations; many of which have in turn evolved resistance. Target site alteration in the acetylcholine esterase of this species has not being identified. Instead, we tracked changes in transcription of metabolic detoxification genes using the Ae. aegypti ‘Detox Chip’ microarray during five generations of temephos selection. We selected for temephos resistance in three replicates in each of six collections, five from Mexico, and one from Peru. The response to selection was tracked in terms of lethal concentrations. Uniform upregulation was seen in the epsilon class glutathione-S-transferase (eGST) genes in strains from Mexico prior to laboratory selection, while eGSTs in the Iquitos Peru strain became upregulated after five generations of temephos selection. While expression of many carboxyl/cholinesterase esterase (CCE) genes increased with selection, no single esterase was consistently upregulated and this same pattern was noted in the cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (CYP) genes and in other genes involved in reduction or oxidation of xenobiotics. Bioassays using glutathione-S-transferase (GST), CCE and CYP inhibitors suggest that various CCEs instead of GSTs are the main metabolic mechanism conferring resistance to temephos. We show that temephos-selected strains show no cross resistance to permethrin and that genes associated with temephos selection are largely independent of those selected with permethrin in a previous study
Precise determination of the Wtb couplings at LHC
Top pair production at LHC is the ideal place to search for nonstandard Wtb
couplings in t -> W b -> l nu b decays. The lb forward-backward asymmetry in
the W rest frame is very sensitive to sigma_{mu nu} couplings, and can spot
one-loop QCD corrections to the decay vertex with more than 5 sigma statistical
significance. We discuss the potential of this asymmetry to signal nonstandard
gamma_mu and sigma_{mu nu} couplings and compare with top-antitop spin
correlation asymmetries, which have a lower sensitivity. We also briefly
summarise the results for Tevatron.Comment: LaTeX, 12 pages, 2 PS figures. One reference added. To be published

Sodium and Potassium Consumption in a Semi-Urban Area in Peru: Evaluation of a Population-Based 24-Hour Urine Collection.
Despite the negative effects of high sodium and low potassium consumption on cardiovascular health, their consumption has not been quantified in sites undergoing urbanization. We aimed to determine the sodium and potassium consumption in a semi-urban area in Peru with a cross-sectional study. 24-h urine samples were collected. The outcomes were mean consumption of sodium and potassium, as well as adherence to their consumption recommendation: <2 g/day and ≥3.51 g/day, respectively. Bivariate analyses were conducted to identify socio-economic and clinical variables associated with the consumption recommendations of 602 participants, complete urine samples were found in 409: mean age of participants was 45.7 (standard deviation (SD): 16.2) years and 56% were women. The mean sodium and potassium consumption was 4.4 (SD: 2.1) and 2.0 (SD: 1.2) g/day. The sodium and potassium recommendation was met by 7.1% and 13.7% of the study sample; none of the participants met both recommendations. People not adherent to the sodium recommendation had higher diastolic (73.1 mmHg vs. 68.2 mmHg, p = 0.015) and systolic (113.1 mmHg vs. 106.3 mmHg, p = 0.047) blood pressure than those who comply with the recommendation. Public health actions ought to be implemented in areas undergoing urbanization to improve sodium and potassium consumption at the population level
A Search for Extraplanar Dust in Nearby Edge-On Spirals
We present high resolution BV images of 12 edge-on spiral galaxies observed
with the WIYN 3.5-m telescope. These images were obtained to search for
extraplanar (|z| > 0.4 kpc) absorbing dust structures similar to those
previously found in NGC 891 (Howk & Savage 1997). Our imaged galaxies include a
sample of seven massive L_*-like spiral galaxies within D<25 Mpc that have
inclinations i > 87 deg from the plane of the sky. We find that five of these
seven systems show extraplanar dust, visible as highly-structured absorbing
clouds against the background stellar light of the galaxies. The more prominent
structures are estimated to have associated gas masses >10^5 M_sun; the implied
potential energies are > 10^(52) ergs. All of the galaxies in our sample that
show detectable halpha emission at large z also show extraplanar dust
structures. None of those galaxies for which extraplanar halpha searches were
negative show evidence for extensive high-z dust. The existence of extraplanar
dust is a common property of massive spiral galaxies. We discuss several
mechanisms for shaping the observed dust features, emphasizing the possibility
that these dusty clouds represent the dense phase of a multiphase medium at
high-z in spiral galaxies. The correlation between high-z dust and extraplanar
Halpha emission may simply suggest that both trace the high-z interstellar
medium in its various forms (or phases), the existence of which may ultimately
be driven by vigorous star formation in the underlying disk. (Abstract

Academic Directors Facing Internet Addictions, Learning and Health Promotion
The result that is presented is expressed from a bibliographic review of works published during the last two years 2020-2022 and, through which it was possible to verify the relationships that are established between the work of the Academic Directors, before the latent challenge and visible that is the crossroads of Internet addictions, by university students, increased in the stage already overcome of social isolation imposed by Covid 19 but, with emphasis on the achievement of learning at this high educational level, its risks and consequent decreases in the attacks that occur as a result of procrastination. All associated with the addictive phenomenon, in a projection of health promotion that the current, humanistic, modern and developing university should not give up in any way, being precisely in this direction an unavoidable pillar of social development, which lies precisely in the high professional qualification. of the new generations committed to a prosperous and sustainable social change
Factorial Equivalence of the Social Skills Scale in the Lambayeque University Context According to Sex
This study aimed to show whether the theoretical model of the social skills construct, proposed by Gismero (2000), is invariant in male and female samples of Peruvian university students from Lambayeque. In order to meet the proposed objective, a non-experimental, cross-sectional, comparative psychometric design by hierarchical confirmatory procedures was chosen. Two samples of university students were used, one of 1,084 female students and the other of 1,043 male students. Both groups were applied the self-report of social skills (EHS). With the data obtained, a confirmatory factor analysis of the first-order factor structure of the social skills construct was performed in each group, based on the polychoric correlation matrix. The invariance of the scale according to sex was evaluated on the basis of the second-order factor structure, by means of multigroup confirmatory factor analysis of nested models. No significant differences in the fit to the data were found between the two-factor second-order factor structure and the alternative one-factor model. Consecutive tests of configurational invariance, disturbance, and first- and second-order metrics gave evidence, respectively, that the model structure, second-order factor errors, and first- and second-order loadings are equivalent in the two study samples. With the data from the study, it is concluded that the structure of the EHS scale is invariant to the sex variable in the Lambayeque context
