A New Redshift Interpretation
A nonhomogeneous universe with vacuum energy, but without spacetime
expansion, is utilized together with gravitational and Doppler redshifts as the
basis for proposing a new interpretation of the Hubble relation and the 2.7K

Self-gravitating spheres of anisotropic fluid in geodesic flow
The fluid models mentioned in the title are classified. All characteristics
of the fluid are expressed through a master potential, satisfying an ordinary
second order differential equation. Different constraints are imposed on this
core of relations, finding new solutions and deriving the classical results for
perfect fluids and dust as particular cases. Many uncharged and charged
anisotropic solutions, all conformally flat and some uniform density solutions
are found. A number of solutions with linear equation among the two pressures
are derived, including the case of vanishing tangential pressure.Comment: 21 page
On cosmological observables in a swiss-cheese universe
Photon geodesics are calculated in a swiss-cheese model, where the cheese is
made of the usual Friedmann-Robertson-Walker solution and the holes are
constructed from a Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi solution of Einstein's equations. The
observables on which we focus are the changes in the redshift, in the
angular-diameter--distance relation, in the luminosity-distance--redshift
relation, and in the corresponding distance modulus. We find that redshift
effects are suppressed when the hole is small because of a compensation effect
acting on the scale of half a hole resulting from the special case of spherical
symmetry. However, we find interesting effects in the calculation of the
angular distance: strong evolution of the inhomogeneities (as in the approach
to caustic formation) causes the photon path to deviate from that of the FRW
case. Therefore, the inhomogeneities are able to partly mimic the effects of a
dark-energy component. Our results also suggest that the nonlinear effects of
caustic formation in cold dark matter models may lead to interesting effects on

Definition of the stimulated emission threshold in high- nanoscale lasers through phase-space reconstruction
Nanoscale lasers sustain few optical modes so that the fraction of
spontaneous emission funnelled into the useful (lasing) mode is high
(of the order of few 10) and the threshold, which traditionally
corresponds to an abrupt kink in the light in- light out curve, becomes
ill-defined. We propose an alternative definition of the threshold, based on
the dynamical response of the laser, which is valid even for lasers.
The laser dynamics is analyzed through a reconstruction of its phase-space
trajectory for pulsed excitation. Crossing the threshold brings about a change
in the shape of the trajectory and in the area contained in it. An unambiguous
definition of the threshold in terms of this change is shown theoretically and
illustrated experimentally in a photonic crystal laser
Gravitational collapse in asymptotically Anti-de Sitter/de Sitter backgrounds
We study here the gravitational collapse of a matter cloud with a
non-vanishing tangential pressure in the presence of a non-zero cosmological
term. Conditions for bounce and singularity formation are derived for the
model. It is also shown that when the tangential pressures vanish, the bounce
and singularity conditions reduce to that of the dust case studied earlier. The
collapsing interior is matched with an exterior which is asymptotically de
Sitter or anti de Sitter, depending on the sign of cosmological constant. The
junction conditions for matching the cloud to exterior are specified. The
effect of the cosmological term on apparent horizons is studied in some detail,
and the nature of central singularity is analyzed. We also discuss here the
visibility of the singularity and implications for the cosmic censorship
