    Music Therapy in Hospice and Palliative Care: a Review of the Empirical Data

    Although music therapy is an established allied health profession and is used with increasing frequency in the treatment of those with a terminal illness, there is a real dearth of empirical research literature supporting the use of music therapy in end-of-life care. This article reviews the empirical studies found in the literature and documents the emergence of an evidenced-based approach to the use of music therapy in hospice and palliative care. A total of 11 studies are reviewed; of these, six show significant differences supporting the use of music therapy in this area. Dependent variables positively affected by music therapy include pain, physical comfort, fatigue and energy, anxiety and relaxation, time and duration of treatment, mood, spirituality and quality of life. Guidelines for future research are considered, and variables that need to be controlled are presented. The need to create an evidence-based approach to hospice and palliative care music therapy is articulated, and future researchers are empowered to continue to conduct investigations among this population

    THE IMPACT OF FORMAL AND INFORMAL CONTROLS ON RECIDIVISM IN NORWAY AND THE UNITED STATES: THE CASE OF NORTH DAKOTA PRISON EXPERIMENT

    The goal of this research is to investigate to what degree the differences in recidivism rates can be accounted by differences in the dynamics of interaction between informal and formal aspects of prison organizations and their cultures in the United States and Norway. Effectiveness of prison policies as impacted by interactions of informal and formal groups within and outside the correctional systems is analyzed by using U.S. and Scandinavian Census data, official reports, and secondary literature review. Data on the North Dakota Prison Experiment was collected on a visit to two of North Dakota's correctional facilities. A counselor from the Organization for Families and Friends of Prisoners based out of Oslo, Norway was also interviewed. Scandinavian policy implications for strategies to reduce recidivism in the United States are discussed

    Scoring a forced-choice image-based assessment of personality: A comparison of machine learning, regression, and summative approaches

    Recent years have seen rapid advancements in the way that personality is measured, resulting in a number of innovative predictive measures being proposed, including using features extracted from videos and social media profiles. In the context of selection, game- and image-based assessments of personality are emerging, which can overcome issues like social desirability bias, lack of engagement and low response rates that are associated with traditional self-report measures. Forced-choice formats, where respondents are asked to rank responses, can also mitigate issues such as acquiescence and social desirability bias. Previously, we reported on the development of a gamified forced-choice image-based assessment of the Big Five personality traits created for use in selection, using Lasso regression for the scoring algorithms. In this study, we compare the machine-learning-based Lasso approach to ordinary least squares regression, as well as the summative approach that is typical of forced-choice formats. We find that the Lasso approach performs best in terms of generalisability and convergent validity, although the other methods have greater discriminate validity. We recommend the use of predictive Lasso regression models for scoring forced-choice image-based measures of personality over the other approaches. Potential further studies are suggested

    Pediatric Psychologists’ Career Satisfaction: 2015 Society of Pediatric Psychology Workforce Survey Results.

    Little is known about the career satisfaction of pediatric psychologists, who specialize in psychological research, teaching, and clinical service in the context of pediatric health care. As part of the larger Society of Pediatric Psychology Workforce Survey and in collaboration with the American Psychological Association Center for Workforce Studies, this study aimed to (1) describe the career domains which pediatric psychologists perceive to be important and their satisfaction in each domain, and (2) compare satisfaction of pediatric psychologists across work settings, number of positions, appointment duration, professional roles, career stage, academic rank, and gender. Responses from 336 pediatric psychologists demonstrated high career satisfaction. Domains of career satisfaction that received mean scores indicating high importance include balance of work and personal lives, peer/collegial support, and flexibility and choice in the workplace, but on average respondents reported being only somewhat satisfied in these domains. Total satisfaction scores were significantly higher among pediatric psychologists in 9–10-month appointments, primarily research careers, and at higher academic ranks, but scores were similar across employment settings and genders. To enhance career satisfaction and retention, pediatric psychologists may seek additional mentorship or explore new employment roles, and administrators and managers may consider adopting workplace policies or making environmental changes that could address specific areas of need

    Overview and commentary of the CDEI's extended roadmap to an effective AI assurance ecosystem

    In recent years, the field of ethical artificial intelligence (AI), or AI ethics, has gained traction and aims to develop guidelines and best practices for the responsible and ethical use of AI across sectors. As part of this, nations have proposed AI strategies, with the UK releasing both national AI and data strategies, as well as a transparency standard. Extending these efforts, the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation (CDEI) has published an AI Assurance Roadmap, which is the first of its kind and provides guidance on how to manage the risks that come from the use of AI. In this article, we provide an overview of the document's vision for a “mature AI assurance ecosystem” and how the CDEI will work with other organizations for the development of regulation, industry standards, and the creation of AI assurance practitioners. We also provide a commentary of some key themes identified in the CDEI's roadmap in relation to (i) the complexities of building “justified trust”, (ii) the role of research in AI assurance, (iii) the current developments in the AI assurance industry, and (iv) convergence with international regulation
