Testing Helioseismic-Holography Inversions for Supergranular Flows Using Synthetic Data
Supergranulation is one of the most visible length scales of solar convection
and has been studied extensively by local helioseismology. We use synthetic
data computed with the Seismic Propagation through Active Regions and
Convection (SPARC) code to test regularized-least squares (RLS) inversions of
helioseismic holography measurements for a supergranulation-like flow. The code
simulates the acoustic wavefield by solving the linearized three-dimensional
Euler equations in Cartesian geometry. We model a single supergranulation cell
with a simple, axisymmetric, mass-conserving flow.
The use of simulated data provides an opportunity for direct evaluation of
the accuracy of measurement and inversion techniques. The RLS technique applied
to helioseismic-holography measurements is generally successful in reproducing
the structure of the horizontal flow field of the model supergranule cell. The
errors are significant in horizontal-flow inversions near the top and bottom of
the computational domain as well as in vertical-flow inversions throughout the
domain. We show that the errors in the vertical velocity are due largely to

Might we be Calling Problems Seen in Autism Spectrum Conditions: âPoor Theory of Mind,â when Actually they are Related to Non-Generalised âObject Permanenceâ?
Autism spectrum conditions (ASC) and the delayed development of object permanence is often not questioned, and is rarely understood. The following paper attempts to explore this idea and suggests reasons for why such development is delayed and the possibility that certain difficult behaviours seen in children with ASC are less likely to be connected to having poor theory of mind and more connected to lacking generalized concepts of object permanence
Problems with Object Permanence: Rethinking Traditional Beliefs Associated with Poor Theory of Mind in Autism
Poor Theory of Mind (ToM) (or difficulties imputing mental states to self and others) [1], (See also [2-5]) is often blamed for certain responses and behaviour in autism. However, the Theory of Mind Task Battery requires an understanding of language, the use of cognitive skills, as well as the childâs motivation and attention to complete. All of these factors are either weak or under-developed in individuals with autism suggesting that this is not the best means to measure oneâs understanding that other people have their own thoughts, plans, beliefs, or point of view. Behaviours like strong defiance, insistence on sameness, fear associated with sudden change and severe anxiety may be related to difficulties seeing beyond the ânowâ [6]. This paper suggests that some of the stress and anxiety in the autism population may actually be due to delayed object permanence (OP) (knowing something may still exist even if it is out of sight), which can appear as poor ToM. Academic motherhood and fieldwork: Juggling time, emotions and competing demands
The idea and practice of going âinto the fieldâ to conduct research and gather data is a deeply rooted aspect of Geography as a discipline. For global North Development Geographers, amongst others, this usually entails travelling to, and spending periods of time in, often far-flung parts of the global South. Forging a successful academic career as a Development Geographer in the UK, is therefore to some extent predicated on mobility. This paper aims to critically engage with the gendered aspects of this expected mobility, focusing on the challenges and time constraints that are apparent when conducting overseas fieldwork as a mother, unaccompanied by her children. The paper emphasises the emotion work that is entailed in balancing the competing demands of overseas fieldwork and mothering, and begins to think through the implications of these challenges in terms of the types of knowledge we produce, as well as in relation to gender equality within the academy
SAP Regulates TH2 Differentiation and PKC-θ-Mediated Activation of NF-κB1
AbstractXLP is caused by mutations affecting SAP, an adaptor that recruits Fyn to SLAM family receptors. SAP-deficient mice recapitulate features of XLP, including increased T cell activation and decreased humoral responses post-infection. SAP-deficient T cells also show increased TCR-induced IFN-γ and decreased TH2 cytokine production. We demonstrate that the defect in IL-4 secretion in SAP-deficient T cells is independent of increased IFN-γ production. SAP-deficient cells respond normally to polarizing cytokines, yet show impaired TCR-mediated induction of GATA-3 and IL-4. Examination of TCR signaling revealed normal Ca2+ mobilization and ERK activation in SAP-deficient cells, but decreased PKC-θ recruitment, Bcl-10 phosphorylation, IκB-ι degradation, and nuclear NF-κB1/p50 levels. Similar defects were observed in Fyn-deficient cells. SLAM engagement amplified PKC-θ recruitment in wt but not SAP- or Fyn-deficient cells, arguing that a SAP/Fyn-mediated pathway enhances PKC-θ/NF-κB1 activation and suggesting a role for this pathway in TH2 regulation
Animal-borne tags provide insights into the acoustic communication of southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) on the calving grounds

Additional support was provided by Cetacean Society International and VIVA Baleias, golfinhos ecia.This study investigated the repertoire, call-type variability and call rates of southern right whales on a calving ground off Brazil in the western South Atlantic. Acoustic tag data were collected from four lactating females and one juvenile. Pulsive, hybrid, and upcalls showed the greatest variability among call-types with up to 23% of non-standard forms detected. Quiet sounds (grunt, single, and double pulse) were detected for the first time in this species on the calving grounds. Although the sample size was limited, results suggest that social interaction increased call-type diversity and call rates, in line with other acoustic studies on right whales.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
More than monitoring: Developing impact measures for transformative social enterprise
Meeting the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 involves transformational change in the
business of business, and social enterprises can lead the way in such change. We studied Cultivate,
one such social enterprise in Christchurch, New Zealand, a city still recovering from the 2010/11
Canterbury earthquakes. Cultivate works with vulnerable youth to transform donated compost into
garden vegetables for local restaurants and businesses. Cultivateâs objectives align with SDG
concerns with poverty and hunger (1 & 2), social protection (3 & 4), and sustainable human
settlements (6 & 11). Like many grant-supported organisations, Cultivate is required to track and
measure its progress. Given the organisationâs holistic objectives, however, adequately accounting
for its impact reporting is not straightforward. Our action research project engaged Cultivate staff and
youth-workers to generate meaningful ways of measuring impact. Elaborating the Community
Economy Return on Investment tool (CEROI), we explore how participatory audit processes can
capture impacts on individuals, organisations, and the wider community in ways that extend capacities
to act collectively. We conclude that Cultivate and social enterprises like it offer insights regarding
how to align values and practices, commercial activity and wellbeing in ways that accrue to
individuals, organisations and the broader civic-community
Effects of Non-Aerobic Maximal Effort Exercise on Fatigue in Deconditioned Men and Women with Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative disease of unknown etiology affecting women more frequently than men. Mental and physical fatigue complaints are often the most disabling symptoms for an MS patient. Both are multifactorial, potentially exacerbated by aerobic exercise, may prevent sustained physical functioning, and significantly interfere with activities of daily living1. A multi-center study was designed to investigate the effects of non-aerobic maximal effort exercise (MEE) for deconditioned persons with MS, with the expectation of minimizing fatigue. The IsoPUMP (Neuromuscular Engineering; Nashville, TN), is a specialized exercise and strength-sensing machine, designed to allow individuals to safely perform and record their non-aerobic MEE sessions. The Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (MFIS) and Multiple Sclerosis Functional Composite (MSFC) are common, accepted methods used to measure fatigue and function. The MFIS is a 21-item questionnaire which assesses the subjectsâ perception of physical, cognitive, and psychosocial aspects of fatigue over a four-week period2. Each of the 21 items are scored on a scale from 0 (never) to 4 (almost always), and the total MFIS score is calculated by summing the circled number for each item. Total scores can range from 0 to 84; higher scores indicating a greater impact of fatigue on the person. The MFIS has three distinct subscales: (1) physical, (2) cognitive, and (3) psychosocial. These subscales can be scored independently by summing the questions that pertain to each subscale2. The MFIS physical subscale score can range from 0 â 36 and the MFIS cognitive subscale score can range from 0 â 40. The MSFC combines clinical measures used to assess lower limb function (Timed 25-Foot Walk [25-FW]), upper limb function (9-Hole Peg Test [9-HPT]), and cognition (Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test [PASAT-3â])3. The 25-FW is a quantitative measure of lower extremity function. The 9-HPT is a quantitative measure of arm and hand function where a subject inserts and then removes 9 pegs from a board, using one hand at a time. The time is recorded for each hand with the dominant hand trial first and the non-dominant hand trial second. The final score is recorded as the mean time for both hands. The PASAT-3â is a measure of cognitive function, specifically assessing auditory information processing speed, short-term memory, flexibility, and calculation ability. Cognitive dysfunction affects half of all MS patients; slowing ability to reason, concentrate, and recall5. In this test subjects listen to a series of 61 spoken numbers separated by 3 seconds and must add each number to the prior number. Their final PASAT-3â score is the number of correct additions in the series, with 60 reflecting a perfect score. The MSFC is then evaluated by creating Z-scores for each component, which compare each outcome with the average outcome of the study population. The three Z-scores are then averaged to create an overall composite score (the MSFC score) which represents change over time for that population of MS subjects3
