The influence of cardiopulmonary bypass on pediatric pharmacokinetics
Children undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass receive many drugs. There is not much information regarding the influence of cardiopulmonary bypass on the pharmacokinetics of these drugs. In this thesis we describe the research we have performed regarding this subject at the Erasmus MC
Korean Immigrants and their Aesthetic Perspectives on Appearance
Beginning in the late 1960s, mass immigration has increased the diversity of ethnic groups in American society (Alba & Nee, 2003). As the geography of U.S. immigrant population has shifted from Europe to Asia, Africa, and Latin America, a more favorable environment has been provided for nonwhite immigrants than in the past (Alba & Nee, 2003). Current immigrants think that cultural differences in society are valuable and express interest in maintaining their own cultural origins and cultural objects. Different values and views co-exist in contemporary American society
The level of air pollution in the impact zone of coal-fired power plant (Karaganda City) using the data of geochemical snow survey (Republic of Kazakhstan)
Coal-fired power plants emissions impact the air quality and human health. Of great significance is assessment of solid airborne particles emissions from those plants and distance of their transportation. The article presents the results of air pollution assessment in the zone of coal-fired power plant (Karaganda City) using snow survey. Based on the mass of solid airborne particles deposited in snow, time of their deposition on snow at the distance from 0.5 to 4.5 km a value of dust load has been determined. It is stated that very high level of pollution is observed at the distance from 0.5 to 1 km. there is a trend in decrease of dust burden value with the distance from the stacks of coal-fired power plant that may be conditioned by the particle size and washing out smaller ash particles by ice pellets forming at freezing water vapour in stacks of the coal-fired power plant. Study in composition of solid airborne particles deposited in snow has shown that they mainly contain particulates of underburnt coal, Al-Si- rich spheres, Fe-rich spheres, and coal dust. The content of the particles in samples decreases with the distance from the stacks of the coal-fired power plant
Korean immigrants and their aesthetic perspectives on appearance
University of Minnesota Ph.D. dissertation. December 2013. Major: Design. Advisor: Marilyn R. DeLong. 1 computer file (PDF); xi, 163 pages, appendices A-B.In the United States, as the population of immigrants is constantly increasing, the adaptation of immigrants to the host society emerges as an important issue. Cultural differences between the culture of origin of immigrants and the host culture and dynamics of these two cultures shape their migratory process in the United States. The sense of belonging into the host culture as well as their culture of origin are simultaneous and often conflict with the formation of social identity. The needs for inclusion and differentiation in their dual or sometimes multiple cultural contexts make an impact on immigrants' attitudes and behaviors concerning appearance. Therefore, this study focuses on the influence of migratory experience and social identity of Korean immigrants both in their new culture and culture of origin towards their aesthetic perspectives on appearance. Conversations with thirty first generation Korean immigrant women show that immigrants negotiate and plan their strategic practices related to their appearance. This helps them balance the needs for inclusion and differentiation in dual cultural contexts. In this way they resolve the conflicts coming from different cultural values, ideals, thoughts, and standards of the host culture and heritage culture and relationships with peers in Korean society, other immigrants in Korean immigrant community, and mainstream Americans. These practices are shown in two appearance forms in choosing to wear the same ensemble for both contexts or two ensembles for each context
Interference Alignment in 2-user X Channel System with Orthogonal and quasi-orthogonal Space-time Block Codes
Flow cytometric fluorescence pulse width analysis of etoposide-induced nuclear enlargement in HCT116 cells
Fluorescence pulse width can provide size information on the fluorescence-emitting particle, such as the nuclei of propidium iodide-stained cells. To analyze nuclear size in the present study, rather than perform the simple doublet discrimination approach usually employed in flow cytometric DNA content analyses, we assessed the pulse width of the propidium iodide fluorescence signal. The anti-cancer drug etoposide is reportedly cytostatic, can induce a strong G2/M arrest, and results in nuclear enlargement. Based on these characteristics, we used etoposide-treated HCT116 cells as our experimental model system. The fluorescence pulse widths (FL2-W) of etoposide-treated (10 μM, 48 h) cells were distributed at higher positions than those of vehicle control, so the peak FL2-W value of etoposide-treated cells appeared at 400 while those of vehicle control cells appeared at 200 and 270. These results were consistent with our microscopic observations. This etoposide-induced increase in FL2-W was more apparent in G2/M phase than other cell cycle phases, suggesting that etoposide-induced nuclear enlargement preferentially occurred in G2/M phase cells rather than in G0/G1 or S phase cells
The Potential of Portable AR in Physics Education: A Study on Student Perceptions
Integrating portable augmented reality (AR) into physics education has the potential to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. This study investigates students\u27 perceptions of the appeal and effectiveness of the Traveling Virtual Lab (TVL), a solar-powered AR learning kit designed to improve physics education in the Philippines. A quantitative research design was employed, utilizing the "Student Acceptance of Virtual Laboratory questionnaire" adapted from Park (2009). The sample consisted of 58 students, with a balanced gender distribution and a majority at the tertiary-education level. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were performed to address the research questions. The results indicate that students perceive TVL as appealing and effective for learning physics concepts, with mean ratings of 3.9 for both variables. No significant differences were found in perceptions based on gender or grade. This study highlights the potential of portable AR to enhance physics education by providing immersive and interactive experiences that can visualize complex concepts and overcome resource constraints. However, challenges remain, including technological accessibility and the need for training teachers. These findings contribute to the growing body of literature on AR in education and have implications for the development and implementation of virtual laboratory technologies, particularly in resource-constrained settings. Future research should focus on addressing implementation challenges and exploring the long-term impact on student learning outcomes
