Was Jonathan Harker Wearing a Red Hood?

    Get PDF
An icon of Gothic literature and forerunner of vampire lore, Dracula is credited as being inspired by Stoker’s nightmare after eating a particularly rich crab dinner. It’s also evident that he was influenced by other British invasion tales, LeFanu’s tale “Carmilla,” and The Woman in White. However, no work is evident as of yet about the possibility of Dracula being influenced by fairy tales, specifically “Little Red Riding Hood” in structure, themes, and characters. This essay will be considering Dracula’s background, why Stoker wrote it and its Victorian influences. Then I will examine Bettelheim’s fairy tale structure as it applies to Dracula; how the themes of both pieces compare, and lastly, compare the characters between the two pieces. Using both primary texts and other researchers who have approached these two novels utilizing a socio-historical aspect, I will synthesize and prove how “Little Red Riding Hood” was a forerunner and influence to Dracula. This will be the first of its kind and potentially start a new scholarly conversation for Dracula

A HYPHENATED CAREER: SUSTAINABLE PATHWAYS FOR DANCERS

    Get PDF
Despite the rich cultural and artistic contributions of dancers, there exists a pressing need to comprehensively address the challenges and complexities surrounding the sustainability of careers in dance due to underemployment, underpayment, data undercounting and physical strain. This dissertation research aims to understand occupational trajectories that build a sustainable career for dancers. Through a historical examination of the professionalization of dance and an investigation of current career opportunities, this study investigates the growing support systems for dancers, the influence of occupational identity, and the workplace environments needed to sustain a dance career. Occupational identity theory, motivation-hygiene theory, and transaction cost theory are utilized to examine a dancer’s reasoning for selecting a career in dance and the skills and support systems needed to sustain this profession. A convergent mixed methods design was utilized combining qualitative research through a national dance sector survey, and qualitative research through document analysis of equitable contracting documents created by the Association of Performing Arts Professionals (APAP), Creating New Futures, and Dance/USA. By accessing data from multiple sources, this mixed methods approach illuminates the evolution of the dance industry, how dancers identify themselves, the reasoning behind their career choices, and the effects on the sustainability of a dancer\u27s career. Achieving sustainability in a dance career requires a multi-hyphenate approach that extends beyond traditional performance roles. The survey results emphasize the prevalence of dancers engaging in hyphenated careers, with a majority holding multiple occupations inside and outside of the dance sector. While dance performer (dancer) remains the primary identity for many dancers, pursuing secondary incomes, particularly in dance education, is suggested to be crucial for financial stability. The evolving terrain of contracting practices, influenced by national working groups for equitable contracts, demonstrate increased transparency and fair compensation for all labor performed throughout the creative process. Beyond financial considerations, this research found that holistic sustainability necessitates supportive work environments, ongoing education, and resources prioritizing a dancer’s well-being

    Improved Signal Performance for Smartphones

    Get PDF
The research project “Improved Signal Performance for Smartphones” involves collecting and analyzing data from a smartphone’s available connections and making the information available in a simple application interface. Due to the data collection/analysis and iOS system framework, several ethical and professional issues will be encountered ranging from individual privacy to company standards/guidelines. These conflicts are addressed, and solutions are provided, along with researching into similar situations that others have reported. By making comparisons between this project and similar approaches, professional and ethical areas of concern can be addressed early into development, or completely avoided. The research project course was properly setup to provide a time frame, due dates, and guidelines for implementing each stage of the project. Project goals are explored in detail. All required components for the project implementation are listed, along with their functionality and availability for use. The final product was a program that accurately derived various characteristic from connections and displayed this data in tables and graphs for consumers to make use of

Phase noise analysis and basic measuring techniques

    Get PDF
Oscillators are important elements of RF and microwave communications systems. The increased use of the electromagnetic spectrum requires the use of better and cleaner oscillators. Local oscillators in RF to IF converters play a big role in the overall performance of the receiver systems because phase noise in the local oscillator can drastically reduce the signal to noise ratio at the output of the receiver, especially if the converter is at the front end. Phase noise is the parameter used to describe oscillator stability. The analysis and basic measurement techniques of phase noise are performed in this report. This research report starts with a description of the ideal oscillator output in both time and frequency domains. Phase noise is then described in the time, frequency, and spectral density domains. The ÂŁ(f) definition of phase noise is also included, and an example showing the measurement of phase noise. Finally, an introduction to three different measurement techniques is given

A Brief Survey of the Equilibrium and Transport Properties of Critical Fluids and the Degree to Which Microgravity is Required for Their Experimental Investigation

The modern theory of second order phase transitions is very successful in calculating the critical exponents as an asymptotic expansion in powers of epsilon = 4 - D, the deviation of D = 3, the spatial dimension of the actual physical system from that of the abstract four-dimensional reference model. This remarkable mathematical 'tour de force' leaves unanswered, however, many fundamental questions concerning the exact nature of how the fluctuations interact. I discuss here some experiments which would help to further our understanding of the equilibrium critical properties. Especially promising would be a measurement of the temperature dependence of the turbidity very close to the critical point. This has the promise of determining the small and elusive but fundamentally important anomalous dimension exponent eta. I also review various ways of measuring the critical transport coefficients and point out some cases where ground based experiments may usefully supplement flight experiments
