Effective band-structure in the insulating phase versus strong dynamical correlations in metallic VO2

Using a general analytical continuation scheme for cluster dynamical mean field calculations, we analyze real-frequency self-energies, momentum-resolved spectral functions, and one-particle excitations of the metallic and insulating phases of VO2. While for the former dynamical correlations and lifetime effects prevent a description in terms of quasi-particles, the excitations of the latter allow for an effective band-structure. We construct an orbital-dependent, but static one-particle potential that reproduces the full many-body spectrum. Yet, the ground state is well beyond a static one-particle description. The emerging picture gives a non-trivial answer to the decade-old question of the nature of the insulator, which we characterize as a ``many-body Peierls'' state.Comment: 5 pages, 4 color figure

This research was conducted in December 2015 in the Batu Kalang Beach coastal area of the Pesisir Selatan Regency, West Sumatera Province, aimed to determine the distribution and abundance of bivalves in the intertidal zone. Bivalves samples were taken by using Quadrant Transect Sampling Method and sample was analyzed in Marine Biology Laboratory, Fisheries and Marine Sciences Facultyand data was investigated descriptively. Based on the result, upper zone has the lowest abundance that is 4,00 ind/m2. At middle zone the abundance of bivalves was about 4,11 ind/m2, this abundance higher than upper zone. Bivalves abundance on lower zone has the highest abundance that is 4,89 ind/m². Bivalves abundance that founded during research on Batu Kalang Beach was variated, which as the highest bivalves was Periglypta reticulate, founded 15 species and the lowest abundance of bivalves founded three species that Hemidonax sp, Gafrarium divaricatum, Codakia tigerina

Abstract Today, with little time remaining, negotiators confront a disorganized text that is far too long and replete with conflicting proposals that cross red lines for major players. Nonetheless, political leaders express confidence that a deal is achievable. Unlike the task of Kyoto-producing politically feasible mitigation targets for developed nations-the post 2020 agreement covers (at least) six themes: mitigation for all nations, adaptation, finance, technology transfer, capacity building and transparency. Residual acrimony and distrust from Copenhagen hamper the process which must resolve many complex, contentious issues, e.g. legal form and compliance, the role (or not) for markets and offset projects, intellectual property rights, compensation for loss and damage, transparency and associated measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) and review procedures. Overshadowing all remains the question of how the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities (CBDR) will manifest throughout the agreement, e.g. from mitigation to reporting and review to finance. .../... Acknowledgements Dr. Flannery has attended nearly every negotiating session associated with the international climate change agreement since the first meeting in Chantilly, Virginia (1990). He participates as an observer-accredited with a various industry groups in the past and more recently with Resources for the Future-never as a member of a governmental or intergovernmental delegation. The views in this chapter are based on personal observations and conversations over many years with other participants, from national delegations, business, academia, intergovernmental organizations, think tanks and other observers. However, the Paris Agreement appears unlikely to fulfill the long-established narrative to be "on track" to limit warming to less than 2 (or 1.5) C. Only recently have political leaders begun to temper expectations. They will need to manage expectations thoughtfully to avoid a backlash from a range of nations, stakeholders and media, and to restore the credibility of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) as an effective process

ABSTRACT The problem of retention is not only in general organizations but also in arts organizations, in this case, is the band (music group). The model of retention is influenced by the intention to stay. Then the intention to stay is influenced by several variables, one of which is individual characteristics. These individual characteristics are explained through research conducted by the author on the topic of retention in indie bands at Yogyakarta. The method used in this paper is a descriptive research method with the data taken on observational data and interviews when distributing questionnaires. This research found that individual characteristics of a band member can increase the intention to stay in a band

Entanglement dynamics of two qubits under the influence of external kicks and Gaussian pulses

We have investigated the dynamics of entanglement between two spin-1/2 qubits that are subject to independent kick and Gaussian pulse type external magnetic fields analytically as well as numerically. Dyson time ordering effect on the dynamics is found to be important for the sequence of kicks. We show that "almost-steady" high entanglement can be created between two initially unentangled qubits by using carefully designed kick or pulse sequences

Determinants of student satisfaction with campus residence life at a South African University

    Get PDF
Although there are a number of studies on the determinants of general quality of life among university students, these occur mainly in developed countries and do not focus specifically on campus-based residence life. It has long been accepted that factors outside the classroom (“the other curriculum”) can contribute to academic success, as well as the achievement of other important outcomes such as the appreciation of human diversity. Striving towards equality of residence life satisfaction across different racial and gender groups, for example, is thus important for academic outcomes and for the development of well-functioning citizens. This study is based on the 2011 Quality of Residence Life (QoRL) Survey, conducted at a South African university, comprising roughly 2 000 respondents. Based on descriptive analyses and ordered probit regressions, the study investigates the association between satisfaction with QoRL and (i) residence milieu and characteristics, (ii) direct and indirect discrimination, (iii) perceptions of drug and alcohol issues in residence, (iv) safety, and (v) individual student characteristics. One of the main findings is that there are no significant differences in satisfaction with QoRL across racial and gender groups; a finding that suggests significant progress in university transformation and equity goals. The general atmosphere and characteristics of residences are also important predictors of QoRL satisfaction.Economic Research Southern Africa (ERSA) is a research programme funded by the National Treasury of South Africa
