Inferring Microscopic Kinetic Rates from Stationary State Distributions.

We present a principled approach for estimating the matrix of microscopic transition probabilities among states of a Markov process, given only its stationary state population distribution and a single average global kinetic observable. We adapt Maximum Caliber, a variational principle in which the path entropy is maximized over the distribution of all possible trajectories, subject to basic kinetic constraints and some average dynamical observables. We illustrate the method by computing the solvation dynamics of water molecules from molecular dynamics trajectories

Micromegas TPC studies at high magnetic fields using the charge dispersion signal

The International Linear Collider (ILC) Time Projection Chamber (TPC) transverse space-point resolution goal is 100 microns for all tracks including stiff 90 degree tracks with the full 2 meter drift. A Micro Pattern Gas Detector (MPGD) readout TPC can achieve the target resolution with existing techniques using 1 mm or narrower pads at the expense of increased detector cost and complexity. The new MPGD readout technique of charge dispersion can achieve good resolution without resorting to narrow pads. This has been demonstrated previously for 2 mm x 6 mm pads with GEMs and Micromegas in cosmic ray tests and in a KEK beam test in a 1 Tesla magnet. We have recently tested a Micromegas-TPC using the charge dispersion readout concept in a high field super-conducting magnet at DESY. The measured Micromegas gain was found to be constant within 0.5% for magnetic fields up to 5 Tesla. With the strong suppression of transverse diffusion at high magnetic fields, we measure a flat 50 micron resolution at 5 Tesla over the full 15 cm drift length of our prototype TPC.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

RF amplification property of the MgO-based magnetic tunnel junction using field-induced ferromagnetic resonance

The radio-frequency (RF) voltage amplification property of a tunnel magnetoresistance device driven by an RF external-magnetic-field-induced ferromagnetic resonance was studied. The proposed device consists of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) and an electrically isolated coplanar waveguide. The input RF voltage applied to the waveguide can excite the resonant dynamics in the free layer magnetization, leading to the generation of an output RF voltage under a DC bias current. The dependences of the RF voltage gain on the static external magnetic field strength and angle were systematically investigated. The design principles for the enhancement of the gain factor are also discussed.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure

An effective bound on Generalized Diophantine m-tuples

For non-zero integers nn and k2k\geq2, a generalized Diophantine mm-tuple with property Dk(n)D_k(n) is a set of mm positive integers S={a1,a2,,am}S = \{a_1,a_2,\ldots, a_m\} such that aiaj+na_ia_j + n is a kk-th power for 1i<jm1\leq i< j\leq m. Define Mk(n):=sup{S:SM_k(n):= \sup\{|S| : S has property Dk(n)}D_k(n)\}. In a recent work, the second author, S. Kim and M. R. Murty proved that Mk(n)M_k(n) is O(logn)O(\log n), for a fixed kk, as we vary nn. In this paper, we obtain effective upper bounds on Mk(n)M_k(n). In particular, we show that for k2k\geq 2, Mk(n)3ϕ(k)lognM_k(n) \leq 3\,\phi(k)\, \log n, if nn is sufficiently larger than kk

Polarization--universal rejection filtering by ambichiral structures made of indefinite dielectric--magnetic materials

An ambichiral structure comprising sheets of an anisotropic dielectric material rejects normally incident plane waves of one circular polarization (CP) state but not of the other CP state, in its fundamental Bragg regime. However, if the same structure is made of an dielectric--magnetic material with indefinite permittivity and permeability dyadics, it may function as a polarization--universal rejection filter because two of the four planewave components of the electromagnetic field phasors in each sheet are of the positive--phase--velocity type and two are of the negative--phase--velocity type.Comment: Cleaned citations in the tex
