loneliness and life satisfaction in adolescents

    No full text
In this study, the mediator and moderator effects of global self-esteem on the relationship between loneliness and global life satisfaction in adolescents were investigated. The participants were 439 students, between age range of 15-18, who were attending four different high schools in Turkey. Data were collected by using the UCLA loneliness scale, Rosenberg self-esteem scale, and the satisfaction with life scale. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that global self-esteem partially mediated the relationship between loneliness and global life satisfaction. However, global self-esteem did not moderate the relationship between loneliness and global life satisfaction. The results are discussed in terms of the conceptional context. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Because of the variety of needs engendered by AIDS, a broadbased response to the epidemic is warranted. The traditional medical model, with its emphasis on inpatient hospital care, is expensive and fails to address other needs of people with AIDS (PWAs). This paper outlines an alternative model: the community-based response, or continuum-of-care model. It builds on earlier community models of an integrated network of service providers who can better meet a range of needs of PWAs outside the hospital. Although the model may include a designated hospital AIDS unit that supplies inpatient services, the continuum-of-care model incorporates other nonacute and psychosocial services offered through community-based providers, and these services rely to a large extent on volunteers. Nationwide, more than 400 community-based AIDS service organizations have been formed in response to the growing AIDS epidemic, or have evolved from existing organizations. The National AIDS Network (NAN) was formed in 1985 by five such organizations to represent at the national level the vision of community-based AIDS care. As the nexus for a national community-based response, NAN acts as a conduit for service providers to share experience as well as a clearinghouse for information and programs.3131822PMCnul

into Turkish: Validity and reliability studies

    No full text
Problem Statement: Life satisfaction has been defined as a cognitive evaluation of the quality of a person's life as a whole. Although numerous studies have been done with adults, little research has been investigated the life satisfaction in children and adolescents. Children and adolescents life satisfaction scales have been limited to one-dimensional measures of global life satisfaction, which yield only to a single overall score. The Multidimensional Students' Life Satisfaction Scale (MSLSS) was designed to provide a general life satisfaction score along with scores on five domains (family, friends, school, living environment, self). The adaptation of the MSLSS into Turkish will offer contribution to investigate underlying structure of life satisfaction in Turkish early adolescent.Purpose of Study: The aim of this study was to adapt the MSLSS into Turkish and to examine validity and reliability properties. Methods: Participants consist of 688 students from grades 6 through 8 of six junior high school in Malatya, Turkey. The mean age was 13.01. The data were collected by using the translated version of the MSLSS, developed by Huebner. For concurrent validity of the MSLSS-Turkish version, the Depression Scale for Children (DSC) was used. The factor structure of the MSLSS-Turkish version was tested by factor analyses with varimax. Furthermore, interfactor correlations, Cronbach Alpha coefficients and, test-retest coefficients were calculated. Results: The results of factor analyses supported the five satisfaction domains of the MSLSS-original version. The MSLSS-Turkish version accounting for 44.50% of the total variance contained 36 items loading .34 or higher. Acceptable internal consistency and test-retest values for the total scale and subscale scores were obtained. In addition, the relationships between the MSLSS and the DSC demonstrated concurrent validity of the MSLSS-Turkish version. The findings of this study indicated that the MSLSS was a valid and reliable instrument to measure life satisfaction in Turkish junior high school students.Recommendations: The validity and reliability studies of the MSLSS may be carried out in Turkish high school students. Future researches on the relationships between the MSLSS-Turkish version and various criterion measures (e.g., self esteem, parental attitudes) will be able to provide additional evidence for concurrent validity.C1 Pamukkale Univ Egitim Fak, Psikol Darusma Rehberl ABD, Denizli, Turkey

between Perceived Social Support and Stress in College Students

    No full text
During college years, which are known as a stressful time, students may often face stress personally, socially, academically, economically, and so forth in various areas of life. One of the important sources that students use to cope with stress is social support. Students can cope with stress easier via the support they receive from their friends or family. While social support is seen as a protective mechanism against stress, some psychological factors may have increasing or decreasing effects on this support. Positive and negative affects, two opposing indicators of individual psychological adjustment, may function differently in this context. In the current study, the moderator roles of positive and negative affect on the relationship between perceived social support and stress in college students was investigated. The sample consisted of 479 undergraduate students from the faculty of education in a public university. Data was collected using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, the Perceived Stress Scale, and the Positive and Negative Affect Scale. In data analysis, hierarchical multiple regression analysis based on the steps of Baron and Kenny's (1986) moderating model was used. The research findings indicate that negative affect has a moderator role in the relationship between perceived social support and stress, whereas positive affect does not have a similar function. Accordingly, as negative affect increases, the positive effect of social support on perceived stress decreases

Disposable cartridge biosensor platform for portable diagnostics

We developed two types of cantilever-based biosensors for portable diagnostics applications. One sensor is based on MEMS cantilever chip mounted in a microfluidic channel and the other sensor is based on a movable optical fiber placed across a microfluidic channel. Both types of sensors were aimed at direct mechanical measurement of coagulation time in a disposable cartridge using plasma or whole blood samples. There are several similarities and also some important differences between the MEMS based and the optical fiber based solutions. The aim of this paper is to provide a comparison between the two solutions and the results. For both types of sensors, actuation of the cantilever or the moving fiber is achieved using an electro coil and the readout is optical. Since both the actuation and sensing are remote, no electrical connections are required for the cartridge. Therefore it is possible to build low cost disposable cartridges. The reader unit for the cartridge contains light sources, photodetectors, the electro coil, a heater, analog electronics, and a microprocessor. The reader unit has different optical interfaces for the cartridges that have MEMS cantilevers and moving fibers. MEMS based platform has better sensitivity but optomechanical alignment is a challenge and measurements with whole blood were not possible due to high scattering of light by the red blood cells. Fiber sensor based platform has relaxed optomechanical tolerances, ease of manufacturing, and it allows measurements in whole blood. Both sensors were tested using control plasma samples for activated-Partial-Thromboplastin-Time (aPTT) measurements. Control plasma test results matched with the manufacturer’s datasheet. Optical fiber based system was tested for aPTT tests with human whole blood samples and the proposed platform provided repeatable test results making the system method of choice for portable diagnostics.TÜBİTA
