Two-axis-twisting spin squeezing by multi-pass quantum erasure

Many-body entangled states are key elements in quantum information science and quantum metrology. One important problem in establishing a high degree of many-body entanglement using optical techniques is the leakage of the system information via the light that creates such entanglement. We propose an all-optical interference-based approach to erase this information. Unwanted atom-light entanglement can be removed by destructive interference of three or more successive atom-light interactions, with only the desired effective atom-atom interaction left. This quantum erasure protocol allows implementation of Heisenberg-limited spin squeezing using coherent light and a cold or warm atomic ensemble. Calculations show that significant improvement in the squeezing exceeding 10 dB is obtained compared to previous methods, and substantial spin squeezing is attainable even under moderate experimental conditions. Our method enables the efficient creation of many-body entangled states with simple setups, and thus is promising for advancing technologies in quantum metrology and quantum information processing.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. Deletion of diacylglycerol-responsive TRPC genes attenuates diabetic nephropathy by inhibiting activation of the TGFβ1 signaling pathway

TRPC6 plays a critical role in proteinuric kidney diseases, and TRPC3 is involved in tubulointerstitialdamage and renal fibrosis in obstructed kidneys. Podocyte loss is a characteristic event in diabetic nephropathy(DN). The aim of this study was to examine whether deletion of the closely related diacylglycerol (DAG)-responsiveTRPCs in mice (TRPC3/6/7-/-) affects diabetes-induced renal dysfunction and podocyte loss. We compared urinevolume, kidney hypertrophy, glomerular enlargement, albuminuria and podocyte loss between wild type (WT) andTRPC3/6/7-/- diabetic mice. Finally, we examined whether the TGFβ1 signaling pathway is changed in diabetic WTand TRPC3/6/7-/- mice. TRPC6 protein in the renal cortex was increased in WT diabetic mice. High glucose (HG)treatment increased TRPC6 expression in human podocytes. TRPC3 protein, however, was not altered in eitherdiabetic mice or HG-treated human podocytes. Although diabetic WT and TRPC3/6/7-/- mice had similar levels ofhyperglycemia, the TRPC3/6/7-/- diabetic mice showed less polyuria, kidney hypertrophy, glomerular enlargement, albuminuria, and had lost less podocytes compared with WT diabetic mice. In addition, we observed decreasedexpression of anti-apoptotic Bcl2 and increased expression of pro-apoptotic cleaved caspase 3 in WT diabetic mice, but such changes were not significant in TRPC3/6/7-/- diabetic mice. Western blot and immunohistochemistry revealedthat TGFβ1, p-Smad2/3, and fibronectin were upregulated in WT diabetic mice; however, expression of thesesignaling molecules was not changed in TRPC3/6/7-/- diabetic mice. In conclusion, deletion of DAG-responsiveTRPCs attenuates diabetic renal injury via inhibiting the upregulation of TGFβ1 signaling in diabetic kidneys.Fil: Liu, Benju. Identification of Free and Bound Exciton States and Their Phase-Dependent Trapping Behavior in Lead Halide Perovskites

In this work we probe the sub-gap energy states within polycrystalline and single crystal lead halide perovskites to better understand their intrinsic photophysics behaviors. Through combined temperature and intensity-dependent optical measurements, we reveal the existence of both free and bound exciton contributions within the sub-gap energy state manifold. The trapping and recombination dynamics of these excitons is shown to be strongly dependent on the structural phase of the perovskite. The orthorhombic phase exhibits ultrafast exciton trapping and distinct trap emission, while the tetragonal phase gives low monomolecular recombination velocity and capture cross-sections (~10-18 cm2). Within the multiphonon transition scenario, this suppression in charge trapping is caused by the increase in the charge capture activation energy due to the reduction in electron-lattice interactions, which can be the origin for the unexpected long carrier lifetime in these material systems.Comment: 5 figure

Coherence assisted resonance with sub-lifetime-limited linewidth

We demonstrate a novel approach to obtain resonance linewidth below that limited by coherence lifetime. Cross correlation between induced intensity modulation of two lasers coupling the target resonance exhibits a narrow spectrum. 1/30 of the lifetime-limited width was achieved in a proof-of-principle experiment where two ground states are the target resonance levels. Attainable linewidth is only limited by laser shot noise in principle. Experimental results agree with an intuitive analytical model and numerical calculations qualitatively. This technique can be easily implemented and should be applicable to many atomic, molecular and solid state spin systems for spectroscopy, metrology and resonance based sensing and imaging.Comment: 5 pages 5 figure
