ANALYSIS OF POSSIBILITIES FOR THE USE OF VOLUME-DELAY FUNCTIONS IN THE PLANNING MODULE OF THE TRISTAR SYSTEM

Summary. Travel time is a measure commonly used for traffic flow modelling and traffic control. It also helps to evaluate the quality of traffic control systems in urban areas. Traffic control systems that use traffic models to predict changes and disruptions in vehicle flows have to use vehicle speed-prediction models. Travel time estimation studies the effects of traffic volumes on a street section at an average speed. The TRISTAR Integrated Transport Management System, currently being deployed across the Tri-City (Gdansk, Sopot, Gdynia), is almost completed and data obtained from the System can be useful for the development of prediction models. A procedure for travel speed model selection for the Tri-City street network is presented in this paper. Matching of chosen volume-delay functions to the data obtained from the TRISTAR has been tested. Analyses have shown insufficient matching of functions that does not justify the possibility of their use in traffic control due to variability in different conditions of traffic, weather and, in the case of an incident, which justifies the need for further research aimed at satisfying matching of functions depending on the above-mentioned factors

Przedstawiono ponadto metodę szacowania efektywności zmian w organizacji ruchu na podstawie badań terenowych i symulacyjnych, którą zastosowano podczas procesu planowania usprawnień.Polish cities introduce solutions to encourage alternative – to car travel – modes of transport, including public transport, which can contribute to reducing congestion in the street network. The example is the introduction of a dedicated reversible bus lane in one of the main arteries in Gdynia. This is the first solution in Poland, which was launched at the end of last year. The main aim of the article is to present an innovative solution and to indicate its advantages and disadvantages and problems that appeared at the implementation stage. Moreover, a method of estimating the effectiveness of changes in traffic organization on the basis of field research and simulation, which was used during the process of planning improvements, has been presented

Bicycle Traffic Model for Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning

Modelling tools and transport models are required to assess the impact of measures for the effective planning of cycling routes in cities. This paper presents the methodology for developing a four-stage macroscopic model of bicycle traffic for the city of Gdynia, and its use in planning new bicycle routes, considering a modal shift. The model presented in this paper allows for the evaluation of the influence of the characteristics of the cycling infrastructure, along with the development of the cycling network based on the choice of cycling as an alternative to other modes of transport, by taking into account the modal shift. The model takes into account the influence of the longitudinal gradient, link, and surface type of cycling routes on the distribution and demand for bicycle traffic. The results of our research allow us to assess the impact of planned cycling routes on the reduction in the volume of car traffic, which is crucial for reducing energy consumption and negative environmental impacts. Experiences from the application of the model in Gdynia suggest that the model provides a strong basis to support mobility planning and monitoring processes in cities worldwide. Cities should take into account the methods proposed in this paper when planning the development of their transport systems

Systematics of intelligent transport systems services

Recent years have seen a more intensified deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in Polish cities. Work is also underway on the implementation of ITS on the national roads within the National Traffic Management System (KSZR). The research project RID-4D (part of Road Innovations), is designed to fill the gap, which is the lack of systematics of ITS services in Poland. The paper presents a proposal of ITS services systematics, which was developed based on an analysis of key international standards. FRAME architecture and American standards were the basis for the preparation of a standard scheme of ITS services. The results of the work on the KSZR architecture as well as local and regional architectures of urban systems were also taken into account

Influence of Intelligent Transport Systems services on motorways road safety

The positive effects of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) services on road safety was confirmed by long-term studies conducted, inter alia, in the USA, Japan and Europe. Benefits resulting from the application of ITS services can be presented through performance indicators. The paper presents analysis results of the influence of existing ITS services on road safety on motorways in Poland and indicators describing that impact. For the purpose of the analysis data of accidents (years 2013-2015) are used to describe safety level for motorways with different number and scope of ITS services. Additionally, the authors analyzed - based on the diagnosis of the traffic status - the possibility of the impact of existing and planned ITS services on improving the road safety in the area of the National Road Traffic Management System (Krajowy System Zarządzania Ruchem, - KSZR). Current level of ITS services on Polish motorways within the architecture of KSZR System and state of its development will be presented as well

Methodology of research on the impact of ITS services on the safety and efficiency of road traffic using transport models

The current assessment of the impact of Intelligent Transport System (ITS) services on the level of traffic safety and efficiency is based mainly on expert assessments, statistical surveys or several traffic safety models requiring development. There is no structured, uniform assessment method that would give the opportunity to compare the impact of ITS services and their different configurations. The paper presents the methodology for researching the effectiveness of ITS services implementation using transport models and key indicators allowing such an assessment. An approach was used in which the impact of ITS services is analysed using macro, meso and microscopic models. Macro and mesoscopic models allow estimation of the impact of ITS services on the efficiency of transport network operation and constitute the basis of analyses at the microscopic level, which takes into account the behaviour of drivers through the use of car following and lane change models. As part of the analyses, road network test models (for motorways and expressways along with an alternative route) were developed. Test models include road class, network topology, and different traffic intensity. The models were calibrated using real data (data from the traffic measurement station, data measured in the field, traffic distribution data from the VIATOLL charging system) and data from the vehicle simulator
