The present work of conclusion of course was elaborated as a partial requisite of approval in the course of Degree in Social Sciences of the Federal University of the Southern Frontier, and has like subject, an analysis of the relations of work and study in the case of the school of basic education Druziana Sartori . The aim of this study was to investigate and understand the transformations and changes that occur in the lives of adolescents who work and study in high school and how the changes are linked to the family, educational and social contexts to which they belong. The main approaches to study and work in adolescence focused on the positions and notions of the researched students in relation to the institutional scenarios to which they are part, their insertion in the job market and the family and student relationships that take place after this insertion. In order to carry out this research, a qualitative approach was chosen, making use of semi-structured interviews and open questionnaires applied to 10 (ten) students of the Sartori Druze Basic School of Education, located in the municipality of Chapec? ? SC, com faixa et?ria de 15 (quinze) a 17 (dezessete) anos, matriculados no ensino regular

Dependence and autonomy in sub-national island jurisdictions : the case of the kingdom of the Netherlands

I thank Godfrey Baldacchino and David Milne for their stimulating criticism on earlier drafts of this chapter, as well as the anonymous reviewers for The Round Table for additional useful suggestions. Much of the empirical matter presented in this chapter is based on Oostindie and Klinkers (2001, 2003). More elaborate analyses, references and background materials to this brief sketch of Dutch Caribbean decolonization may be found in these texts. Two centuries after the Haitian revolution the decolonization of the Caribbean still seems incomplete; nor is this situation likely to change in the near future. Of the four major European colonizers, only Spain has been forced to retreat from the region. With Puerto Rico (3.8 million people) and the US Virgin Islands (110000), the USA has the largest share of the population in the non-sovereign Caribbean, followed by France with its departements d'outre-mer (DOM, roughly 1 million), The Netherlands with the Netherlands Antilles (180000) and Aruba (90000), and the UK with its overseas territories (155000). In all, some 15% of the 37 million people living in the Caribbean today reside in non-sovereign territories.peer-reviewe

How Bad is the Freedom to Flood-It?

    Get PDF
International audienceFixed-Flood-It and Free-Flood-It are combinatorial problems on graphs that generalize a very popular puzzle called Flood-It. Both problems consist of recoloring moves whose goal is to produce a monochromatic ("flooded") graph as quickly as possible. Their difference is that in Free-Flood-It the player has the additional freedom of choosing the vertex to play in each move. In this paper, we investigate how this freedom affects the complexity of the problem. It turns out that the freedom is bad in some sense. We show that some cases trivially solvable for Fixed-Flood-It become intractable for Free-Flood-It. We also show that some tractable cases for Fixed-Flood-It are still tractable for Free-Flood-It but need considerably more involved arguments. We finally present some combinatorial properties connecting or separating the two problems. In particular, we show that the length of an optimal solution for Fixed-Flood-It is always at most twice that of Free-Flood-It, and this is tight

The Civil War and Southern Honor Culture: William G. Brownlow, Southern Unionists, and the “God-forsaken Scoundrels” of Secession

    Get PDF
This paper explores the East Tennessee Unionists of the Civil War era and their connection to southern honor culture. Though East Tennessee technically seceded in June 1861, the citizens of the region refused to acknowledge that in their daily proceedings and some of the most prominent citizens of the region, such as William G. Brownlow, Horace Maynard, and Andrew Johnson, actively refused to participate in Confederate governance. The guiding force behind these men was the principle of honor that all southern men- Union loyal or not- held dear. This paper tells the story of the secession crisis in East Tennessee and links the events of this period to the premise of honor culture
