    Learning data structure from classes: A case study applied to population genetics

    In most cases, the main goal of machine learning and data mining applications is to obtain good classifiers. However, final users, for instance researchers in other fields, sometimes prefer to infer new knowledge about their domain that may be useful to confirm or reject their hypotheses. This paper presents a learning method that works along these lines, in addition to reporting three interesting applications in the field of population genetics in which the aim is to discover relationships between species or breeds according to their genotypes. The proposed method has two steps: first it builds a hierarchical clustering of the set of classes and then a hierarchical classifier is learned. Both models can be analyzed by experts to extract useful information about their domain. In addition, we propose a new method for learning the hierarchical classifier. By means of a voting scheme employing pairwise binary models constrained by the hierarchical structure, the proposed classifier is computationally more efficient than previous approaches while improving on their performance

    In the present paper, we carry out a detailed analysis of the presence and mixing of various families of collective bands in 188^{188}Pb. Making use of the interacting boson model, we construct a particular intermediate basis that can be associated with the unperturbed bands used in more phenomenological studies. We use the E2 decay to construct a set of collective bands and discuss in detail the B(E2)-values. We also perform an analysis of these theoretical results (Q, B(E2)) to deduce an intrinsic quadrupole moment and the associated quadrupole deformation parameter, using an axially deformed rotor model.Comment: submitted to pr

    Instability and stability properties of traveling waves for the double dispersion equation

    In this article we are concerned with the instability and stability properties of traveling wave solutions of the double dispersion equation  uttuxx+auxxxxbuxxtt=(up1u)xx ~u_{tt} -u_{xx}+a u_{xxxx}-bu_{xxtt} = - (|u|^{p-1}u)_{xx}~ for  p>1~p>1,  ab>0~a\geq b>0. The main characteristic of this equation is the existence of two sources of dispersion, characterized by the terms uxxxxu_{xxxx} and uxxttu_{xxtt}. We obtain an explicit condition in terms of aa, bb and pp on wave velocities ensuring that traveling wave solutions of the double dispersion equation are strongly unstable by blow up. In the special case of the Boussinesq equation (b=0b=0), our condition reduces to the one given in the literature. For the double dispersion equation, we also investigate orbital stability of traveling waves by considering the convexity of a scalar function. We provide both analytical and numerical results on the variation of the stability region of wave velocities with aa, bb and pp and then state explicitly the conditions under which the traveling waves are orbitally stable.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figure

    The inverse scattering problem at fixed energy based on the Marchenko equation for an auxiliary Sturm-Liouville operator

    A new approach is proposed to the solution of the quantum mechanical inverse scattering problem at fixed energy. The method relates the fixed energy phase shifts to those arising in an auxiliary Sturm-Liouville problem via the interpolation theory of the Weyl-Titchmarsh m-function.     International audienceLSPIV technique enables the measurement of surface flow velocities using image sequence analysis. EDF and Irstea partnership made possible the development of Fudaa‑LSPIV freeware by DeltaCAD Company. Two software applications at flume and field scales are detailed: (i) bed shear stresses were calculated owing to LSPIV velocities, water depth and bathymetry for a physical model of the Old Rhine; (ii) the software was used to optimize the calculation parameters of LSPIV flood discharge measurement stations in Mediterranean rivers.La technique LSPIV (Large Scale Particle Image Velocimetry) permet de mesurer les vitesses de surface d'un écoulement par analyse de séquence d'images. Pour faciliter l'application opérationnelle de la méthode, un logiciel, Fudaa-LSPIV, a été développé par la société DeltaCAD dans le cadre d'une collaboration entre EDF et Irstea. Deux applications en laboratoire et en rivière sont présentées : (i) couplée avec des mesures de hauteur d'eau et de bathymétries, la LSPIV a permis d'estimer des paramètres de Shields sur le modèle physique à fond mobile du Vieux-Rhin ; (ii) le logiciel a été utilisé pour procéder à des analyses de sensibilité pour paramétrer ainsi au mieux les stations LSPIV de mesure de débit en crue de rivières cévenoles
