    Affordable passive 3D-printed prosthesis for persons with partial hand amputation

    Background and Aim: Partial hand amputations are common in developing countries and have a negative impact on patients and their families’ quality of life. The uniqueness of each partial hand amputation, coupled with the relatively high costs of prostheses, makes it challenging to provide suitable prosthetic solutions in developing countries. Current solutions often have long lead times and require a high level of expertise to produce. The aim of this study was to design and develop an affordable patient-specific partial hand prosthesis for developing countries. Technique: The prosthesis was designed for a patient with transmetacarpal amputation (i.e. three amputated fingers and partial palm). The final design was passive, controlled by the contralateral hand, and utilized the advanced flexibility properties of thermoplastic polyurethane in a glove-like design that costs approximately 20 USD to fabricate. Quantitative and qualitative tests were conducted to assess performance of the device after the patient used the final design. A qualitative assessment was performed to gather the patient’s feedback following a series of tests of grasp taxonomy. A quantitative assessment was performed through a grasp and lift test to measure the prosthesis’ maximum load capacity. Discussion: This study showed that the prosthesis enhanced the patient’s manual handling capabilities, mainly in the form of grasp stability. The prosthesis was light weight and could be donned and doffed by the patient independently. Limitations include the need to use the contralateral hand to achieve grasping and low grasp strength. Clinical relevance: Persons with partial hand amputation in developing countries lack access to affordable functional prostheses, hindering their ability to participate in the community. 3D-printed prostheses can provide a low-cost solution that is adaptable to different amputation configurations

    A broadband pulsed radio frequency electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometer for biological applications

    A time-domain radio frequency (rf) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrometer/imager (EPRI) capable of detecting and imaging free radicals in biological objects is described. The magnetic field was 10 mT which corresponds to a resonance frequency of 300 MHz for paramagnetic species. Short pulses of 20-70 ns from the signal generator, with rise times of less than 4 ns, were generated using high speed gates, which after amplification to 283 Vpp, were deposited into a resonator containing the object of interest. Cylindrical resonators containing parallel loops at uniform spacing were used for imaging experiments. The resonators were maintained at the resonant frequency by tuning and matching capacitors. A parallel resistor and overcoupled circuit was used to achieve Q values in the range 20-30. The transmit and receive arms were isolated using a transmit/receive diplexer. The dead time following the trailing edge of the pulse was about 450 ns. The first stage of the receive arm contained a low noise, high gain and fast recovery amplifier, suitable for detection of spin probes with spin-spin relaxation times (T2) in the order of μs. Detection of the induction signal was carried out by mixing the signals in the receiver arm centered around 300 MHz with a local oscillator at a frequency of 350 MHz. The amplified signals were digitized and summed using a 1 GHz digitizer/summer to recover the signals and enhance the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The time-domain signals were transformed into frequency-domain spectra, using Fourier transformation (FT). With the resonators used, objects of size up to 5 cm3 could be studied in imaging experiments. Spatial encoding of the spins was accomplished by volume excitation of the sample in the presence of static field gradients in the range of 1.0-1.5 G/cm. The spin densities were produced in the form of plane integrals and images were reconstructed using standard back-projection methods. The image resolution of the phantom objects containing the spin probe surrounded by lossy biologic medium was better than 0.2 mm with the gradients used. To examine larger objects at local sites, surface coils were used to detect and image spin probes successfully. The results from this study indicate the potential of rf FT EPR for in vivo applications. In particular, rf FT EPR may provide a means to obtain physiologic information such as tissue oxygenation and redox status

    Experiences in the development of magnesium cell technology at Central Electrochemical Research Institute, Karaikudi

    Research activities on the preparation of magnesium metal by molten salt electrolytic process were initiated in CECRI as early as in 1958. CECRI started its experiments on a bench scale level and further developed into pilot plant scale and finally to the scale of semicommercial unit. Various types of electrolytic cells were developed at CECRI which include externally heated cells with different design modifications, modular cells, bipolar/multipolar cells and new modified monopolar ceUs. The primary aim of each development was aimed at high current efficiencies energy efficiencies and space time yields. Various types of raw materials like magnesite, sea bitterns, and byproduct MgCl2 from ZrrTi plants etc. were utilised during the investigations. These studies were carried out with financial grants from Govt. of Tamil Nadu, CSIR, DRDO and Nuclear Fuel Complex. The paper illustrates the design and operational features of different electrolytic cells with consequent gradual decrease in specific energy consumption for magnesium production and increased space time yields with improvement in cell design and operational parameters

    Reconstruction for Time-Domain In Vivo EPR 3D Multigradient Oximetric Imaging—A Parallel Processing Perspective

    Three-dimensional Oximetric Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Imaging using the Single Point Imaging modality generates unpaired spin density and oxygen images that can readily distinguish between normal and tumor tissues in small animals. It is also possible with fast imaging to track the changes in tissue oxygenation in response to the oxygen content in the breathing air. However, this involves dealing with gigabytes of data for each 3D oximetric imaging experiment involving digital band pass filtering and background noise subtraction, followed by 3D Fourier reconstruction. This process is rather slow in a conventional uniprocessor system. This paper presents a parallelization framework using OpenMP runtime support and parallel MATLAB to execute such computationally intensive programs. The Intel compiler is used to develop a parallel C++ code based on OpenMP. The code is executed on four Dual-Core AMD Opteron shared memory processors, to reduce the computational burden of the filtration task significantly. The results show that the parallel code for filtration has achieved a speed up factor of 46.66 as against the equivalent serial MATLAB code. In addition, a parallel MATLAB code has been developed to perform 3D Fourier reconstruction. Speedup factors of 4.57 and 4.25 have been achieved during the reconstruction process and oximetry computation, for a data set with 23 × 23 × 23 gradient steps. The execution time has been computed for both the serial and parallel implementations using different dimensions of the data and presented for comparison. The reported system has been designed to be easily accessible even from low-cost personal computers through local internet (NIHnet). The experimental results demonstrate that the parallel computing provides a source of high computational power to obtain biophysical parameters from 3D EPR oximetric imaging, almost in real-time

    Formalization of Transform Methods using HOL Light

    Transform methods, like Laplace and Fourier, are frequently used for analyzing the dynamical behaviour of engineering and physical systems, based on their transfer function, and frequency response or the solutions of their corresponding differential equations. In this paper, we present an ongoing project, which focuses on the higher-order logic formalization of transform methods using HOL Light theorem prover. In particular, we present the motivation of the formalization, which is followed by the related work. Next, we present the task completed so far while highlighting some of the challenges faced during the formalization.     Exchange Anisotropy in Epitaxial and Polycrystalline NiO/NiFe Bilayers

    (001) oriented NiO/NiFe bilayers were grown on single crystal MgO (001) substrates by ion beam sputtering in order to determine the effect that the crystalline orientation of the NiO antiferromagnetic layer has on the magnetization curve of the NiFe ferromagnetic layer. Simple models predict no exchange anisotropy for the (001)-oriented surface, which in its bulk termination is magnetically compensated. Nonetheless exchange anisotropy is present in the epitaxial films, although it is approximately half as large as in polycrystalline films that were grown simultaneously. Experiments show that differences in exchange field and coercivity between polycrystalline and epitaxial NiFe/NiO bilayers couples arise due to variations in induced surface anisotropy and not from differences in the degree of compensation of the terminating NiO plane. Implications of these observations for models of induced exchange anisotropy in NiO/NiFe bilayer couples will be discussed.Comment: 23 pages in RevTex format, submitted to Phys Rev B

    What is food without love? The micro-politics of food practices in South Asians in Britain, India and Pakistan

    This article draws on Morgan’s theorisation of family life as consisting of political, moral, and emotional economies to examine the interplay of women’s control over resources, gender norms, and expectations of intimacy in the context of household food consumption. The research that informs the article focuses on findings from 84 interviews with two South Asian groups: Pakistani Muslim and Gujarati Hindu women with at least one dependent child and from a variety of occupations and household compositions. In examining everyday food consumption, the research demonstrates how gender hierarchies are reproduced by parallel, mutually reinforcing, political, moral, and emotional economies. The women in the study sometimes struggled to subvert gender oppression and negotiate more powerful positions within the household through food management and/or employing manipulative and deceptive tactics. The article argues that, while access to economic resources is important if women are to achieve desirable food and nutritional outcomes, it is not in itself sufficient to meet this aim. Instead, the interplay of resources, gender norms, and conjugal relations are central to household food consumption

    Comprehensive Overview of Bottom-up Proteomics using Mass Spectrometry

    Proteomics is the large scale study of protein structure and function from biological systems through protein identification and quantification. "Shotgun proteomics" or "bottom-up proteomics" is the prevailing strategy, in which proteins are hydrolyzed into peptides that are analyzed by mass spectrometry. Proteomics studies can be applied to diverse studies ranging from simple protein identification to studies of proteoforms, protein-protein interactions, protein structural alterations, absolute and relative protein quantification, post-translational modifications, and protein stability. To enable this range of different experiments, there are diverse strategies for proteome analysis. The nuances of how proteomic workflows differ may be challenging to understand for new practitioners. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of different proteomics methods to aid the novice and experienced researcher. We cover from biochemistry basics and protein extraction to biological interpretation and orthogonal validation. We expect this work to serve as a basic resource for new practitioners in the field of shotgun or bottom-up proteomics

    High Annual Risk of Tuberculosis Infection among Nursing Students in South India: A Cohort Study

    Background: Nurses in developing countries are frequently exposed to infectious tuberculosis (TB) patients, and have a high prevalence of TB infection. To estimate the incidence of new TB infection, we recruited a cohort of young nursing trainees at the Christian Medical College in Southern India. Annual tuberculin skin testing (TST) was conducted to assess the annual risk of TB infection (ARTI) in this cohort. Methodology/Principal Findings: 436 nursing students completed baseline two-step TST testing in 2007 and 217 were TST-negative and therefore eligible for repeat testing in 2008. 181 subjects completed a detailed questionnaire on exposure to tuberculosis from workplace and social contacts. A physician verified the questionnaire and clinical log book and screened the subjects for symptoms of active TB. The majority of nursing students (96.7%) were females, almost 84% were under 22 years of age, and 80% had BCG scars. Among those students who underwent repeat testing in 2008, 14 had TST conversions using the ATS/CDC/IDSA conversion definition of 10 mm or greater increase over baseline. The ARTI was therefore estimated as 7.8% (95%CI: 4.3-12.8%). This was significantly higher than the national average ARTI of 1.5%. Sputum collection and caring for pulmonary TB patients were both high risk activities that were associated with TST conversions in this young nursing cohort. Conclusions: Our study showed a high ARTI among young nursing trainees, substantially higher than that seen in the general Indian population. Indian healthcare providers and the Indian Revised National TB Control Programme will need to implement internationally recommended TB infection control interventions to protect its health care workforce

    Feasibility and analysis of bipolar concentric recording of Electrohysterogram with flexible active electrode

    The conduction velocity and propagation patterns of Electrohysterogram (EHG) provide fundamental information about uterine electrophysiological condition. The accuracy of these measurements can be impaired by both the poor spatial selectivity and sensitivity to the relative direction of the contraction propagation associated with conventional disc electrodes. Concentric ring electrodes could overcome these limitations the aim of this study was to examine the feasibility of picking up surface EHG signals using a new flexible tripolar concentric ring electrode (TCRE), and to compare it with conventional bipolar recordings. Simultaneous recording of conventional bipolar signals and bipolar concentric EHG (BC-EHG) were carried out on 22 pregnant women. Signal bursts were characterized and compared. No significant differences among channels in either duration or dominant frequency in the Fast Wave High frequency range were found. Nonetheless, the high pass filtering effect of the BC-EHG records resulted in lower frequency content within the range 0.1 to 0.2 Hz than the bipolar ones. Although the BC-EHG signal amplitude was about 5-7 times smaller than that of bipolar recordings, similar signal-to-noise ratio was obtained. These results suggest that the flexible TCRE is able to pick up uterine electrical activity and could provide additional information for deducing uterine electrophysiological condition.The authors are grateful to the Obstetrics Unit of the Hospital Universitario La Fe de Valencia (Valencia, Spain), where the recording sessions were carried out.
