The purpose of this study is to clarify the current status and issues of implementation of medical care (sputum suction · tube feeding) by care workers at the Long-Term Care Insurance Facilities in A prefecture. As for the survey method, a questionnaire was mailed to the care workers, nurses, and managers of each facility regarding the implementation status of medical care, and respondents were obtained using the enclosed return envelope to send it back. The result shows that the acceptance of users requiring medical care was 91% at the Intensive Care Homes for the elderly, 83% at the Long-Term Care Health Facilities, and 100% at the Medical Long-Term Care Sanatorium. At the Intensive Care Homes for the elderly, 46% of the respondents perform “sputum suction” and 36% perform “tube feeding”. At the Long-Term Care Health Facility and the Medical Long-Term Care Sanatorium, neither “sputum suction” nor “tube feeding” is carried out by care workers. Regarding the implementation of “sputum suction” by care workers in Intensive Care Homes for the elderly, 67% of care workers’ respondents, 46% of nurses’, and 36% of managers’ show that they feel “anxiety”. Regarding “tube feeding,” it is shown that 29% of care workers’ respondents, 36% of nurses’, and 23% of managers’ feel “anxiety.” The factors of anxiety about the medical care implementation of care workers is that there are few opportunities for care workers to be carried out because it is done by the nurses. Another factor is that there are few users who need the implementation of medical care by care workers. This survey suggests lack of knowledge and insufficient experience in medical care make it anxious for the care workers to offer the implementation to the elderly. It can be said that it is foremost important for care workers to offer suitable training plans such as steady follow-up programs in order to reduce anxiety of care workers and respond properly when to conduct safe medical care to the elderly users with confidence. It is urgently needed to establish a secured training and follow-up systems, so that a safe and secure environmental conditions are built in the Long‐Term Care Insurance Facilities to both the care workers and users.departmental bulletin pape

Antioxidant properties of bioactive compounds in fruit and vegetable waste

    Get PDF
In recent years, great interest has arisen in the study of compounds with antioxidant activity present in agri-food residues. The growing demand from consumers for antioxidants of natural origin, the continuous growth in the world population and the consequent increase in the amount of food residues generated have greatly promoted this field of research. The search for new uses and applications for all this waste has become a mandatory objective within the framework of global environmental management. But, in addition, it offers a promising opportunity to study the great diversity of bioactive compounds that exist in nature and to analyze their biological activity and the associated health benefits. Among agri-food waste, fruit and vegetable by-products constitute a truly abundant and affordable source of natural antioxidants, such as phenolic compounds. These antioxidant phytochemicals are of great interest for different economic sectors, such as food, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical, the latter having seen an exponential development in recent years

Valorization of agri-food waste through the extraction of bioactive molecules. Prediction of their sunscreen action

    Get PDF
The aim of this work was to identify the phenolic composition of 18 different vegetable residues and to determine the relationship between their phenolic compounds, antioxidant capacity and sun protection factor. For this purpose, samples of agri-food residues were analyzed to quantify their antioxidant capacity, total polyphenol and flavonoid content, sun protection factor and individual phenolic compounds through HPLC-DAD-FLD. Among the different phenolic compounds found in the extracts, the phenolic acids, especially caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, p-coumaric acid and protocatechuic acid were the ones that have been most frequently identified, and, therefore, are present in a wide range of extracts. Black chai tea, lemon ginger tea and peanut extracts were the most antioxidant and photoprotective extracts. Phenolic compounds in the extracts have been found to contribute to their antioxidant activity and are closely correlated to their photoprotective capacity. A regression model that allows predicting the photoprotective capacity of any extract based on its total phenol content has been developed as a tool to determine the most suitable industrial application for each vegetable extract. The authors wish to thank the Government of Navarra (Project PC093-094 FORINSEC) for the financial support. Water-Tank and Semi-Field Experimental Investigation of a Hose Net Fish-Hauling Device for Next-Generation Set-Net Fishing

    Get PDF
The flexible fire hose and net (hose net) is a novel fish-hauling device developed for set-net fishery. The hose net is placed inside the box chamber net, air is injected from one edge of the hose net, the hoses are inflated, and the buoyancy force is increased. The net floats up gradually, cornering the fish on the other edge. In previous studies, we have conducted a series of floating-up and sinking-down experiments to evaluate the performance of the hose net in calm water. In this study, aimed at the practical implementation of the hose net fish-hauling system, we conducted a water tank experiment and a semi-field test to confirm the operation of the hose net, which was installed inside a box chamber net model. The results demonstrated that the net could float up gradually in an ideal form and stretched on the surface of the box net. The time taken to float up processes varied with the air injected into the auxiliary hose and hose net, so that the motion of the hose net could be controlled by adjusting the air at different parts of practical operation. Furthermore, semi-field trials were conducted to verify its performance in the natural marine environment and its ability to capture schools of fish. Overall, this innovative hose net fish-hauling device is expected to be valuable for next-generation set-net fishing.journal articl

Evaluation of grape stems and grape stem extracts for sulfur dioxide replacement during grape wine production

Sulfur dioxide (SO2), the main preservative in wine, may affect the sensory properties of the wines, as well as cause allergic reactions and headaches in sensitive people. The aim of this work was to evaluate the replacement of SO2 in Tempranillo wines with Mazuelo grape stem products. Five Tempranillo red wines were elaborated: positive control (60 mg/L SO2); negative control with no preservatives; Mazuelo extract (200 mg/L); Mazuelo extract combined with SO2 (100 mg/L + 20 mg/L); and Mazuelo stem (400 mg/L). The oenological parameters, antioxidant capacity, total phenolic (TP), total flavonoids (TF) and total anthocyanins (TA) contents were determined. Additionally, individual phenols were analyzed by HPLC-DAD-FLD. The spectrophotometric analyses showed that the wines had similar antioxidant capacities and concentrations of TP and TF. However, TA was more affected by the lack of SO2 as anthocyanins presented higher concentrations in positive control samples. The concentrations of individual phenols followed a similar path in all samples. Wines containing sulfites were more similar than the other treatments. However, these similarities were not reflected on the sensory analysis performed, as triangle test did not show differences between the wine with extract addition and the positive control wine. Therefore, Mazuelo stem extract could be a possible strategy for SO2 replacement. Nevertheless, further studies are necessary to confirm the potential of grape stem extracts as wine preservative. This study was also supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under the scope of the strategic funding of UIDB/04469/2020 unit, and by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Competitiveness factors Operational program – Norte 2020, COMPETE and by National Funds through the FCT - under the project AgriFood XXI (NORTE- 01-0145-FEDER-000041
