This research deals with the following aims: (1) describing the context of Daughter of China, (2) explaining the criticism of the author against violation of human rights, (3) describing the author’s evangelical mission. The qualitative research is outlined by the descriptive method. The writer of the thesis collected and categorized the data obtained. The first step was exposing the context of United States of America and People’s Republic of China Society at the end of the twentieth century. Then it was followed by the analysis of the author’s criticism against human right violation and the author’s evangelical mission. The result of this research are as follows: (1) there was correlation between author’s social background and intention and the social context of People’s Republic of China and United States of America, (2) author’s criticism about human rights violation can be categorized into upper class intimidation, social disparity, the rigid government rules which consist of One Child Policy and loyalist communist obligation, gender inequality which consist of abandoned baby girl and attitude toward girls’ education, starvation of children’s orphanage, the limitation of religious freedom, and the peasants’ obligation to the government, (3) The evangelical mission conveyed by the author which had been identified was based on the following principals: (1) faithful, (2) loving and confident, (3) tolerant and respectability, (4) recognizing others, (5) religious freedom, (6) peace, (7) exemplification, and (8) dialogu

    This research aims at: (1) finding out the social class structure of the women characters in Oscar Wilde’s A Woman of No Importance and George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion based on sociological perspective; (2) examining the struggle of the women characters in the Oscar Wilde’s A Woman of No Importance and George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion based on feminist perspective. The qualitative research is carried out by making use of the descriptive method. The researcher analyzes the data by using sociology of literature and feminist approach. The analysis is used for: describing the social class of the women and analyzing the women struggle to fight for the inequality of rights. Based on the result of the data analysis, the research findings are: (1) there are social classes reflected in Oscar Wilde’s A Woman of No Importance and George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion in the Victorian age which brougth misery to the poor people or lower social class; (2) the major female characters did efforts as they seem the inequality of right, role and participation in the society to make their right equal as men. (3) giving the opportunity of equal education to the working class especially for the women will make them have an option to get the same level or in other words there is no social class distinction and gender inequality

    The major problem of this study is the optimistic view of life reflected in Eleanor Porter’s Pollyanna (1913). The aims of this study are to describe Pollyanna portrayal in Eleanor H. Porter’s Pollyanna novel, to explain Pollyanna’s self-concept in novel, and to describe needs and motives underlie Pollyanna’s behavior. This study focuses on the major character, namely Pollyanna. The type of the study is qualitative research. The method of data collection is document analysis, while the technique of data analysis is descriptive analysis in which the researcher interprets the text and the content relating to the psychological of the major character. This study uses two data sources, namely primary and secondary data source. The primary data source of the study is the novel itself, Eleanor Porter’s Pollyanna novel. The secondary data sources are Biography of the author namely Eleanor Porter, websites in the internet about Pollyanna, and other resources which support to analyze. The outcome of this study shows the following conclusion. Firstly, based on the portrayal analysis of Pollyanna, the researcher concludes that Pollyanna as the major character in this novel has flat character. Pollyanna’s character has one side of personality, namely positive. From the beginning of the story until the end of the story, Pollyanna’s personal identity, physical qualities, moral qualities, mental qualities, and social qualities are positive. Secondly, based on humanistic psychological analysis of Carl Rogers, Eleanor H. Porter’s Pollyanna novel shows that the major character, Pollyanna, builds herself concept by building positive self concept. (1) based on the social historical background of the New Order, it shows that differences between the history and literary books. Okky shows the reality of life under authoritarian rule and biography of the author herself, greatly affect the figures and the background of life. (3) based on the point of view.     The major problem of this study is how despair and spirit of life is reflected in Ernest Hemingway The Old Man and the Sea novel (1952). The objective of this study is to analyze the novel based on the structural elements and based on psychoanalytic criticism. The research uses qualitative research. The data of the research consists of primary data and secondary data. The primary data of the research is the The Old Man and the Sea novel and the secondary data of the research are other materials related of the study. Technique of data collecting is the library research the steps are: reading some books and articles, accessing internet, taking note important parts in both the primary data and secondary data, and arranging the data into several categories. In analyzing the data, the researcher employs descriptive qualitative method. The result of the study shows the following conclusion. Based on the psychoanalytic criticism analysis, it shows that The Old Man and the Sea novel illustrates a psychological phenomenon in which an individual has experienced the nature between despair and spirit of life desire.     The major problem of this research is racism reflected in Maya Angelou’s poems. The aims of this research is to find out how racism reflected in Maya Angelou’s poems, to explain types of racism in Maya Angelou’s poems, and to find out why racism become the important issue in Maya Angelou’s poems. This research focuses in Maya Angelou’s poem especially about racism. The type of the research is qualitative research. The method of data collection is document analysis, and the technique of data collection is note taking, while the technique of data analysis is descriptive analysis in which the researcher interprets the text and the content relating to the psychological of the major character. This research uses two data sources, namely primary and secondary data source. The primary data source of the study is Maya Angelou’s poem itself, from the collection of Maya Angelou published in 1994. The secondary data sources are Biography of the author Maya Angelou, websites in the internet about Maya Angelou, and other resources which support to analyze. Based on structural analysis and the psychological approach, the researcher concludes that Maya Angelou’s poems reflected racism based on the poem text and the expression in the poem. The expressions here are dictions which divide into four such as dialect and accent, special expression, special term and borrowing. Imagery and symbol also two expressions supported Maya Angelou’s poem to reflect racism in visual and auditory imagery, also symbolize the particular words in the title of the poem. Maya Angelou’s poems also indicate types of racism such as slavery, discrimination, segregation, Hegemony, prejudice and stereotypes and class struggle. The last conclusion is Maya Angelou choose racism as the important issue in her poems because she is an African-American poet and activist
