In the first half of the 1980s, lithic materials from the prehistoric settlement of Ovčarovo-Gorata in northern Bulgaria were studied by Vietnamese archaeologist Nguyen Van Binh. At that time, he was a doctoral student in the Department of Prehistory of the National Archaeological Institute and Museum Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. In 1985, Nguyen Van Binh completed his doctoral thesis “Prehistoric flint artifact assemblages from the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene on the basis of materials from North East Bulgaria”, which presents the results of lithic assemblages processed from the site

HOABINHIAN IN VIETNAM AND ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES FROM 20,000 TO 7,000 YEARS BP

    Get PDF
This article studies the basic economic activities of Hoa Binh cultural inhabitants in the period of 20,000 to 7,000 years BP, including tool making, hunting, gathering, and primitive agriculture. The research results have identified a number of key economic characteristics of Hoa Binh cultural residents and evaluated the effectiveness of human methods of finding and gathering food under the fluctuations of the natural environment during the late Pleistocene to early Holocene in northern Vietnam. Little evidence directly related to cultivation and animal husbandry has been found at Hoa Binh cultural sites, so the issue of Hoa Binh agriculture is still a working hypothesis that needs to be studied further

Optimal operation of Hoa Binh reservoir for flood control on Hong-Thai Binh river system

    Get PDF
In the paper the optimal operation of Hoabinh reservoir for flood control on Hong–Thai Binh river system is presented. The findings show that in the flood season in 1996 if the operation of gates and outlets of Hoa Binh reservoir was made base on the calculated release, the water level at Hanoi would be 12.3 m and the water level of Hoa Binh reservoir would be 98 m. So the calculated release from Hoabinh reservoir in August 1996 can be considered as optimal in the mean that the water level at Hanoi can be controlled and the Hoabinh reservoir still have necessary pool for controlling the next floods

FROM THE VIEWPOINT “WU-WEI” OF TAOISM TO THE VIEWPOINT “NHÀN” (LEISURE) OF NGUYEN BINH KHIEM

Nguyen Binh Khiem (1491 - 1585), a great thinker of Vietnam in the sixteenth century, contributed to the history of Vietnamese thought with many valuable ideas, including the “Nhàn” (leisure) viewpoint. The thought “Nhàn” (leisure) was originated from Vietnamese social characteristics in the sixteenth century and inherited values in the traditions of national culture and the quintessence of human culture, especially under the profound and clear influence of ideology on human life of Taoism and Lao Tzu. Lao Tzu argued that human beings could not interfere with the evolution of all things and they had to be “wu-wei” in accordance to the rule – “Tao” (faith) to adapt to the objective development of nature and society. Through the method of historical and logical research, analysis and synthesis, the authors found that, from the viewpoint of “wu-wei” of Taoism, Nguyen Binh Khiem proposed a very profound and idyllic “Nhàn” (leisure) viewpoint to deal with the fluctuations of social history at that time through two issues, namely the thought on the category “Nhàn” (leisure) and the content of the category “Nhàn” (leisure) through human beings’ relations with nature and dealing with themselves. His “Nhàn” (leisure) viewpoint, due to objective and subjective circumstances, could not overcome the limitations of the times. However, in the current historical and social conditions, if we know how to inherit the values and overcome limitations, the “Nhàn” (leisure) viewpoint still has modern meanings.  Article visualizations

Symposium on participatory approaches to reservoir fisheries management: issues, challenges and policies. Dambulla, Sri Lanka, 04-06 Oct. 2004 Session I. Community-based fisheries management; experience in other countries: presentation on STREAM Vietnam’s experience

    Get PDF
Established in early 2002, STREAM Vietnam has so far attained a number of good experiences and lessons in using participatory approaches for its work. The Country Office has been able to link to a wide range of stakeholders, and is working hard to build close relationships amongst them, so that institutional entities can better support the livelihoods of poor aquatic resources users, and support disadvantaged groups of people to improve their living standards by themselves. Reservoir fisheries and co-management are at early stage in Vietnam, but in certain places and industries co-management has brought about successful results by involving proactive participation of communities. Situated on the same continent and having many similarities, the interaction in agriculture and fisheries sector between Vietnam and Sri Lanka has brought the two countries closer. Being members of the STREAM family, there are great opportunities for exchange of experiences and lessons towards sustainable management of reservoir resources. (PDF has 11 pages.
