    Intranasal melanoma treated with radiation therapy in three dogs

    Three dogs were investigated for chronic unilateral nasal discharge. In all cases CT imaging showed an intranasal mass causing turbinate lysis and no evidence of metastasis. Cytology in cases 1 (a 14-year-old neutered male crossbreed dog) and 2 (a five-year-old neutered male German Shepherd dog) demonstrated a pleomorphic cell population with variable intracellular pigment suspicious of melanocytic neoplasia. Histopathology with immunohistochemistry (Melan-A and vimentin, plus PNL-2 in one case) confirmed the diagnosis of melanoma in all dogs. All dogs were treated with megavoltage radiotherapy using linear accelerators. Cases 1 and 3 (a nine-year-old neutered female beagle dog) received a hypofractionated (4 Ă— 8 Gy) protocol and case 2 received a definitive (12 Ă— 4 Gy) protocol. Complete remission was demonstrated on repeat CT scan five months after diagnosis in case 1 and seven months in case 2. Stable disease was documented on CT at four months for case 3; however, clinical signs in this dog remained controlled for 10 months in total. Case 1 died of unrelated causes five months after diagnosis, case 2 was euthanased due to the development of seizures 13 months after diagnosis, and case 3 was lost to follow-up 12 months after diagnosis. Melanoma should be considered as a rare differential diagnosis for primary nasal neoplasia in the dog and radiation therapy can be used as effective local therapy

    A cost comparison of traditional drainage and SUDS in Scotland

    The Dunfermline Eastern Expansion (DEX) is a 350 ha mixed development which commenced in 1996. Downstream water quality and flooding issues necessitated a holistic approach to drainage planning and the site has become a European showcase for the application of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS). However, there is minimal data available regarding the real costs of operating and maintaining SUDS to ensure they continue to perform as per their design function. This remains one of the primary barriers to the uptake and adoption of SUDS. This paper reports on what is understood to be the only study in the UK where actual costs of constructing and maintaining SUDS have been compared to an equivalent traditional drainage solution. To compare SUDS costs with traditional drainage, capital and maintenance costs of underground storage chambers of analogous storage volumes were estimated. A whole life costing methodology was then applied to data gathered. The main objective was to produce a reliable and robust cost comparison between SUDS and traditional drainage. The cost analysis is supportive of SUDS and indicates that well designed and maintained SUDS are more cost effective to construct, and cost less to maintain than traditional drainage solutions which are unable to meet the environmental requirements of current legislation

    Identifying human waste contribution of phosphorus loads to domestic wastewater

    This paper describes an approach to identify the phosphorus contribution of faeces and urine in domestic wastewater as part of a model verification exercise for a collaborative project between UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR), Scotland & Northern Ireland Forum for Environmental Research (SNIFFER) and UK Technical Advisory Group (UKTAG). The approach develops a methodology used in recent investigations by University of Abertay Dundee, by combining behaviour questionnaire with in sewer sampling and flow monitoring. The approach aimed to reduce the uncertainties associated with the apportionment of Total Phosphorus (TP) and Soluble Reactive Phosphorus (SRP) from domestic sources as identified during the literature review as part of the collaborative project. A domestic sub-catchment was identified which could be isolated, sampled and analysed to identify domestic contribution of SRP and TP load in domestic foul water. This data analysed with the results of product usage questionnaires, was used to verify a generic model developed to determine the significance of laundry and dishwasher phosphorus contributions to domestic wastewater. Conclusions were drawn regarding the effectiveness of this approach in identifying and quantifying the sources of phosphorus to wastewater treatment works

    Spin flip from dark to bright states in InP quantum dots

    We report measurements of the time for spin flip from dark (non-light emitting) exciton states in quantum dots to bright (light emitting) exciton states in InP quantum dots. Dark excitons are created by two-photon excitation by an ultrafast laser. The time for spin flip between dark and bright states is found to be approximately 200 ps, independent of density and temperature below 70 K. This is much shorter than observed in other quantum dot systems. The rate of decay of the luminescence intensity, approximately 300 ps, is not simply equal to the radiative decay rate from the bright states, because the rate of decay is limited by the rate of conversion from dark excitons into bright excitons. The dependence of the luminescence decay time on the spin flip time is a general effect that applies to many experiments.Comment: 3 figure

    Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism data analysis for quantitative comparison of microbial communities

    Includes bibliographical references (page 932).Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) is a culture-independent method of obtaining a genetic fingerprint of the composition of a microbial community. Comparisons of the utility of different methods of (i) including peaks, (ii) computing the difference (or distance) between profiles, and (iii) performing statistical analysis were made by using replicated profiles of eubacterial communities. These samples included soil collected from three regions of the United States, soil fractions derived from three agronomic field treatments, soil samples taken from within one meter of each other in an alfalfa field, and replicate laboratory bioreactors. Cluster analysis by Ward's method and by the unweighted-pair group method using arithmetic averages (UPGMA) were compared. Ward's method was more effective at differentiating major groups within sets of profiles; UPGMA had a slightly reduced error rate in clustering of replicate profiles and was more sensitive to outliers. Most replicate profiles were clustered together when relative peak height or Hellinger-transformed peak height was used, in contrast to raw peak height. Redundancy analysis was more effective than cluster analysis at detecting differences between similar samples. Redundancy analysis using Hellinger distance was more sensitive than that using Euclidean distance between relative peak height profiles. Analysis of Jaccard distance between profiles, which considers only the presence or absence of a terminal restriction fragment, was the most sensitive in redundancy analysis, and was equally sensitive in cluster analysis, if all profiles had cumulative peak heights greater than 10,000 fluorescence units. It is concluded that T-RFLP is a sensitive method of differentiating between microbial communities when the optimal statistical method is used for the situation at hand. It is recommended that hypothesis testing be performed by redundancy analysis of Hellinger-transformed data and that exploratory data analysis be performed by cluster analysis using Ward's method to find natural groups or by UPGMA to identify potential outliers. Analyses can also be based on Jaccard distance if all profiles have cumulative peak heights greater than 10,000 fluorescence units

    Spin Injection and Relaxation in Ferromagnet-Semiconductor Heterostructures

    We present a complete description of spin injection and detection in Fe/Al_xGa_{1-x}As/GaAs heterostructures for temperatures from 2 to 295 K. Measurements of the steady-state spin polarization in the semiconductor indicate three temperature regimes for spin transport and relaxation. At temperatures below 70 K, spin-polarized electrons injected into quantum well structures form excitons, and the spin polarization in the quantum well depends strongly on the electrical bias conditions. At intermediate temperatures, the spin polarization is determined primarily by the spin relaxation rate for free electrons in the quantum well. This process is slow relative to the excitonic spin relaxation rate at lower temperatures and is responsible for a broad maximum in the spin polarization between 100 and 200 K. The spin injection efficiency of the Fe/Al_xGa_{1-x}As Schottky barrier decreases at higher temperatures, although a steady-state spin polarization of at least 6 % is observed at 295 K.Comment: 3 Figures Submitted to Phys.     The Texture of Surficial Sediments in Western Long Island Sound off the Norwalk Islands, Connecticut

    Grain-size analyses were performed on 69 samples from western Long Island Sound. The relative grain-size frequency distributions and related statistics are reported herein. Descriptions of the benthic character from video tapes and still camera photographs of the bottom at these stations, and 33 others, are also presented. The southern and eastern parts of the study area are dominated by poorly sorted clayey silts that have nearly symmetrical distributions. Gravelly sediments are prevalent in the shallow northwestern part of the study area, but are also present in central part of the study area. Bands of sand, silty sand, and sand-silt-clay occur on the flanks of the gravelly areas
